I had surgery (base wedge osteotomy) and the lump shaved off the side of bone on the big toe of the same foot 6 weeks and 4 days ago. I had a fabulous surgeon that I personally knew and he has been wonderful, but so far I don't think my foot is doing so wonderful. I did quite well the first 3 weeks in a fiberglass cast, then he removed it and took out the sutures which was incredibly painful despite his gentle touch. A knew cast was put on which was a little shorter and lighter and the long pin sticking through my foot was left in. I just had the cast finally removed 4 days ago at my 6 week post op visit and the pin was also removed. The pin removal was not supposed to hurt but mine was stuck somewhat and wasn't easily sliding out (not fun!) He told me to start with my foot and toe exercises as soon as possible because I was very stiff (he did them on me in the office and I was in agony :'( ). I tried to put body weight on my heal only as instructed but that was painful and I couldn't take one step. I did do the exercises even though they hurt. I continued to try and at least put some pressure on my heal to get used to it and I noticed my foot on the top and bottom looked all bruised suddenly. I called my surgeon and he told me to stay completely off of it and to come in to see him first thing in the morning.....I don't know if this has happened to anyone else but I am now getting nervous.

Bruising is caused by blood to the area! I think you might have a clot in the area of your incision! Do as your doctor says and keep off of it! Did he mention about takin an asprin or anything like that? When a part of your body has been opened and messed with and then immobilized there is ALWAYS a risk of a clot! So just keep an eye on it OK? Raise your leg, and apply warm moist compress's to your foot! IF you have any trouble breathing or feel a tightness in your chest call 911 IMMEDIATELY OK? I don't want to frighten you too much, but after surgery a deep vein thrombosis is VERY likely! So please be careful OK? And let me k now how you make out! Good luck and health honey!
Thank-you for your concern. I saw the doctor this morning and my foot looked much better. He x-rayed it again to make sure there were no small fractures (which there weren't) and the coloration of my foot was no longer purple and the bruising he felt was a result from the pin removal (not enough for concern he stated.) I felt so much better after seeing him, it really eased my mind. He at that point made it very clear to me that I needed to discontinue babying it and it was 100% okay to begin walking. Due to some nerve sensitivity on the side of my foot he told me about 2 cases in his career that developed this terrible nerve pain condition that required special pain therapy. After a full explanation of it I understood the importance of not being afraid to step down on the foot and get moving so I didn't develop this condition. I went home and started slowly walking and I was so pleased even though it is uncomfortable, but not to bad. Thanks to an understanding and cautious surgeon I am on my way to recovery now.
