well you sign up for it just like any other class. i'v played percussion since 5th grade. when i went to IVCC (a local community college) I didnt play because they don't have a football team thus having no marching band. once i got up to NIU I got back into it. for the drumline they hold auditions so you have to try out to be on it.
i mainly like marching band/pep band but i also have played in orchestra and concert band as well (mainly in high school)
