The poster that was considering using Adderall for weight loss may be disappointed with the outcome. I too am 70 lbs overweight and have ADD and major depressive disorder in remission. I've been on Adderall for over 10 years and it has never caused me to loose weight. I REALLY WISH IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED ME TO LOOSE THIS WEIGHT.

Actually, I would say that in the last decade, I've increased in weight by at least 10 pounds. Perhaps you have to take a really high dose for it to be effective in weight loss? I don't know, but I only use it as prescribed by my doctor at 30 mg. a day, and my appetite is the same.

Perhaps you could go to a weight loss clinic? This is what I'm going to do.

Hey. I was on Phetermine for 3 months a lost 40 pounds. It was amazing. But You got to be careful when getting off of it. You can gain it all back twice as fast as losing it. I did....so I returned to my doc and told her that i wanted it again and that i did not take her seriously about gaining the wrght back. So I am on it again. It is a great drug.....look it up and ask your doc about it. I had no side effects what so ever. But it to, can be hihly habit forming after six months. I was surprised my doc gave it to me gain, as she told me she would do no more than 2 months. But I dont have a habit forming personality and had no prob getting off of it. So.....she did. I would reccomend Phentermine. Defintley.

HELP! I am a parent of a 17 year old who has been taking adderall for about 2 months. I have had trouble with him for many years; compulsive, steeling, made bomb and blew up the 2 pop machines, stole $250 from my AMT and denied it, counterfitting money and trying to pass it off to friends at school, 104 mile speeding ticket, and now the doc finally decided to try this med.
He is acting hyper, staying up all night to do homework because he doesn't use his time wisely, and started smoking cigerates but he really likes the med. for helping him concentrate in school.
We have mental disorders in our family, I have self diagnosed myself with dyslexia and probably something else?maybe mild bi polar or depression, but my brother committed suicide a year ago and had several problems...related to drugs, (pot, meth,?) we think he was bi pollar which my son might have mildly. My brother probably had OCD and who knows with all the problems he had. My dad was an acoholic for many years, so we do have addiction disorders.
My concern is that my son is very resentful about my taking away the drug and I think he is already addicted...we have that problem in the family also. He is very compulsive and destructive at times. I remember he was always trying to take those energy pills when he was wrestling and always lazy or unmotivated so he likes the upper feeling. Yuck! It's hard knowing what to do but he has been way hyper and I don't think this med. is the right fix. Any ideas? Thanks! ?

Why did you take him off this drug then? At least he's no longer getting into trouble like you had previously mentioned. I wouldn't like it if my son smoked, of course, but kids are going to smoke regardless what you do. Sorry, but adderall does not make one smoke. He chose that path. If my son stayed up all night to do homework, I'd be pretty darn proud. He could be doing worse things you know.

Are you sure it's because he's addicted or is that what you think? You ought to actually talk to him. He may be resentful because the drug may have worked for him and you take it away. How disappointing. Additionally, you can't just take someone off of adderall. That is a very bad thing to do! It has to weaned so you can switch to a different drug. I'm not trying to start drama, but you are doing your son a terrible injustice for taking away something that made him "stay up all night doing homework". At least he's not putting bombs in soda machines now is he?

I take it for both ADD and weight loss. I also have a compulsive eating disorder, and I can say with all sincerity that it is the first thing I have ever used in my life that has helped me reduce my weight and keep it off. Over the years I ballooned to over 425lbs and have lost about 65lbs since I've been on Adderall.

According to my doctor who uses Adderall for some of his other obese and morbidly obese patients, it's usually a last resort before they have to consider bariatric surgery. It doesn't have the same effect for everyone and if you in any way have an addictive personality you shouldn't bother with it.

Anyway, if someone is having major issues with weight loss they may want to consider consulting a doctor that specialises in bariatrics. After 25 years of hell on Earth trying to get help from "regular" doctors I finally found a doctor that sincerely tries to help the overweight/obese instead of just passing judgment and getting us to waste time on yet another carbon copy diet plan.

I am a nutritionist and recommend AFA (blue-green algae from Klammath, no side effects :-) and L-Tyrosine to suppress your appetite in combination with L-Phelylalanine. You can also add L-Tryptrophan and 5-HTP to fight anxiety or depression associated with the decrease of calorie intake or blood sugar crashes.

Stop taking these slowly killing prescription drugs! They cost too much and only benefit the Pharmaceutical company :-(

I have several problems that caused me to take drugs that caused drowsiness so my neurologist gave me adderal. I am not ADHD or have Narcolepsy but do have a weight problem.

Since I quit smoking in 1992, had a hysterectomy in 1999 and began a seditary job at the computer since 2000, I have gained 100 pounds. I now have diabetes, fibromyalgia, edema, higher blood pressure and high colestrol. In order to alleviate these problems, I am going back on Adderal. I would rather have the side effects from Adderal than be in a wheel chair from a stroke or heart attack-or even worse, amputations, kidney failure and blindness from the diabetes. The doctor said if I lose 100 pounds, most of my health problems will solve themselves.

I found that Adderal gave me an abundance of energy (because it is an amphetamine and Meth-amphetamine works better but is illegal) and took away my appitite as long as I took it. I was able to function like never before-had the incentive to clean house, work in the gardens, etc.

Problem 1: When I wanted to go to sleep, I couldn't
Problem 2: When the Adderal wore off I was hungry as a bear and wanted to eat everything in site no matter how ridiculous it was.
Problem 3: When coming down off the drug you get a bit disorientated and paranoid about things you wouldn't normally, if you weren't on the drug. You may worry about your circumstances, etc. Remember if this happens, it is the drug and not your situation.

Conclusion: I was able to take off enough weight to lose a dress size in order to go to my 40th High School Reunion. I was still fat but not AS fat.

In my opinion, if you do take Adderal, don't go overboard. It is twice as strong as Ritalin that is used for the same purpose. Try not to take a lot thinking it will work better. 20 mgs in the morning works all day long to suppress your appitite. You can still eat but smaller portions.

Don't start taking prescription sleep meds to come down off the drug. Try to do enough activity during the day to make you tired enough to sleep.

:-)

Eight years ago my fiancee at the time was on adderal for his ADD. I was having some emotional troubles and experiencing anxiety attacks. I was unable to concentrate and felt confused. He did some research on adderal before offering me it. I could only take a quarter of a pill. But it really helped. I was able to concentrate and complete tasks. And yes it took away my appetite. I lost 12 lbs in a few weeks. Which was a bonus to me. As long as you control the dosage I think there should not be a problem. But that does not mean I think everyone should go out and get some. It would be best to consider your situation and health.

The articles here have been interesting to read. I'm likely a little older than most of you folks, (47M) and I just started Adderal. Without going into all of the reasons why my physician made this decision, I'm somewhat appalled by one item in these posts and another item that seems to be missing.

First, it seems many people here have some pretty serious weight issues. I'm very fit and most people think I'm in my mid 30's. I've absolutely noticed my lack of desire to eat the past three days. This is not a good thing, because in addition to losing what little unhealthy body fat I have, I'll also lose muscle bulk. I'm NOT a body builder, but as I said I am in good shape and exercise daily.

Second, I'm VERY concerned about those of you who mention Adderal as a method of weight loss with absolutely NO mention of physical exercise. You must set at least some time aside each day to exercise, even if it's just a one hour walk. Most people at a brisk pace can manage a four MPH pace.

Drugs as a method of weight loss is never a good idea. I'm speaking to the ladies out there. I've noticed changes within myself since beginning the Adderal, and I'm not yet to what my physician describes as a medicinal level. I feel much more calm in my head, yet I seem to be less productive overall. I believe this is supposed to change over time. It BETTER!

Before coming to look around this site, I saw a site, which will remain unnamed, where college aged kids, mostly girls, were posting essentially want adds requesting Adderal from other kids who may have leftover medication. I ask you all to look around for things like this online during your daily internet travels and try to discourage this activity. I really don't believe these kids have any clue about what their getting into without a physicians support. This is a VERY serious medication which could prove deadly for people who have "normal" brain chemistry, whatever that may be.

Good luck to you ALL! Keep the exercise suggestion in mind......

I read your post and decided to add a few comments. For the most part I believe you're missing the point when people make statements like "exercise and eat healthy", which has nothing to do with a woman's "desire" to lose weight.

My take is people are claiming that taking Adderal shouldn't be used as a means to an end result where the ingestion of this drugs sole purpose is weight loss. Do you follow the difference from your interpretation? It's not you personally their attacking.

Adderal wasn't and isn't designed to be used in this manor. It is of course a very serious medication which is abused by people on the street to get high. Naturally the true purpose of Adderal is to alter an individuals brain chemistry when it's determined by a legitimate physician someone falls into this category.

Adderal brings this brain chemistry in line with typical people. For people who suffer from this condition taking this drug has the opposite affect on people with mixed up brain chemistry than it does on people with what's considered normal chemistry. So while I feel more calm and relaxed, the normal person would receive the normal stimulant affect of the drug and feel high. This is why it's not a weight loss pill.

I completely agree with you on the self esteem issues associated with being overweight! And the story with your son is absolutely heartbreaking. Unfortunately most kids at that age don't yet understand tact and good manners.

Your post was very well written and your point taken. You obviously have some smarts upstairs and have been doing most everything right. The key is to get you over whatever barrier exists between your current 60 pounds overweight down to zero.

Being only 60 pounds overweight normally indicates to me that the additional weight isn't all about genetics. Referring to those terribly unfortunate people who are so grossly overweight to the point that the problem affects everything they do in life. I really feel for people afflicted in this way, but it's important to note this is a very small percentage of overweight people.

If I could somehow get an e-mail to you I would make a suggestion which I know would help you. I won't post this information here because I'm contemplating writing a book based on my own experience with the methods I've developed. It's not rocket science, but if you follow my advice you will lose weight. And it doesn't involve drugs.

okay first offff, NOOOO. ugh uhh girl friend.
Do not take adderal to help you loose weight.
that's stupid stupid stupid. TRust me.

hear me out. LOUD AND CLEAR.

the reason why it makes you loose weight is because its like cocaine.
I am A.d.d. & cocain will probabally have no effect for me but make me focus.

You might as well be doing drugs.
but also you need to look up the side effects.
you are supposed to eat thirty minutes before you take adderal.
bc if you dont then your stomache will hurt so bad you dont know if your starving, or so full you cannot eat.

also i'm very restless.
I have only had on hour of sleep i the past two days.
& i feel like partying still.

lol, but just trying to let you know.

Actually, Adderall was originally designed as a weight loss drug marketed as Obetrol.

Adderal can be be an effective weight loss drug but the tendency for abuse is very high. Drs. tend to shy away form prescribing it for weight loss, because it is methamphetemine or as some people call it speed. It is primary dosed out for people who have nacrolepsy and for children with AHDD.

Hi,
I have a very close friend who has suffered from depression. Recently she was diagnosed with moderate GAD (generalised anxiety disorder). She has previously taken zoloft but found it made her overhyperactive and generally not a very good drug, as i believe many people who have been on it would agree.

In relation to your post, she also suffered from binge eating and had put on quite a bit of weight over the years due to that. Anyway she was prescribed effexor (an SNRI) for her GAD as it is not likely to make you put on weight. And in fact she has lost a lot of weight since she's started taking it. She simply doesn't binge anymore, and doesn't feel the need to. So seeing as you're also suffering from depression, as you mentioned, i think the best idea would be to talk to your doctor about taking an antidepressant that may also help with weight loss, rather than a mixture of drugs.

First, most pills that people take in attempt to assist with weight loss are drugs.

Second, you seem to have a few misconceptions about ADD/ADHD and drug use for such conditions. ADD/ADHD are not "mental problems", it's a behavioral "disorder"/learning disability. People with ADD/ADHD are NOT mentally ill.

Third, the side effects that you've listed are possible side effects that not everyone experiences. Adderall is not a drug that needs to be taken every day, people who are prescribed Adderall often only take it when they are in school or going to work and take "breaks" from it on weekends or vacations. For people who actually have ADHD, this medication works wonderfully, and has few side effects. Because it is such a highly controlled substance, patients are required by law to see their doctor once every three months to check heartrate, blood pressure and weight.
