1. How old were you when the habit started? I think around age 16
2. Did you move around a lot as a kid/teenager? No
3. Do you experience anxiety/depression? Ups and downs as an average person I suppose
4. Do you feel that picking the dandruff relieves stress? No, I feel it keeps my hand busy
5. Do you do it even when your head isn't itching? Yes. I also pick any "seeds" that I can find on my back. I think they are called Sebum plugs.
6. Do you feel sad when you can't find any dandruff? That is my sign to stop. Scalp will hurt at that point so I will take a break at least until the next day. This habit seems to happen on it's own, like subconsciously. Luckily I don't do it when I'm out of the house (even though I think it started while sitting in class in high school). For me it happens when I'm sitting on the computer or watching tv. It's kind of like comforting entertainment and I actually feel like I've accomplished something when I remove a Sebum plug, dry skin or dandruff. PS I don't have any visible dandruff.

Wonder what the biggest piece of dandruff ever recorded is?
I have a bit of dandruff but it is very fine, I was on the bus with my mum ( I am 14) There was an elderly man sat in front of me with epic dandruff,i couldn't stop myself from putting my fingers through his hair quickly, his dandruff fell over his shoulders ( he was wearing a black jacket ) I got a right telling off from him, I just told him I was admiring his dandruff flakes ( I wont say what he said to that but it ended up with me and my mum being thrown off the bus.)

People with asperges and autism, even high functioning do this. Sounds like ocd. Tell dr. They can put you on a low dude of Prozac till you stop picking. When something causes the picking to return just start the prozac again. I know this because I habitually bite my tongue. It comes and goes. Prozac off and on has worked.

Im addicted to scalp picking to. Been doing this since I was a teenager. Mine is from anxiety. I talked to my family Dr about it & he said it was like self harm. I didn't even think of it that way. Now I've been ashamed to even talk to my dr again. I pick till I bleed. Then put peroxide on the spots. Recently I had to be separated from my boyfriend & stress got to me so bad that my head is almost covered in sores. I don't have lice. Because my kids had that when they were in elementary school. I know what they look like. I've been trying tea tree oil doesn't seem to be working. U say try some baby oil??? Also u say try Green tea shampoo at Great Clips?? I tried putting baking soda on it once & it worked. Any advice would be helpful. I've been scared to open up about this. So I'm glad people are talking about it!!!

You put peroxide on the spots!!!??? Surely that hurts like hell !! I have found that pouring milk on my scalp sores helps cool the area, the thing I hate about scalp scabs is going for my hair cut, I am a male and have it cut short, many a time my barber has caught a scab with his comb and ripped it off, the pain is awful, only good thing the action of the scab being sliced off is very quick so the pain is only for a limited time but I can still feel the sting and tingle afterwards, when my barber applying hair gel the removed scab stings like mad, don't be bothered about talking to your doctor again, he will have seen it all and much worse.

I'm so glad other people have this problem. I'm a 13 y/o girl and I can't stop scratching my head! It's so satisfying to me to see the little peices of dandruff fall, especially onto black surfaces. Its a nervous tick that I can't seem to get rid of. I used to get bullied in school for it, people saying I have lice. Is there a term for what we all do?

While i read all these post, i am scratching my scalp. Lol i am 27 and have had this addiction forever. I hate having a dry af scalp. Nothing works for me. Only when i shaved my head bald and used aquaphor. Hah pretty extreme but true. But i am not one to rock a bald head so im always combing through my hair looking for the biggest flakes. Had flakes as big as a penny. Disgusting... I know right. I usually wash my hair about everyday. I know thats too often but if i skip a day, like i did last night, my scalp is back to being dryer than ever.. Im starting to think i have a dry af skin disease. Idk... Maybe some holy water on my dome might help
