I am a student studying medicine, and although I have not done experiments to test this theory, I have an idea as to why we are addicted to scratching. The evolutionary purpose of scratching is to get rid of things that are potentially dangerous to our body. Therefore if there was say a bug on your arm, you would scratch that area so that the bug would get off of your body, and would not bite you. Therefore, when we scratch our head, and the little white flakes come off, it is very satisfying because we are essentially ridding our body of something that does not belong. I believe that the reason we have this strong urge to continue itching is because of its strong relation to a function meant to protect us from harm

True, although I like to see the flakes on dark surfaces, I also have a couple of scabs on my scalp from picking and although it hurts when I go to the hairdressers I love it if the hairdressers comb rips off a scab in one sweep.

1) I've had it for as long as I can remember
2) never moved
3) currently treated low-level for both
4) yes, but sometimes I just do it absentmindedly. Usually feels like a release
5) yes, almost never actually caused by my head itching
6) I will pick at pretty much any skin that looks remotely dry and peel it up, but yes I feel disappointed when there are no "good" patches.
7) white
8) Minnesota
9) female
Note: I have a condition that increases the amount of dead skin buildup on my eyelashes (like "crusties" after sleeping) and I love to pick the dead skin out. It often comes out in scaley sections like a scab. If it bleeds, I will also pick off the scab.

Put honey on your scalp for 30 minutes one time a week. I think it is skin mites and the honey smoothers them. They can cause rosacea too. Honey works for that too. Use it on eyelids too. In between the honey treatment, use tea tree oil on the eyelid. Use tea tree diluted with water and shaken well on scalp too in between the honey treatments.

I have the exact same issue and I really want to to stop but it does not happen. Try using a shower cap to cover your head at night. Remind yourself all the time I need to stop. Then if you have any get some oil like frankincense and but it on your scalp and then pretty soon you should be better!

Hi, I have suffered from dandruff and dry itchy flaky scalp forever, when I was young I would use my pen lid a scratch my scalp they I would see all this excess skin in the lid, I guess I got more and more obsessed doing it. Over the years it has gotten worse, my scalp really flares up. I try to avoid scratching especially at work. It's embarrassing when my hair is greasy it really flares up so much I see the flakes in my fingers nails. my scalp throbs from all the scratching and I get scabs which I then pick. I have tried all types of shampoos oils etc. nothing seems to work I have now purchased the Tgel I hope this helps. I'm getting really embarrassed and I'm sure people notice my always scratching my scalp. I need help.

I actually love the pain I feel when my hairdresser slices through a scab with his comb, I had my hair shaved off for charity a couple of years ago, my scalp was a bloody mess afterward as the razors sliced through my scabs and bumps on my head.

I am a bit different to you in that I am horrified when my hairdresser slices through a scab, I also hate the pain. I really can`t see why you would get pleasure from having a scab ripped off your scalp, the thought of it makes me feel sick.

I too love it when I get a scab with fine holes.. feels like treasure hunting.. I even press them and collect in a notebook

Never use olive oil for hair treatment. Try mustard, almond etc. Olive makes hair dry, brittle and prone to hair fall
