29 year old female. I've done this since 9 or 10 years old. It's possibly stress related, but, it doesn't really seem like a huge deal.

When I was a kid/teen I'd scratch so much i'd get tons of horrible scabs. Just like so many have described, I would pick the scabs and pull them down the hair shaft to keep them in tact. The only person who caught on was my Aunt because she cut my hair. She simply made sure I didn't have lice and left me alone about it.

I do the same thing so many have described here. I scratch, i watch it pool on something dark - sometimes something light. It depends on the lighting/time of day. I start at the hairline, move all around, parting my hair in different ways in order to easily cover more ground.

I no longer get horrible scabs because I basically "cut myself off." For me, the bulk of the "satisfaction" comes after recently washing my hair, that's when I'm flakiest. And I don't have like serious dandruff, it doesn't even start flaking until I start scratching. Anyway, the more I scratch, the more oily my head gets.

So I pretty much do this when I'm about to wash my hair, I don't scratch to the point of scabbing, and I wash my hair after I engage in this silly little ritual. No one knows, my hair typically looks pretty good ^_^

Clearly this isn't all that abnormal. For every one who has posted there are bound to be countless who haven't even seen this. It's probably some kind of evolutionary event that perhaps was formerly necessary - you know, like how apes and birds pull parasites off each other.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention (same 29 female above here.) Just to add my own twist of neurotic to this: when it's all pooled on a surface - I eat it. Seriously.

i usually do it over a blank spot on my desk with a comb until my head is completely exfoliated, and there is a nasty pile of white dandruff on my desk which i throw away. after i rinse my hair in cold water and use reg shampoo with some T-Gel(neutrogena) which helps
i use TGEL like 1-2 times a week and my dandruff is always minimum, but is still there, reason i dont use t-gel too much is because it smells like tar(which is an ingredient) but damn it works, if i use alot and let it sit there for 5 min all dandruff is gone no matter what

Too much detail here about how to PREVENT dandruff. I love dandruff and I need tips on how to CAUSE more and more dandruff so I can scratch it from my scalp!

The extreme urge to scratch and finding relief in scratching is categorized under the Obsessive Complusive category. You feel that you must scratch to feel at peace. Many times this habit becomes addicting and can only be conquered by forming a positive habit in place of scratching your head. Many couselors suggest that you wear a rubber band on your wrist and pull it or snap it everytime you have the urge to scratch. It's better to get a thicker rubber band, so you can't have the excuse that it broke.

Wow, I am a 20 yr old male and have had seemingly this exact problem since I was maybe around 9... I've looked up so many things on the web to see what it was but none of them seemed to really match this problem. It just feels sooooo good to scratch my head when it gets itchy, and it also gets to the point where I get these scabs all over my head (No matter how much I tell myself how gross it is, I can't stop doing it). Every so often I tell myself that if I stop scratching right now, everything will heal up within a week but I ALWAYS seem to have to go back and pick at everything. I can totally relate to everything people have said in this thread about the satisfaction of getting a flake and just clearing your head of flakes.

This only seems to happen for me during the summer though... and it happens every summer without fail. Whenever the weather gets hot, my head gets really, really, really itchy and I start scratching it. Then eventually after I get flakes and sores on my head I start scratching it and picking at dandruff even if it doesn't itch, and search my whole head for loose flakes of dandruff. Then when the fall and winter come, my head stops itching and I stop picking at it and it all goes away.

I've tried Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue, and Scalpacin with limited success. Anything with menthol makes it feel better, and also the burning pain from applying this stuff makes me not want to touch my head... it's like they convert the itching sensation to pain and it makes me stop scratching... temporarily. It goes back to the way it was before usually within a day or two and it's horrible.

But it's so amazing that so many other people have this compulsive thing too... for the past 11 years I thought I was the only weirdo person who did this.

I'm a fifteen year old female, and I've been doing this for quite awhile now. I eat the flakes, too. I do this everywhere, my scalp, my forehead, my nose, my chest, my back but especially my head. I don't know where this obsession came from! :-( I also like to pluck eyebrow hairs, nose hairs, and eyelashes and eat them. What's wrong with me? ;(

I totally know what you guys are talking about!! Scratching my head totally feels so much better than sex! I scratch it 24/7 and it arouses me to see the white flakes fall all over. I'm scratching my head at this very moment while I'm writing this message!

God i love to run my comb through my hair and have it stop. When it does I run to the bathroom mirror and take the comb and seperate my hair from my scalp in that area so i can see what the crust looks like. When i've had enough looking I begin using my comb to slowly pick the flakes off the crusty spot. I have a jar that I save the flakes in. It's about 1/2 full now I only save the big flakes not the dandruff or tiny flake parts that break off. Sometimes I have an urge to dump the entire bottle onto my desk and look at the giant pile of flakes that ive saved when im done looking I put them back in the bottle and back in the drawer it goes. The flakest spots for me are behind my ears and on top of my scalp but toward the back area. If I can resist touching my head for 2-3 days I find that by then I have a massive buildup of crust to examine and pick off. I prefer waiting a few days and going to town rather then doing a little hear and there everyday but sometimes I just have to do it. Like everyone says it's a compulsion. I gotta say i've never eaten them though to me that seems totally disgusting, not like saving them in a jar for years is much better but we have to draw the line somewhere I guess. I want to stop this habit yet I don't bother with trying to get rid of the crusty flakey areas id be lost withought them. Good luck everyone and happy picking :-)

OMG!!! This is GREAT!! I don't get dandruff, but my 22 year old daughter does - and I always ask her to let me scratch the flakes from her scalp! Sometimes she isn't in the mood - but I beg her till she gives in, lol. I use a fine-tooth rat tail stylists comb, so that I can lift the huge flakes from her scalp without really breaking them. I put a towel around her shoulders to catch them as they fall. I don't know what this is.. but it's almost like an addiction for me! We are Black, and yes, I did try greasing her scalp, to no avail. She's tried Nizoral and T-Gel from Neutrogena. Head and shoulders... everything. We just read that if you wash your hair with just plain Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo... it will clear it up quickly.
I'm gonna buy her some baby shampoo tomorrow.. but secretly I just want to keep scratching those huge flakes! I'm glad to see that there are others (LOTS of others) with this same "addiction", LOL!! :-D :-D
