Im 21 year old girl and I do the same thing..... I can't stop scratching, it helps time go by faster for some odd reason. It got so bad at one point I needed specail medication on my head because I was causing irritation and little bumps on my head that bleed when I scrachted too hard. It's extremely annoying. I wish I could stop. I thought I was the only crazy person who scratches her head for no good reason but to watch the flakey white stuff collect under my finger nails. I'm also starting to develop another problem where I scratch off my pimples on my body, esp on my upper back.

I finally googled this topic and am amazed that I'm not the only one who does this. I have been obsessed a lack for a better work with my dandruff since I was in my early 20's.  I'm 38 now.  And I like to scratch my head and see the white flakes on my clothes.  When the flakes go under my nails I like to rub them over my eye brows and let the flakes fall on my face.  Sounds sooo strange and weird.  I did use to collect my bigger flakes in a box and I to this day have no idea why I do this.  I know its OCD.  And its so strange.  I am glad that I'm not the only one.

What's the science behind this? I've had this problem too for all the time I've had dandruff (a year and a half-maybe even two-my blond hair shields it which makes me not care as much)

I'm going to finally see the doctor and get prescription shampoos to get rid. But this addiction is real, I just don't have it as extream as many of you and actually want it to stop.

I didn't think this was a thing that affected other people! I'm a teenager and I've been doing it for years now and I'm not sure why it's so satisfying. I'll never forget watching The Breakfast Club, when the girl scratches her head over her paper to make a "snow" effect, and my friend said "Ew!" and I had to pretend that I don't do that all the time. It's just such a comfort knowing that I'm not a complete freak and that there are others!

Im 36 and ive done the dandruff shower thing for years (since aged 15???)   I find it so comforting, i like to shake my hair over the arms of my sofa then run my finger through it, i think i follow my dads side of family for having dandruff, my dad who is 62 and also has good head of hair has plenty in his hair, i often get a pen or pencil and search through his hair for the largest piece when he comes to visit, this really annoys my mum and tells me to grow up, my dad just laughs it off and says i should have been a nit nurse!!

Hi Everyone,

I have had this same problem almost all my life... It is only yesterday that I figured that I have Psoriasis. There are treatments for it. I have been really self-conscious about it knowing that my hair would smell really badly two days after washing it or that people could see plenty of white stuff in my hair if I don't wash it all the time...

So here we go, it is probably psoriasis, eczema... Fungus etc...

Look online, you will find more info. I hope you all will sleep better tonight :P

Happy new year by the way... I wish you all the best!

Thank God, I am NOT alone. 29 year old male here and yes I scratch looking for flakes and yes, I even keep the "special" ones in a little tupperware.

Sad to say, but I'm pretty sure this is a mild obsessive compulsive disorder.

I can't see my scalp so it's hard to say for sure, but I have noticed that quite a few of the flakes I have pulled have a small, red dot (like the size of the period at the end of this sentence) in the center which I'm assuming is a small drop of dried blood/scab. So far this has not been painful to me.

Psoriasis may be a possibility, but I believe you may have missed the OP's point. This thread is about people who are "addicted" or do this compulsively, it goes beyond scratching because it itches (at least for me anyway), I for one enjoy scratching the dandruff from my scalp and even enjoy collecting the flakes that "stand-out" to me...

I think the only thing that will help the majority of the people in this thread is psychological/behavioral counseling, but I almost refuse to seek it because I enjoy this activity so much, I actually look forward to laying out a cloth of a contrasting color (I tend to use the red lining from an old jacket) and combing my hair endlessly to find "cool" and "unique" flakes of dandruff that are large or nearly symmetrical, etc...

1. I've done this for as long as I can remember.

2. I moved a LOT as a kid. By the time I was 10 I had already lived in 10 different cities. I still do move more often than most people.

3. I have social anxiety, stress, mild depression and possibly Borderline Personality Disorder.

4. I don't know if I feel that it relieves stress, but I do know it brings me enjoyment.

5. I do it whether it itches or not, it's like any other activity to me equivalent to hanging out with a friend or going to shoot some pool, except for me I put on some music or a movie and I scratch my head and collect the flakes and scabs.

6. I wouldn't say I feel sad, but it does disappoint me to not find any good flakes or scabs.
