i'm a 25 yr old male and i have had this problem for quite some years now.. i keep scratching my head and i do it to such an extent that there permanent marks on my scalp due to constant scratching. i do it even when there is no apparent need to scratch (that is there is no real itch).

i have observed that i scratch whenever i am studying, thinking, or even during the breaks i take while working. i'm guessing it is some sort of OCD and hope to see a doc soon. this problem has been affecting me badly in almost all the sphere of my life. i can not study properly, can not work efficiently and my gf is pissed whenever i scratch my head. more than that it hurts! i have dandruff but i don't think the scratching is merely about that.

hope we all get rid of this nasty habit or whatever it is.

I have all of the same symptoms: picking without actually having an itch (though I don't like to make it bleed), feeling the white under my fingernails, etc. But I also have a really bad habit of smelling my fingers afterwords. Usually nobody sees me do it, but when they do it's awkward.

Wow. Seriously, I thought I was the only person who did this. I've had dandruff/dry scalp since I was about 13 or 14 and I am now 34. I am also obsessed with scratching even when my scalp doesn't itch. I have to look at it under my fingernails and I also smell my fingers afterward, then flick it away. Looking at it fall on a surface and collect as I scratch, comb, or brush, or loosening a huge flake and pulling it down a strand of hair, then intently studying it as if I've never seen it before, are weird compulsions of mine. I am embarrassed and try not to let others see me do it, but I find it very hard to stop.

Ive done some research on the net, a scientist guy says that washing hair with mouth wash is one of the best ways to get rid of dandruff, mouthwash kills the yeast that causes dandruff, havent tried this. Ive often wondered if people with blonde hair get dandruff??? Irecently had my hair darkened with tint at hairdressers, i had no dandruff for just over a week. have to admit i missed creating the "snow showers"!!

At 23 years, long hair male, I am certainly addicted to brushing dandruff out of my hair... But I think that both the “white shower” and its settling on the objects around are disgusting. The only thing that drives me to constantly itch my head and brush my hair is the fact that the mere presence of dandruff on my scalp is intolerably disgusting, much more so than presence of dandruff on a desk, where I can collect it with a moist towel to get rid of it. I wish there was some magical way to get rid of flaking oily skin and grease deposits in my pores once and for all. If there is any compulsion I have, it is to get rid of things such as dandruff, pore filth, skin flakes, cuticles, slivers, basically anything that sticks out of smooth skin, anything that makes skin not smooth. Hate it, hate it like there's no tomorrow. The problem I keep having is not only that dandruff keeps being created, but I can't wash it out of my head completely, nor brush it out completely. Sets my teeth on edge.

So true my wavy black hair makes it look like a snowy forest if I scratch it for a long enough time I like to see the flakes but I'd rather not have them. garniar frutise anti dangruf seems to work fine it goes like this. The flake free 48 hours challenge is true it lasted 3 days after one wash i went back to axe phonex for rest 2 then little itty bitty flakes appear bigger ones then I scrash it for a while then I start bleeding then I got do what ever I was doing apply when taking shower again rinse repeat

Don't wash your hair as often.  When you get rid of the flakes, new skin will grow back and then that will flake.  Take that off, more skin will grow back, and so on.   If you wash your hair it helps dandruff. (at least in my case).

Also I notice the use of hair products greatly exasperates dandruff/dry scalp.  If I use a lot of Garnier Nutrisse spray gel my dandruff/dry scalp flares up.
