Hi there, I am currently on day 5 of recovery from a tonsillectomy and to be honest - it's been traumatic. I read all about people's experiences before I had the surgery done and so I knew what to expect, and really, there's no surprises there. I thought I should just put in my experience so far and offer some advice for people who are about to undergo a tonsillectomy. Well, after the surgery your throat shouldn't hurt so much but it should be itchy and you should feel a bit of pain. Eventually, the pain will increase and your ability to swallow will decrease as it will hurt a lot. I read somewhere on here that eating toast is good but it's really not. It's rough and thick, and I can guarantee you it will not go down your throat nicely without it feeling like a knife. Eat some yogurt, soup, eggs, anything that is soft. Do NOT consume anything acidic or spicy like lemon, honey, chilli. They will irritate your throat in the worst ways possible. You should eat some fish as it is easy to swallow and it is soft, but take care of the skin if it is fried or from the fish n chip shop. I advise you to keep swallowing fluids and try to use your tongue as often as you can because the more movement you make with your throat, the faster the healing process. Do not think keeping quiet and not causing any pain to your throat is the easy way out. It's the hardest. On the first day, I saw white stuff in the back of my mouth and immediately thought it was food. I was horrified and disgusted and attempted to poke it out, but my mum stopped me in time to tell me that it was medicine. She explained that the surgeons put it there as a 'bandaid' because if it wasn't there, the pain would be even worse. I'm not sure if any of you will or have the white medicine there but if you become confused about it or you were not told about it, don't be alarmed because it's there for the good. My doctor told my mum it should START to dissolve between the 5th and 7th day. It is doing so at the moment and it is causing unbelievable pain, but that's normal because of the medicine disappearing, once the worse has passed, it will start to heal and become better. Now, the saying about ice-cream and how you can eat it all you want is absurd. Whatever you do, do NOT consume ice-cream on the first two days because it can slow the process down of healing because it lowers your blood pressure. Try to avoid it until the third day onwards, don't be surprised if it causes pain because it can. When you go to sleep, you can only hope for the best and just try to relax. Take a panadol before you go to sleep so the pain will minimise and you can actually relax. In the morning, I can tell you it is the worst time because you have not used your throat at all for the past approximate 8 hours. So expect the worst pain of the day to be in the morning. I advise you to stock up on panadol as it has been essential for me. Take one in the morning after you get up, and wait a while to have breafast so you can swallow without too much pain. Then take another one before lunch, before dinner and then before bed. It really does help with the eating and swallowing. Expect to have some ear pain as I am experiencing at the moment, but it is different for some people so you may not have it. And don't watch any comedy movies, you will not like the outcome of laughing  XD . Well I hope this helps if you read it and I wish you all the best if you are expecting a tonsillectomy. It is not an easy time, but you just have to be brave and get through it. Stock up on panadol, soft foods and plenty of water bottles. I hope this wasn't too messy or all over the place but I hope you can get something from my experience so far. Good luck.
