I had surgery with Dr H..Harvard EYe...disappointed with the results...i wish i would have flown to Florida to Dr Gulani...Dr Hovanesian used my own tissue...& it turned out terrribly...my thoughts r this...my own tissue is obviously degenerative...thats why some of us get these & most people dont....Dr Gulani uses amniotic membrane/.....& has great testimonials... I live in So Cal & read these posts on here stating how great Dr Hovanesian was....so i went with him...& i am very unhappy with the outcome & now i have to live with these horrible results. Dr H had 18 surgeries scheduled the day of my ptergium surgery/.....i was #17 out of 18. I know i dont do my best work at the end of the day....maybe he didnt either...& now there is nothing i can do to fix it. My eyelids are all messed up...one eye is smaller than the other...scar tissue is raised up just like the ptergium was..the graft never laid smooth & flush with the eye..& had pupil dilation problems.....nurse also gave me wrong instructions (paper) wrong info...for eyedrops......outdated info apparently.....So...if i had it to do all over again...even tho i live in CA...i would have flown to Florida...to Dr Gulani....

@ above: i'm sorry that it did not go well =/

i've made up my mind to go to dr. gulani for the no-stitch amniotic membrane graft using a specialized glue.

i live in southern california too, and i wanted to go to dr hovanesian... now i see that the 6 hour plane flight will, in the long run, be less hassle than a half hour drive.

best of luck to everyone

I visited Dr. Gulani in Jacksonville about 2 years ago. I have pings in both eyes; they are prominent nasally, and red but not raised temporally. IN BOTH EYES. They appeared about 10 years ago (I am 34 now) and hate mine just as much as you all hate yours. So, Gulani is about an hour north of (very convenient) and I would NOT recommend him to my enemy. His website is very elaborate and I, too, felt hope after having viewed it. However, here's how the visit went:

I only wanted to be seen for the pinguecula (I had been diagnosed with it years earlier) and get an idea of how much treatment would cost. He gave me the FULL eye check-up, but I figured, "whatever". He noted the pings and briefly discussed treatment options, including plugs in my lower tear ducts, etc. When I asked him questions about these options (I had not heard of them prior to this conversation), he was impatient/cocky. He stated: "Don't worry about these details. I have all of the experience and knowledge about these procedures; that's why you came to me. You just place your trust in me and you will be taken care of". ?!

To boot, I had not met my deductible for my insurance, so I had to pay out-of-pocket the $280 for the visit. That was the bill total, $280. Some time later, I get another bill for $980!!! It had been passed on to my insurance company, who said that for the eye exam performed this was bogus.

And there's more!!! If you read around posts like these, you'll find the price of ping removal that Gulani has quoted other patients. I've seen $3000 and $4600/ping so far. He quoted me, taking me to the back room of the hospital and having a nurse 'break the news to me', get this: $16,000 per eye!!!!

WHAT is this?! Maybe the guy does have expertise, but he's also a crook. I continue to hear great things about this guy, Dr. H, in California. If he gets lots of happy patients on a regular basis and they all state the same round about quote of $3000 per eye, I'd fly across the country to see him before driving an hour to take my chances with Gulani.

Best of luck.
