I have been suffering from them for two years and while I imagine length depends on severity, or just case by case, mine have lasted up to 7-9 hours. Until I was recently put on Norco(off brand Vicodin), that is. The medicine really works, but it has its drawbacks. Like being high, nauseous and then a very deep sleep. Ibuprofen never made the pain go away, but it does help. Then you can try laying on your side, or if that proves to be too painful, sit in a high backed chair. My attacks are usually at night and the chair method usually lets me get some much needed sleep.

This just happened to me!! Did a CT (which is unneccesary and expensive) and said it must be the ovarian cyst they saw on CT. Went to a different ER a few weeks later and an ultrasound showed gallstones. Will have surgery within the next week or so.

you should insist on an ultrasound to confirm and get it out asap

I began having gallbladder attacks 40 years ago. No doctors diagnosed the problem correctly so I suffered with occasional, intermittent attacks of severe pain lasting 2 to 6 hours. I was hospitalized a few times but it wasn't until about 10 years ago that one doctor finally did an imaging test that confirmed a slow gallbladder -- no stones or sludge -- and he recommended removal of the gallbladder, but didn't tell me about the potential complications and limitations on what foods I would be able to eat, nor did he mention that many who have their gallbladder removed still have pain!

MY SOLUTION -- For the past 7 years the following routine has reduced attack frequency from twice a month to 1 or 2 times a year while also drastically reducing pain level and duration of the attack. Plus, as long as I am following this routine, I eat out once a week and eat whatever I want, cheeseburgers, onion rings, whatever, with no problems.

1. More fiber, less fat in my diet -- (for me pork is a trigger, no pork)
2. Regular, strenuous physical activity (Insanity DVDs 4 times a week)
2. More sleep before midnight
3. a mug of warm ginger tea before every meal (sliced ginger boiled in one quart of water for 10 minutes then refrigerated and warmed in microwave before drinking.)
4. 2 Tablespoons of shredded raw beats with flax oil and fresh lemon juice before lunch and dinner. I don't care for the taste but it REALLY helps -- even more than the ginger tea.
Granted, it's not easy but I still have my gallbladder and eat ice cream every night using this routine

ATTACK TREATMENTS ---
1. Narcotic pain relievers work sometimes but not always.
2. Mild attacks can be remedied with 3 tablespoons Organic apple cider vinegar (WITH the "mother") mixed with equal part apple juice or water. Be careful, this is very strong and hurts the throat. Severe attacks will only be temporarily reduced with this. (Most grocery stores sell Bragg's brand.)
3. Severe attacks are eliminated with -- Flax tea. Boil 2-3 tablespoons flax seeds in 1 quart of water for 5 minutes. Strain seeds out and discard, the liquid will become thickened and almost gel like. Slowly sip this while it's hot until pain is gone. It usually takes 2 or 3 mugs while I sit and watch something calming on TV. For me, this eliminate the pain and helps me get back to sleep every time.
4. Twisting stretches while seated on the floor seem to eliminate mild discomfort.
5. Sleeping on left side helps as well.
6. Hot showers or a heating pad on the upper right abdomen also help.

I sincerely hope this helps relieve someone's pain -- I know what it's like.

That sounds nuts. I'm not boiling beets and doing Insanity DVDs that's just crazy.

One quick harmless remedy is to drink a glass of ice cold water when you feel an attack coming on. This has worked for me and other people having gall bladder pain. A friend who is a Hospice nurse said it also works for Pancreatic Cancer patient having biliary colic pain. Can't hurt, might help.

I am new to gallbladder problems they run in the family but I am not sure if this is my problem. I have pain in all the right places but it has been dull with a few moment of really intense pain for 3 days now. Can it last that long or is it more likely to be a pulled muscle? Any help if much appreciated thank you

I have had intense pain deep to my sternum in 1996, then went and bought a book at health food store that told me how to flush them out and it worked in about five days. Alternate drinking apple cider vinegar or fresh squeezed lemon juice WITH extra virgin olive oil (about 1/4 cup). Do this 2-3 times per day. Also alternate drinking organic apple juice and chamomile tea. Avoid eating food while you are doing this. Drink lots of good water. Stretch. Rub the area right under left knee on left side until you burp. Make sure to have enough good apple juice, apple cider vinegar, fresh lemons and chamomile tea on hand. Within 24 hours of taking vinegar or lemon with olive oil - you should start to feel considerable relief. Try taking a good digestive enzyme like pancreatic (Amazon has many brands) that will help. Within one week, they should be dissolved enough to be excreted and you will see them in the toilet: Fatty round balls! This has worked for me. By the way, try to eat slower and avoid unhealthy fatty fried foods, too much - sugar, chocolate, alcohol, dairy, meat. Eat more salads, raw veggies (grated), drink kombucha, a little vinegar and water daily. This has all worked for me. Good luck.

For many months I was drinking a mixture of apple juice and cider vinegar. But a month ago I discovered that the cider vinegar capsules you buy in the vitamin section of the store work wonderfully. I usually have them on the first bite of a meal, 2 or 3 times per day. There appears to be a carry-over effect so that snacks go down fine too.
