You better go back for your masters, I have done drugs hard and soft for almost 50 years and spent some where in the high six digits. To spend $5-7K a month for years adds up fast. The drug never made me do things that were against my moral code like hitting some old lady in the head with a brick so I could get a fix. I always knew even before the injecting of the first bag the day of er conning would be coming some time sooner than others but I always knew it was coming. I believe we should give out the drug itself for free a benefit to society, the addict and most important the tax payer. To solve a medical problem with criminal laws makes me wonder who is smoking the crack. I also want you to notice after the article on baby's being addicted that next m***n who has no medical training says the research scientist is wrong, is that arrogance or what? Babies can't be born addicted to anything because to become addicted one must have a fully developed central nervous system something a baby does not have.

Get your facts straight before you share your opinion, and don't put people down when you don't know the truth. You shouldn't speak on something you know NOTHING about!!! Do some research. Methadone has saved many of lives when used correctly, including my own. Methadone has no euphoric affect, which means it does not get you high. If someone on methadone is "noting out" as you say, they either are on another medication as well, or are on too high of a dose. Methadone has a blocker in it so if you try to use heroin or other opiates, you will not feel it. Methadone is designed to slowly wean the patient off of the opiates without having withdrawals, giving them a much higher chance of succeeding and gives them time to get back on their feet and get used to living a normal life without using drugs or living the lifestyle that drugs evolve around. When coming off of opiates too fast causing the patient to experience withdrawals will be much more likely to relapse. Which is why methadone is given daily to prevent the withdrawals, and when the patient and counselor feels that they are ready, then taper off at a slow rate that they agree will work for them. Also, why methadone is not the same as using heroin or other illegal opiates, it is prescribed by a doctor, not found on the streets, therefor you know what it is your taking, not some poison somebody sold you in place of heroin and then you end up dying, it is taken orally, not injected into the veins or snorted up the nose, therefor there is no longer a chance of getting any diseases, overdosing, getting abscesses, or collapsed veins, etc, Also your not just going to get medicated, patients have a counselor they work with, they have to attend group therapy, take random urinalysis. Your opinion of every addict just uses it to get high or substituting one drug for another, you don't know every addict out there so you don't know everyone's intentions. Sure maybe some people don't care and just use it for the wrong reasons. But not everything works for everybody, the majority of people on methadone are trying to get their lives together, and if it works for them, why would you bash it? Let me tell you this, I was on methadone before I got pregnant. I followed the medical advice that was given to me by several doctors and health care professionals. They all said not to detox or come down on methadone. It does not cause any harm to the fetus such as birth defects etc, they said you are much safer on methadone than detoxing which causes stress on the fetus and may result in miscarriage, and it's much safer than taking the risk of relapsing and then using illegal street drugs, which can cause harm or defects to the fetus, taking a chance of overdose and causing death to you and the fetus, taking chances of catching hiv, hepatitis or other diseases, and going through withdrawals like I said before can result in miscarriage. Let's not forget about the low birth weight and premature births which usually doesn't happen when on methadone. The pros definatley out weigh the cons. Not all babies that are born on methadone have withdrawals, and if they do it is treatable and the babies grow up just fine just like other babies and live a normal healthy life.
I think you need to stop telling other people how they should live their life, and give people a little more credit for at least trying to live a better life, and start focusing on what you can do to make your own life better, and not put others down because you don't agree with their choices. Also, don't bash or down talk something that you know nothing about, get your facts straight before you give your opinion, and my last piece of advice for you is, when a person is close minded, theyre only proving how ignorant they really are!

I believe the reason methadone is preferred is because it removes the mother from the dangerous lifestyle associated with heroin addiction.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about. I am a methadone baby and I am know 18 years old, and still suffer from migraines from the methadone addiction my mother had while she was pregnant with my sister and I. Common Psychology teachers know this and teach this. METHADONE IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR BABIES.

Hi,

This is in response to the person who mentioned they adopted their younger sister -

I hope you don't mind me messaging you on here but I am working on a documentary for a major broadcaster on brothers and sisters who have adopted their younger siblings.

As I'm sure you know from your own experience these are quite unique stories so we are having to find stories through people such as yourself who have posted questions and their information on forums such as this.

Would it be possible for you to perhaps send me an email so I can tell you a little more about what we are doing and why we are doing it? Please be reassured that replying and getting in touch doesn't commit you to anything or being on TV - it would just be great to tell you more about the documentary we are working on.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Warm regards,

Chabris

No one dies from opiate withdrawal. If they died it sure wasn't from that ..they had to having something else wrong with them besides that! If you have never done methadone or heroin you have no idea what happens when someone is on methadone. You r not high at all nor do you feel high if that was the case everyone would stop using heroin and be on methadone. If you have never done heroin or methadone please do not share because you have no idea what you are talking about. I am now a drug counselor and yes I am on methadone and I live a productive life now..one that I could not do before. I do not nod and if someone does they are on too high of a dose and if someone is nodding they r not high.Anyway once you have doen heroin and methadone then you will understand , until then you will never understand.

I learned I was 5 weeks pregnant while actively abusing heroin.i got to the Methadone clinic immediately (5/2011) and was able to leave the heroin alone from there.my daughter was born 6 days early (my dose at the time she arrived was 120 milligrams)she was a healthy weight,& she never scored high enough on the Neonatal abstinence syndrome scoring scale to require medication of any kind (thank god).she was born on the 26th & released home just 5 days later on the 31st.things have developed significantly in this area over the past 5yrs.those 6-8week stays in the NICU for babies born to mothers on methadone are much more a thing of the past nowadays.i have to assume not all hospitals are on the same page as to how they approach this issue, but YNHH in ct is by far the greatest in handlings of this situation.my daughter continues to thrive,& most certainly has not suffered any type of problems cognitively, behaviorally, emotionally,or otherwise as a result of being born to a mom on methadone.

Hi Guest
There seems to a lot of controversy over this subject.
Sorry to hear about your health issues and it is wonderful you have cut down on the amount you take and are trying to do the best for your baby.
If I could suggest one thing it would be talk with your doctor about this and if needed you can be referred to a doctor that specializes in this type of birth.
You will get the answers that you need including what needs to be done to give your baby the best chance possible for being born healthy along with what is best for your health needs.
Good luck I hope everything works out well for you and your baby in a case like yours professional opinions with proper diagnoses is what is needed for both of you.

I hate to hear your daughters story but I don't think it was the clinic that was misinforming you, but yet the babys doctor apparently didn't know how to handle a dependent newborn???? I have had 3 pregnancies and 4 kids on methadone and my 16 year old came home on day 2 NO WITHDRAWALS, My 11 year old came home on day 3 with me as I had a C-Section, NO WITHDRAWALS. my 2 year old twins were born 6 weeks and 4 days early and weighted 3.4 and 3.6 and went to the NICU but I KNEW who my babies doctor was gonna be because when I was 3 months pregnant I went looking for pediatricians that specialize in dependent born newborns, as if you don't than they give you a doctor that's on call and you now nothing about? Its kinda like going to the Dentist if you break your leg???? My twins was given .01mlgs of methadone 3 times a day on day 4, than on day 6 they were given. 01mlgs 2 times a day than on day 8 they was given. 01mlgs 1 time a day than when they were close to 5 pounds they came home with me they were 11 days old and I gave them their medication at home? Once they reached 9 pounds 6 weeks old the babies doctor informed me to take the babies off cold turkey ( I was scared to death) but I also trusted this doctor cause he said they had outgrown their dose, which remember their dependent not addicted, so I took them off and from there on didn't have one problem! I'm definitely sorry for your experience but some people may need methadone for life as you wouldn't ask a dibetic to just abruptly stop their insulin right? Addiction is a diease! I'm not going to stop my wonderful life of Recovery because I have to have a medication to help me Recovery? I have 5 amazing girls ages 26, 16, 11, and 2 year old twins and I've never once seen any of them go threw withdrawals! Getting a good doctor is always the key! I hope if this does happen again you know a little more information about how to handel it cause methadone saved not only my life but the lives of my 5 beautiful girls!!!!!
