I never found anything to help me or what made it stop, but I can tell you my digestive track has never been the same. I will switch gears from being constipated and the next day I'm peeing out my butt and having to use immodium. It's frustrating, but thank God the gas pain and bloating has went away.
One thing I've started doing recently is taking a priobotic, but I cannot confirm or deny that it has actually helped me. I feel a little better, but I still suffer from either extreme or the other. Least it is less frequently. I can eat X on this day and be fine. I eat X on another day and it makes me sick. No rhyme or reason.
Cannot give you advice about your dog, but I hope he gets better soon. Did he eat anything that he shouldn't recently? The vet should have been able to give you an answer. If you have the money, I'd see a second vet.

My symptoms are exactly the same. If I eat less or smaller meals, the problem isn't too bad. It just came out of nowhere. Also, when I get so bloated, it is always worse on the left side of the body. Sometimes, it causes a pressure in my head and dizziness too. It makes me nervous as to what it really is.

This description (and many other posts here) all sound like HYPOCHLORHYDRIA - very low stomach acid. Easily fixed by taking Betaine supplements (with added Pepsin) before every meal. You may need to take anywhere from 1-7 tablets initially but after 3-6 months your body will start to produce its own acid again. Please do a google search on this very common but rarely diagnosed problem and you will see all your symptoms listed. Don't know why doctors don't address this as it is root cause of a lot of GERD/IBS/ULCERS etc. Good luck
