yes you are right i just had this problem, your body is meant to break down the food but it sometimes doesnt happen if you are run down etc. i went back to the surgeon and she rinsed it out with a syringe and put a dressing down the small hole to relieve pain and make sure its all clean. although she said not to rinse out the hole unless needed and never do it more than once a day
hope this helps

I've experienced the same bad breath caused by an abscessed tooth. Brushing, mouthwash etc. doesn't get rid of the odour, the only thing that has worked for me has been to rinse my mouth with hydrogen peroxide.

After going through all these questions which you guys have placed my advice is this. After wisdom tooth extraction if there is a discharge of mucus, pus or blood from the nose its because of the sinus involvment. Its a messy situation. One has to start an antibiotic asap like Cindamycin 600 mg 3 times a day.Another thing is that you have to visit your ortho surgeon so that he can assess how big is the hole(fistula)which is connecting space between your wisdom tooth and sinus. If it s big than you have to have a maxillofacial surgery,if not he can place one or two stiches trying to close it up and if you are lucky it'd close by itself after this.If not prepare yourself for surgical showdown.

I had horrible pain and a horrible constant taste in my mouth after the 4th day of recovery and my oral surgeon told me he had to see me because he thought I may have had either an infection or a dry socket, (but I couldn't since I was 400 miles away at college) so I went to see an oral surgeon here today (6 days after surgery). He concluded that I had a dry socket, and that the taste was the dislodged blood clot in my lower-left side that caused the pain/taste. The taste he added was due to the blood clot decomposing in my mouth (gross). The dental assistant cleaned that side out with a salty tasting solution in a plastic, curved syringe (a lot of junk came out). She then filled it with this even nastier tasting thing which my regular oral surgeon is now going to have to remove when I see him. It's supposed to help the dry socket. Now the original nasty taste is replaced by an even nastier (yet more subtle and relieving) taste in my mouth.

I just had a upper wisdom tooth extracted in visit at the dentist. It gave me problems for 5 months (Didn't have $$ so I lived with it that long). It got infected and caused unbelievable pain. So after the extraction (Only took 45 minutes) I was bleeding HEAVILY. I was kept longer then any other patient he had. I was not stitched up. Over the night I felt GREAT! (Even without taking any pain meds - only penicilin for the infection). Next day I woke up with blood EVERYWHERE. It ruined all my pillows, my matress and blankets. THere is a HORRID taste and odor. I went back to the dentist this morning and he was suprised I was still bleeding heavily but there is nothing that can really be done. The gum was torn from the jaw bone. So more vicoden and away I went. But I found rinsing my mouth 5-6 times a day with warm salt water helps then I follow it with GENTLY swishing a non alchoholic based mouth wash. But I talked with all my friends and they had the same complaint so I guess this is fairly normal. I do not have dry socket. So I keep a pocket anywhere toothbrush and just brush often to keep the taste out of my mouth (which was making me throw up). Hope this helps ya out. And like one of you posted, I have blood in my sinus cavities, and it caused one hell of an earache and causes me to feel very unstable. Good luck and god bless.

I just had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. All impacted meaning they had to be cut out. I also had the pain and the bad taste on my lower two. The pain is due to the exposed nerve from the surgery. In most of the postings, it looks like everyone is describing dry socket. It is caused by the clot not taking, therefore exposing the nerve and creating a secretion of a bitter sometimes yellow fluid. Any kind of sucking such as using a straw, smoking or just trying to suck food out of the area can cause the clot to dislodge. Also drying out your mouth by talking too much seems to cause it. You can go back to your oral surgeon and they will pack your socket with a clove gauze. This will take away the pain and the leaking of fluid. However, fair warning... the clove taste is horrible and takes several days to go away but helps it to heal quicker without a whole lot of pain. There are home remedies to try. You can search the internet for those. Best is to take any of the meds you were prescribed and continually rinse with warm salt water. This will help to clean out the food that may get stuck. The salt will also help to attract moisture to the socket. Take ibuprofen for pain. Takes about 4-6 weeks to heal.

In addition to antibiotics, do not blow your nose, sneeze hard, or hack up anything for a couple weeks and GENTLY rinse your mouth multiple times per day with hot salt water (really salty). You want the hole between your mouth and your sinuses to heal, so you have to protect the whole system from germs and additional trauma.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed about 8 days ago. I noticed my left side wasn't healing as fast as the right and I started getting a really bad pain in my lower jaw that went all the way up into my ear and temple. I went to my oral surgeon today and he told me it was not a dry socket thank gosh but what he said is that I had pulled the muscle that was attached to bone. When you get your teeth removed the dentist has to pull that muscle back in order to get the teeth out of there and the muscle will attach back the bone naturally. After day 5 I started eating solid food BAD IDEA, I ended up tearing the muscle off and the process will have to start over. I am on another round of antibiotics as well. Wait at least a week until you eat things like chips, or you might tear that muscle out. Oh and that bad odor/ nasty tasting liquid is decomposed food. Not too big of a deal if you cleanse it after every meal. You don't want bacteria to grow in there or it will turn out bad. My dentist also said not to use hydrogen peroxide I'm not sure why but just use the hot salt water. Hope this helps :-)

Hi,
I just had my wisdom teeth out three days ago. I had all four removed at once. I have TMJ, so I'm in excruciating agony pretty much all the time, even through the percocet. My dentist prescribed two painkillers for me, I have ibuprofen (which you can easily find at the apothecary) and percocet, both can be taken no sooner than six hours after the last dose. In order to avoid having times where the medication wears off and I wake up crying in agony, I stagger the meds. So at 9am I take a percocet, and then at 12 noon, I take an ibuprofen. When it comes time for my next dose of percocet at 3pm, I take it, and so with ibuprofn at 6pm. That way, there's always a cushion for me to not have to feel the full wrath of my jaws.
As mentioned the bad taste/smell is easy to take care of with a syringe, just be very, very gentle with it. Id you use too much pressure you can dislodge the clot that's helping to heal your gum, and then you get a dry socket.
NEVER ICE YOUR FACE AFTER THE FIRST 24 HOURS! It actually makes the swelling worse. Use a hot pack or a hot wet washcloth. It might make the pain a little worse for a bit, but it actually helps your body to drain the swelling. I've been using gel packs and hot washcloths, as well as putting benzocaine ointment directly on to my gums and surrounding teeth.

Also, sleep a whole bunch. I had to go to an interview the day after my surgery and it completely wiped me out. Healing is time consuming and exhausting, give your self ample time to chill and get better. Anything that raises your blood pressure with increase the pain drastically. Anything that requires your head to be below the level of your heart will make the pain and pressure unbearable. Just take it easy.

Hope this helped!
Cheers.

Hey everyone, I am going into my recovery for my wisdom teeth right now it's been about 2 weeks and my pain is finally gone and that's someone who didn't really follow the recovery instructions I was eating burgers and sucking on straws that very same day which was a bad idea and I suggest you all just follow the instructions and the recovery will be faster and less painful, anyways I'm here to let you guys know that Ive been having the same problem for about the last 9 days brown disgusting pus/mucus type stuff coming out of my top left wisdom extraction hole it's absolutely disgusting and annoying I know how you all feel! I've been avoiding my girlfriend because of it too, there are some ways to can fix and make this better, first don't blow your nose! I did this and a whole bunch of this liquid squirted out of the hole and I almost threw up, make sure you are rinsing your mouth with warm salt water it burns for the first few days! So I suggest you fill up a cup of water just to make it better, this disinfects the cuts do it every day 4-5 times a day every 4-5 hours or after every meal, then the most important part how to decrease the nasty taste and make your breath better, if you have hydrogen peroxide put a small amount on a cup not too much and rinse your mouth with it it will bubble but it will make your injuries heal fast! And kill the taste of it for a while at least but keep doing it again and again throughout the day, again for the first couple of times it will burn a little so some cold water to rinse after will help, then for the breath to get better wet your toothbrush and place some baking soda on it, yes baking soda actual baking soda not baking soda from toothpaste, brush your teeth and it won't only kill the taste and odor for a couple of hous but it will give you WHITE TEETH!! haha so you gain out of it, if you also like you can brush your teeth with actual toothpaste better if it's baking soda with peroxide type of toothpaste and k promise you it will help you will still get liquid coming out for a while but you can put some gauze on it and it will make it better after a few times doing these procedures the taste will be slowly gone, hope this helped! and hang in there it will pass just be patient, be glad you got over it and you will soon be fine and never have to deal with it again! Cya!

Hey, I don't know if my case is any similar but I still have the nasty smell in my nose and it leaves an ever more horrible aftertaste in my mouth.

I had 3 appointments with my regular dentist over the last 2 weeks during which she pulled one of my lower wisdom teeth because it had gone rotten, and she also removed a stray root I had left on my upper right mandible from an unfinished dental job I had gotten while serving my tour of duty from some jackass military dentist.

If that helps as she pulled the root out she also pulled a bit of the cyst that seemed to be wrapped around it. Needless to say it was disgusting. I keep all the teeth i had pulled out of me ever since I was a kid, like you know they were a part of mine and I like to keep them close, but I wanted nothing to do with that!!! Told her this one goes straight in the bin and I don't wanna know about it.

That was yesterday and ever since then my nose is dripping nasty, smelly, yellowish pus like never before. She told me I should blow my nose as much as I could to keep the airways clear and get rid of the excess pus. I should note I only get the awful smell out of my right nostril which coincidentally is on the same side as the cyst ridden root I had pulled out.

Although that wasn't when it started. It actually started when I first got the antibiotic she prescribed me for treating an abcess I had on another tooth. The antibiotic was Augmentin. At least that is it's commercial name here in Europe. It's basically a 1000 mg tablet, 875 mg amoxicilline and 125 mg clavulanic acid that I have to take every 12 hours. I'm sure there's something similar in the American market.

Although my dentist insists that the pus in my nose has nothing to do with the root she removed I respectfully think she's wrong and I've told her but you know how doctors are.

Fact of the matter is I think when I first got the antibiotic it attacked both the abcess it was originally prescribed for AND that nasty, horrible cyst. And that's why I started getting the nasty smell in my nose but when I blew my nose almost nothing came out save very little nasty smelling snot. And as of yesterday when she finally pulled the root out it went off the charters. My nose is now dripping thick, yellowish, nasty pus all the time and I gotta keep a handkerchief by my side at all time and it gets soaked useless pretty fast, too!!! I'm going through them so fast I can't believe it.

Thing is I feel no real swelling where the cyst should be and though it kinda hurt at the base of the root before I had it pulled out it hardly hurts any now. But the pus won't stop coming and I'm really worried as to where the heck it's all coming from!!! And it certainly won't do any wonder for my social life either. My God, does it stink!

It just sounds like a sinus infection. I had my 2nd molar on top left side extracted and my roots penetrated my sinus cavity. If you are getting blood in your mucus especially, thats a sure sign of a sinus infection (with really bad frontal lobe headaches follow suite or sometimes just the headache.) I can't blow my nose either I have deconjestants that I am constantly taking as well as the antibiotics for the infection. But the hole when I try to make sure that it is clean is releasing some narly tasting stuff.. Which I was told by my dentist is just puss from the tooth cavity trying to heal. It tastes almost like blood to me, but dentist says its healing just fine. Hope this helps.

the dark colored mucus that comes up is just drainage from the holes, such as blood and mucus.
