Glad it's going so well for you. Tomorrow makes four weeks since my HOLEP procedure. No blood in urine, and sleep through most nights, as long as I don't drink a glass of water before going to bed! I suppose they really "manhandle" you during the surgery, as my previously almost-non-existent foreskin is really distended and bloated. No pain, but it's is peculiar. Also, at times my stream suddenly turns right almost 90 degrees for no apparent reason. A couple things to talk about with Lingeman on the 26th, but overall I'm ecstatic about my decision to have HOLEP done.

Watch out for that 90 degree turn!

After having the surgery myself, I felt like I could help by informing anyone looking into this surgery with any info and personal experiences as possible. I found this site and others helpful and informative . By nature , I want to know what is going to happen when going into surgery. I dont like to enter into it blind. If any of my comments have helped someone , I am glad to have been of service. It would be a shame for someone to settle for an open when this is available.

I come from a large extended family with many cousins coming of "AGE" so I have been open and candid with them .   This has been a life changer for me.  I hope you find it the same for you.

Yes, I totally agree--a life changer and scarry. I am now 59 and never had a serious surgery. When they-the Urologists- talked about an Open Prost. I was freaked out-very concerned and worried. HTey talked abot 4-5 days in the hospital with transfusions and a bag after discharge. The Holep was a great alternative and should be the new 'gold standard'. The more candid info the better-- Your comments have helped me-so thank you. Bill

I totally agree-your candid comments have helped me.

This is a very scarry situation-talk of an Open is frightening: 4-5 days in the hospital, transfusions, bag upon discharge. Yuck.

The Holep was a great alternative-

Hi Ken ,

The 90 degree turn happened to me as well.  In fact for the first couple days  my stream was like a scattergun!

In order to accept the resectescope I had to have a Urethrotomy, an internal incision to enlarge the diameter of the urethra.  Not everyone needs this but I did. This procedure also enlarges the meatus, the opening of the urethra. The glans is made up of tissue that does not adhere to itself well after being cut. Therefore my opening will be slightly larger from now on.  This procedure also is a precaution against strictures caused by irritation of the resectescope . Larger diameter, less friction and stress on the tissue. I am glad the Dr took this precaution ,as strictures are difficult to deal with.

I do not know if you had this done but it could be part of the reason for your rebellious stream! My stream is much larger than before but I have not had any problems with control after a couple weeks.

I am not circumcised and experienced no problems with my foreskin. I did however notice my erections improved!

This surgery has been a huge difference in my life.  I have an elderly Uncle that had the Green light laser with poor results ,to be followed with a turp. He is now noticing his stream slowing down again. He is still very active and healthy. He may need another procedure again! I was assured this surgery will last a lifetime.! That is good news to BPH sufferers!

Al the best to you,

I live in the UK and we are usually years behind the US on surgical procedures. PVP took about four years to cross the Atlantic. I had mine in 2005 however as is the case of many who have had TURP or PVP procedures if you live long enough you will need another. Now we have HoLEP and Thulium lasers procedures and I have not heard of the open procedure being used exept for prostate cancer for many years.Even with PC open surgery seems out of favour in the majority of cases.
Now at 78 my prostate has regrown to 130 grms. This time I have decided on the Thulium laser in preference to PVP or HolEP

Hello Just Me:

I learned that I still have some residual in the bladder -about 100ml after urinating. The urologist expects it will improve in time since I am only 2 weeks post HoLep-- Your thoughts?

Otherwise, am doing well and grateful for Dr. Lingeman.

Glas to hear you are doing well.

Bill ,

I have noticed those of us who have had this surgery seem to progress in different areas.  You should see an improvement within a few more weeks.  On my 6 week  checkup I was so empty they had a hard time even finding my bladder!  Im sure you have already experienced a tremendous improvement in your flow.  I was shocked the first time I urinated how large a stream I had .

I am also grateful to Dr Lingeman .  It is amazing when you think of the number of people he has helped so dramatically.

How did you do on your way home?

Have you experienced any discomfort during or post urinating?

Thanks for your input and encouragement.

I hope all the best to you

Absolutely no problem flying home--did not need a pad-no pain and no dribbling. No problem with control since discharge-I peed like normal.

 Yes, quite a good flow.

I think you are right in that things will improve in time as far a retaining less in the bladder.

Like you, I am also grateful to Dr. Lingeman and staff-they are outstanding.

Hi Bill,

Im wondering how you are doing lately.  You seem to have done remarkably well .  I was curious If you had experienced any discomfort during or after urinating?  I participate in another site on Steady Health that deals with experiences of HOLEP.  Several of us have experienced some minor discomfort  a few weeks after the procedure. It seems to be  a normal part of the healing process. I experienced it for a couple weeks . At 50 days post surgery it stopped.

Oct 22 marks my 4th month after my surgery. I am doing fantastic! I am experiencing some stress incontinence , but I can see it is improving.

Hoping for your continued improvement

Hi Just Me:

Good to hear from you--there has been no discomfort during or after urinating.

Yesterday, I noticed a little "puffing" at the bladder area so we went to the ER and I have a minor urinary tract infection. We are treating it with antibiotics. I was more concerned that I might be retaining urine in my bladder, but , fortunately, a bladder scan found I had about 75-95 ml. --and they called it "normal". They also said there was a very little blood in the urine and that should be expected.

We (my wife and I ) were being extra precautious and we caught the UTI very early. Other than that, no issues or other problems.

I am amazed at how well things have gone-- several other people (friends and family) have noted how well the procudure went and the recovery.  Thank you for your interest.. how are you doing???

Just me:
When you say "stress incontinence"- what do you mean?
Upon discharge, Methodist Hospital gave me pads--I used one for a day but it was not necessary-there was no leakage, no drainage, etc.-- so I tossed them all while in Indianapolis. I have had no issues re: peeing, control of timing, or anything else.
Perhaps a call to Dr. Lingeman's nurse would be appropriate?

Hi Bill,

Stress incontinence is when your body is under some form of stress such as lifting, or  bending ,ect  .

There is  no problem now with incontinence except while working.  The job I have is rather strenuous..  I have been building up my

pelvic floor muscles by doing pelvic floor exercises.   It was discussed with Dr Paonessa

and she said it would improve over time and not to be concerned about it. I have improved considerably since my last visit.

Living in the state , I when to Indianapolis for a consultation a month and a half prior to my surgery.  I was

examined had some blood work  and set up my appointment at the consultation.  Since you were so far out of state , you obviously

didnt have to see Dr Lingeman or Dr Paonessa until your surgery date .   Did you have a consultation by phone ? Was your first

meeting immediately  before your surgery?

I have noticed everyone who has this surgery has a little  different set of issues ,but all agree , it has improved the quality of their

life .  Some have no problem with any incontinence at all from the beginning. I did. But I never had any problem with an infection.

Hoping for your continued improvement ,

just me

Hello Just Me:

I met with Dr. Lingeman the day before surgery for a consult. I had most of the pre-op blood work and EKG done locally in CA and fax'd to Dr. Lingeman.

I agree with you--everyone who has the surgery has a little different set of issues-- for me: no incontinence, but a recent minor infection. I am peeing well-good stream and only up once per night.

My job is all deskwork--I am still taking it easy per doctors orders. Overall, I am also quite pleased with HoLep (really amazed actually--it could be so much worse as evidenced by postings on several other sites).

Best of luck for your ongoing  improvement.

Bill
