I had bilateral bunion surgery on both feet at the same time. The cut a notch in the big toe bone, put it in the correct place then screwed it in place. My Dr prefers screws to pins since they don't need to be removed unless you have a problem with them wich is not usually the case. Also reduced the knuckle that stuck out the side, had to shorten the outer tendon and the 2 upper tendons. I should be able to return to my warehouse job in 8 weeks.
I has bunion surgery on both feet. The first one in Mar 05 went very well. I was running, with slight pain, in about 2 1/2 months. Today there is no pain. I had the other surgery in Nov 06 and I'm still experiencing discomfort. With this foot the Dr placed a pin in my foot. I'm not a Dr but the foot w/o the pin I have no pain. The one with it, I feel discomfort.
I went back to the Dr. She says sometimes it can take a year to heal. She suggested that I buy new running shoes. I found this really dishearting because it's not realistic to buy all new shoes.

Hello everyone i had my bunion surgery done yesterday on my right foot & everything went fine. i did not have any bad side effects to the aneithesia. the only thing I can really complain about is that all of my toes are numb and I am not sure how long this is suppost to lastt. So, far its been 24 hours. I hope this is normal!
I had the surgery on my right foot on July 5, 2007 and have had no pain. It's normal for the foot to stay numb for a few days. I had my bunion removed and my next 2 toes shortened to correct hammertoes. I just had my pins taken out of my toes yesterday and have on tennis shoes today! I'm having my left foot done on September 27th and do not dread it at all. My surgery was at 6:30 in the am and my doctor told me to take a pain pill at 1:30 p.m. and I never took another thing for pain.
I would suggest if anyone has pain to call the doctor because something has gone wrong.
Happy with my surgery!

I am one week post op today! Bunions removed from both sides of my left foot. Two screws on small toe side and one pin on big toe side. I personally used one pain pill every 4 hours. I was on the pain meds 5 days, which my dr. thought was pretty good. Without the meds in time, my foot felt like it was in a vice grip. If I took them right at 4 hours, it really was not that uncomfortable. Keep your foot up, ice around the ankle, and stay ahead of the pain with your meds. Crutches for 3 weeks and limited walking for 6 weeks after that. Incisions were both on the top of my foot.
I had my right foot done in April of 07. I had a bunionectomy, a hammertoe straightened, and my third toe straightened as well. My third toe had curled under my second toe. I had pins in my second and third toes. They were taken out at 7 weeks. Then I could drive. I have a screw in my bunion and always will. In hindsight recovery was hard but manageble. I am a mom of a 5 and 3 year old with an upstairs. I had my other foot done two weeks ago (Nov. 9th, 07). Everything is going even better this time. Pain, swelling and all. My Podiatrist said the swelling will all be down in a year, but after 2 months the majority of it was down the first time around. To all who may have this: It is great. Just get a great doctor for it. I live in Tulsa and can recommend Dr. Crotty. She is great!
I had no problems healing from the bunion surg. both feet healed very well. On Jan 15th I had a third surgery on 3 hammer toes that didn't heal out well from the first two surgeries (they stuck up off the floor when I walked). Got a second and third opinion before going in for the 3 surgery. Second opion dr.s agreed that I needed implants because my toes were collapsing from having too much bone removed in the prior surgeries. Healing out fine now and am very happy with the results, they look more normal and the pain is gone....one toe is completely numb though....I doubt I'll get the feeling back but still don't regret doing it.
I had bunion and hammer toe surgery on April, 7, 2008. I was in a hard cast for 7weeks and could not place any weight on my foot. The cast went up to my knee but I couldnt see my toes because the cast was aso protecting the pin in my second toe. The cast came off and the pin came out last week, after 7 weeks. I am now in a walking cast, but still was advised not put any weight on it. My doctor took xrays and found the bone to be 2/3 of the way healed. I was advised not to place weight on it because she wants to make sure the bone is healed comlpetely. She described the removeal of the bone and how the screw is holding the bone together. If I was to place weight on it, it would act like a hinge and bend and then heal that way. I would then have a deformed foot forever.
I am an active person and this been hard to be down for almost two months now. But I was in so much pain before, I know this will be worth it. Sseeing as how we are all human and all heal the same way (not necessairly at the same rate), it is impossible to have bunion surgery and walk in 24 hours. Even my doctor says so.
My foot is still partly numb, but I have a walking cast now and a bone stimulator to aid the healing of the bone. As I said, I cannot place any weight on it, yet. I have aother a few weeks before I go back. I am really goodon my crutches now. :-) I went to the movies last night and it was great to get out. So hang in there and do what your says. If not it will effect you for the rest of your life.

I had surgery on July 3/08 on both feet for hammertoes plus had a bone grown removed which grew on top of my big toes after my bilateral bunion surgery (12 years ago). I am not in too much pain but my feet tend to go numb. I'm taking Tylenol with Codeine every three to six hours. Doctor told me that I need to move to get rid of the numbness, but trying to get around is hard enough even with a walker or crutches. Also that is when they tend to go numb. All I have been doing to try to reach into the bandages and massage those toes that were not operated on. I have pins which will be removed in 5 weeks. In two weeks I will be going in for xrays and have the stitches removed. Hopefully I will be able to walk around the house a little better. These medical people need to come up with a better shoe for us to wear.
I had surgery on three hammertoes on both feet two weeks ago. I was on tylenol 3 for 3 days and after that the odd pain killer. Stitches were taken out two days ago. I have pins in all three and will remain in there for another 3 weeks. My feet have been rewrapped which makes it hard to walk so that means staying put until I go back to see him. I am happy I had this procedure done on because I was only able to walk 30 minutes at a time. My toes with the pins are numb when I walk or stand for too long but I figure once the pins are out they should start feeling better. He does not recommend physio once everything has healed. One has to be remember not to over-extend yourself with walking or running after this surgery. Time will heal.
I would definitely recommend this surgery especially if you trust your surgeon, which I did.

bunion surgery isn't as painful as one may think.
it depends solely on the person and your tolerance for pain.
and ability to heal.
bunions, if left untreated, will only get worse and more painful.
the sooner treated, the better the results.
like anything else.

i had a bunionecotomy with osteotomy about 4 weeks ago. I have one pin in my big toe and two in my first metatarsal. I had a piece of bone removed from the joint and also from the toe. The first day I was able to go out to eat that evening and have a margarita no problem... was out again the next day no problem. Within a week, I was at the gym pedaling (slowly) on a stationary bike. At 4 weeks, I am back in the gym on an arc trainer (elliptical type machine). I was also able to go back to work only a few days after my surgery. I drove with my left foot because I didn't want to mess around with taking my cast on and off to drive. After four weeks, I definitely do not need a cast... can walk with just surgical shoe on...
Bottom line... bunionectomy is not that bad at all. I may have had an extraordinary experience, but if you don't let the foot control you , but listen to it when you do too much, you'll be fine.

Can anyone recommend a GREAT surgeon in the NY/Long Island area? I have put off bunion surgery for so long...but the time has come. Thanks
Hi everybody! I am a lady 58 y.o. and had my bunions (on both feet) and hammertoes (3 on each foot) done on March 18/09. Instead of 3 hours the surgery took 5 hours. I ended with 1 big toe fused and a plate there, the other big toe with a screw. Both plate and screw are for good. Hammertoes with pins. Not much pain, took percosets for 2 days. Used office chair to move around the apartment, couldn't walk at all.
Started walking a little bit in foam walkers 4 weeks after surgery. In 6 weeks had pins removed, the doctor told me to wear foam walkers for 3 more weeks, then gradually move to regular or walking shoes with extra room in front. Right now I don't have pain, just numbness and discomfort. My feet are swollen, blue colour, toes look like small sausages. I like my feet elevated in the lazy-boy chair, just socks and on the heating pad, ice causes cramps. Now I regret not straightening up my little toes, they never bothered me but now they look so different.
So it looks like I'll be off work for 6 weeks all together, but my job demands lots of walking and standing. Good luck with healing for those who had surgery and good luck with surgery for those who are going to have it.

May I ask, how old were you when surgery was done? Was it an Orthopaedic Surgeon that operated on you? the reason I ask,my 80 year old Mother's bunion and hammertoe is getting worst on the right and the left is getting to this as well. She sees her podiatrist every 3 months for routine maintenance. My main concern is there are not going to be any shoes out there that would fit her growing feet soon and also this has really affected her walking and causes her pain on her leg. She is really skeptical of surgery - she could have had one done 15 years ago but she refused as long as she has comfortable shoes and she did as she was able to hike Seneca Rocks when she was 78. But when I see her feet now, I feel the pain. Help!
