I am a slim 33 years old and 55kgs. 6 months ago I woke up to find my stomach distended to the size of a woman 6 months pregnant (I get 'congratulated' all the time), although I am not pregnant. When the swelling first happened I was nauseas and vomited for a day. Since then, the distension only ever resides slightly and some days it gets so bad that it covers my ribs and effects my breathing (I think this is because it's presssing on my diaphram). I've been to a gastroentarologist several times for numerous tests, including a endoscopy. I've had blood and stool tests done, and nothing is showing up. The specialist has said I am getting these symptoms because I am stressed, but I believe that this is just their way of finding a solution for something that they can not diagnose. My symptoms are: headaches, bleeding gums, constant thirst, vomiting (undigested food), nausea and a pain about 2 inches above my belly button. I have a hiatus hernia (possibly related? the doctor's don't think this is causing my symptoms) and, until last week, was usinga Mirena. I am totally worn out from the stress and of this situation and the effect it is having on my life. I am normally active (kickbox 5hrs a week)but now struggle to find the energy to do anything. Please help.
I'm a 35 year old woman who had this same thing develop over the past few months. I've always had plenty of "junk in my trunk" but never a large stomach. Initially, I ignored it, thinking it was just a shift in weight or constipation build-up. But after having trouble breathing one night from it being so big and after a few blunt friends asked if I was expecting a girl or a boy, I finally went to my family pracitioner this week.
She tested me for celiac and some other absorption conditinos. She also sent me for ultrasounds - one abdominal and one uterus/ovaries. I'm waiting to hear back on all of them and will check back. But if any of you just self-referred to a GI doc, you may want to consider going to an Ob/Gyn or a family pracitioner - these symptoms are not necessarily GI related.

o my gosh! i get the same exact symptoms as you. its all flat in the morning but as soon as i eat or drink something(even if its just a small snack like crackers) its distends so much! thats why i have to continue to eat small snacks throughout the day. the more i eat or drink, the more it bloats. it doesnt even matter what i choose to eat, whether vegetables or breads, it still bloats the same.
ive just recently gone to a holistic practitioner tho and she gave 2 kits to do to run tests on myself. she suspects celiac disease, which i had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done for when i was 15 and came out neg. and was diagnosed with IBS. but now at 20 im getting blood testing for celiac disease. the 1st kit i took was for unhealthy bacterias, parasites, yeast infection, and other stuff. the 2nd kit is the celiac, antibodies, and food and inhalant allergies. im still waiting for the results of these 2 tests.
i also have a number of other problems on top of this stupid bloating problem. recurrent left ear infection(despite antibiotics), recurrent nausea(especially after eating), rash on chest arms back and stomach(but not itchy or blistery like DH), brain fog(usually happens in morning after eating breakfast;it feels like something in my head just got cut off or shut down, impaired thinking i guess; happens once or twice a week), geographic tongue(looks glossy and purplish-blue color--riboflavin deficiency(despite taking a high B-vitamin supplement)), canker sore on gum, vaginal discharge(color changes from white like a yeast infection to green like the green goe from my ear infection), ridges on nails like im anaemic but was never tested for that although i get cold really easily and nails turn blue when i freeze (when i get too cold sometimes my body has trouble trying to warm itself and i end up shaking like a dog for 30 mins to an hour just jerking in chills--very abnormal since nobody i know has ever gotten that), fatigue(not all the time but usually happens with the brain fog), food regurgitation(not acid, but "food" comes up my throat like my body doesnt want it; usually happens with ice cream, not milk or cheese--the syrup from the ice cream comes up if my belly is too full or if i ate a lot of it to where i have to spit it up(might be slight lactose intolerance or more specifically sugar intolerance((seeing how it's syrup))), constipation, acne, and anxiety.
i was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism in june when i was messing up my ovaries cuz i was going on and off birth control and wasnt taking it like i was supposed to, but that pill did make me feel overall unhealthy nonetheless. now as of november 10th, i have stopped taking synthroid for my thyroid and have realized that that is not the root cause of all my problems. despite all of these complications i have learned much about the potential illnesses or diseases i could have and the links between them all; especially yeast in the colon and celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome and thyroid problems. as long as you stay on the right path to "natural" health (which is "God's" way) you shall certainly succeed;)

Hi guys
This is not the answer to your problems. I have the same problems and I still don't know the answer but I do know this from experience. Get as far away from any of the faux sugars as you can. Our bodies don't know what to do with them and they mess up everything including metabolism so if you are working out as hard as you can and not loosing weight and your thinking what the..... I only had 800 cal today (which is nothing) and the same for the past week because maybe somehow I am eating way too much with out realizing it????? No... It's the yogurt that only has 60 cal or the vanilla creamer that is only 15 cal for 2 tablespoons over the 25 cal for 1 tablespoon for real cream. You guys I wish I knew you all by name so I could have you believe me and I wish I had the time to write everything I've been through but throw away the splenda. What is your body supposed to do with that. Eat "whole foods" as much as possible. Eat fat. Our body needs fat. Try virgin coconut oil. Read about it first to see if you agree with me that it is natural and great. If you're going to cut down on anything, cut down on cutting out calories. If they are the right calories they burn off fast and our bodies know how to burn them off. Sorry to blab on about this but I wish I could tell people everywhere. I get the stomach still but I will tell you it's half as bad. Truly. I eat bread and rice now and I never did before because of the calories. But those calories are needed to burn other calories etc... Balance out out your meals as much as possible. Again I hope this helps and doesn't come across as preaching. I am no one to preach. Oh sprouted grain bread is so good and flourless (and check the label but usually gluten free), raw nuts (roasted nuts loose so much of the good oils), take care all.

for really bad gas, it helps to sit upside down and sip a carbonated drink. The carbonation helps burp it out.
Also, drastic weight gain around the belly is normal after a meal. Especially so on those with slimmer builds, due to the fact that a large belly is much more obvious on a tieny body.
If you eat well portioned meals for about 2 days, then binge out on dinner the 3rd day, your stomach will strech from the dinner and this may cause your stomach to hurt in the night or lead to an achy feeling in your stomach area.
Sitting on your legs with a straight back will slightly speed digestion and may help your food digest smoother.

Here in India for bloating, gas, stomach distension, the following is normally recommended:
1. Small portions of Papaya at room temperature will help relieve the problem. Papaya is a natural antacid. But do remember very small portions a few times a day, because too much papaya itself can give stomach aches. . Do not drink water for sometime after you have had papaya. Do not have papaya with green leafy salads. About 300 gms of papaya a day should be sufficient. DO NOT OVERDO.
2. A litre (4 glasses) of luke warm water (not hot) first thing in the morning, naturally helps bring out the gas from the stomach.
3. When ever the stomach is distended or there is heart burn drink luke warm water. It gives releif within 15 minutes.

Not to scare anyone but a dear friend who was very thin had the bloated large stomach and it turned out to be ovarian cancer. I would definitely not let it go. You should call your doctor. It is probably some gastro related condition and not anything too serious.
I have bloated fatty tissue in the lower and mid section of my belly. I do not have gas or other symptoms, except that I am very tired and need to sleep. I do have CFS symptoms.
I was told that the swelling is due to my kidneys are overload and cannot handle the impurities. My mom and grandfather both died due to kidney failure. I have also been told that my kidneys are fine - confusing to me of course.
I thought the bloating maybe due to Hormonal imbalance. I just had my blood panel taken to check on this, however I do not get to see the Dr. until June 18. In the meantime, I am trying2keepgoing.
Does anyone have any ideas?

every symtom that has been raised sounds like what i suffer with, if anyone finds out what it is, let me know, as having this more often than not is really frustrating

We all have familiar symptoms but no diagnosis and apparently temporary relief. I did a parasite cleanse and dropped a quick 7 pounds from my mid-section. (also no simple sugars) Bloating returned pretty quickly. So what is the unlined problem. After having polyps removed my doctor said the swelling was not related. I'm going to have my fibroid removed before menapause. It may be due to a thyroid condition or physometira.

I have been having the bloating, gas, direaha, constipation, and stomach cramping for approximately 10 years now. I have been seeing a GI doctor for longer than that. I have been diagnosed with IBS. I have been on every medication that my dr. could think of and not one has worked. I am constantly looking on the internet to see if there is anything new out there that would help. I have to wear large shirts every day just so if or when I eat I can hide my stomach because of the bloating. I look around 7-8 months pregnant. I wake up in the morning with a flat stomach and I can drink water and it will start to swell. It is so depressing and you would think after 10 or so years someone would have come up with something to help us. I am going to be checked for celiac disease or at least try to get my doctor to test me. I would think after this long it would be something he would have brought up. I have tried the lactose free diet, weight watchers, LA weight loss, diet pills, and everything else you could have imagined and to no avail. I have gained weight. I am on adderoll (not for weight loss but for ADD) and can't lose weight. I am the only person that I know of that can't lose weight on adderoll. Now thats sad. Tell me there is nothing wrong with me! Thanks for letting me vent and if anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.
Honestly it sounds to me like celiac disease is a good guess--I didn't think must about it when I first read your post but it sounds precisely like you could be suffering from that. What do you think? Let me know how it goes at the doc's, okay?
For those of menopause age, I have been reading that hormonal imbalance can be a cause of bloating. I am hoping that is the case as I am 53 and have been suffering the same problem for the past few years. I sympathize with the lady who says she looks 7 to 8 months pregnant cause I only look 4 to 5 months and it can be extremely uncomfortable as well as embarassing to a point. My mother who is an emotional vampire type of personality takes joy in pointing out how big my stomach looks almost every time I see her.
Here are a couple of websites that I hope may be able to help some of you with this problem. I have ordered the saliva test kit that tests for several hormonal imbalances but am waiting for the proper time of month to test for it. Of course, the one time I am actually looking forward to my period so I can use this test it is taking forever to get here. I will try to remember to post how the test and treatment works out for me.
An informational website on hormonal imbalances.
The site where I ordered my test kit.

I have this problem and I'm a guy I think somehow it may be related to my diet: I eat oatmeal. It started around the same time, maybe it causes bloating? I am giong to not have oatmeal for a while and see if it gets better.
PS- I eat the oatmeal raw with milk
