I'm a 18 year old female who also has this problem. I have gone thru my share of tears and is very cautious when wearing shorts or bathing suits. I am a cheerleader so the short skirts make it no better. I have been dumped and talked about by an EXboyfriend for these shameful bumps and scars. But I have been applying 100% Natural African Shea Butter to the scars after I shower and it seems to lighten them week after week. I use nutragena deep cleanse cream everytime I shower. I shower in the morning and before I go to bed. Random showers during the day wouldnt hurt. I'm glad to know I'm not suffering with this problem alone and this conversation has helped a lot!

I just came across this website and i'm grateful to know that i'm not alone!! The scars are soooo embarrassing! It is one of the reason I have been single for over a year and a half- I hate when people see the scars and actually had a boyfriend ask me what the "rash" is from....I guess he didn't realize they are horrible purple scars until he asked me but I was incredibly embarrassed. I have tried asking my gyno and she has been NO help. She just tells me that I need to lose weight but even when I was a normal, healthy weight I had boils.  I have lost about 16 pounds in the past few months and (knock on wood) haven't had as many but I do still get them. I had a really bad one about 3 weeks ago and happened to get bronchitis and an ear infection at the same time- I was put on a 5 day antibiotic for my illness (didn't bother mentioning the boil tho) and it did not help the boil at all so I don't really understand why doctors have always told me if I get a really bad one then go in and they will give me an antibiotic. The last time I did research on boils I got terrified b/c one or 2 websites said that if you pop the boil then pus can get into the bloodstream and can cause blood poisoning and you can die. What the heck I can die from this?! It's just frustrating!!!

thanks so much.... your approach makes sense to me and I have started this with my daughter who is only 12 but has had this condition for about a year. How are you doing now?

Thank God for all the information! My girlfriend has struggled with it for years, but could never find relief or any answers! She also has an allergy to sulfates, which means most of the dermatological remedies are not safe for her use. We're going to try some of these suggestions, and hopefully she'll finally feel as beautiful on the outside as I know she already is! Thanks everyone!!

Thank you everyone for being so candid! I am a white female, 36, and have been suffering with this horrible condition  since I was about 20.  I am overweight now, as a result of an injury and infertility treatments, but I had the same symptoms when I was at a normal BMI.  I have some reallllly bad scarring in my groin area.  It is so very embarrassing and painful.  I have been on oral Minocyclin for about 2 years, prescribed by my OBGY since my dermatologist says he doesn't really deal with acne and wouldn't even look at it (after I had finally gotten up the courage to finally show a doctor.  A-hole!) I no longer get the huge boils that were so painful I could barely sit.  I still get tons of blackheads and an occasional zit like thing that clears up in a couple of days instead of growing into a golf ball size boil. I also blow dry the area after showering to make sure it is dry, at least until I start sweating again.  I am a huge perspirer.

I am going to try a couple of things people suggested to get rid of the blackheads.

I was thinking about laser hair removal and tried it on my underarms with moderate success of the destroying the hair follicle. 8 treatments and hundreds of dollars. ( I don't have the condition in my underarms but have extremely sensitive skin that I get a horrible rash if I shave).  So I don't think that is the route for me.

Thanks again to everyone here for sharing and letting people know we are not alone in our misery.

Hidradenitis suppurativa was once thought to be a rare condition because only the most severe cases were reported. However, recent studies have shown that the condition affects about 1 in 100 people when milder cases are also considered. For reasons that are unclear, women are about three times more likely than men to develop the condition.

i'm only 15 and i've been getting these boils on my inner thighs that won't go away, they have been leaving ugly scars with holes. i can't wear shorts because people always see the scars and lumps and always ask. I went to the doctors to see what it was and he said that it was a boil but i've been on google trying to self diagnose and i found that i could also be hidradenitis suppurativa which can't be cured
can someone please help me understand what it is and get rid of the ugly scars.

I've had the same problem for years since I hit puberty. Im about to be 21. Last year (2011) I finally decided to see a doctor about my problem but nothing she gave me worked. She told me that "maybe" I had Hidradenitis Suppurativa, she really wasn't concern on helping me with my problem. So I decided to go see another dermatologist earlier this year. He gave me some antibiotics and also told me to boil natural chamomile (or you can use the chamomile tea bags), let it get cool/warm and soak a towel with it  and put it on the effected areas for about 10-15 minutes. I did some research and it actually helps to kill the bacteria,Staphylococcus, causing this. I also use chamomile bags in my bath. It has helped me tremendously. I haven't had any new ones come out! Chamomile really works. :-D

the guy i have recently been seeing messaged me the other day asking me if i could have possibly given him anything because he has flared up with around 12-15 spots with whiteheads on the inside of his thighs whihc he says are really itchy and sore. he asked me because he noticed that i have what i always assumed was just a shaving rash and that i got the occasional spot which hurt alot. he has got me really worried now so just in case i am going to get checked next week at my local gum clinic. i know it says pretty much everywhere that its not contagious but he says he flared up with them 24hours after e had had sex. i have had sex with him previous to this occasion and nothing has occured and previous partners have had no issues with this.

basically i am asking to find out what you all think of this situation like i said i am going to get checked anyways. i would just like to know if what i have described sounds like hidradenitis suppurativa to put both of our minds at rest.
