I went to my Dr with pain in breast bone, clear to back. I was having to take small rapid breaths because of pain. He gave me steroid pain killer shot into my chest and it has gone. He knew immediately what I had and said it was a cycle, pain , choking , then panic which causes even more constriction. He said most common in women.

From experience that pain has to do with gerd..I have to see a g.i, for it if you ever read the packages or bottles for heartburn treatment that's the explanation they give for that pain.,I thought I had bronchitis without the fever etc.,have to be very careful what you eat and drink . .I hope this helped ..

Ever think to see a rheumatologist? If you are a young male there is a chance you have ankylosing spondylitis.

Costochondritis and tiezes are different. You shouldn't confuse the two. Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage. Tiezes has the same cartilage inflammation but it also causes chest swelling and is very rare.

Since discovering that I have IBS, which is often comorbid with certain anxiety disorders and consequently made to feel a bit like Chicken Little, I have pretty much given up on MD help because it costs too much time and money to be told that my symptoms are linked to psychiatric problems and then to be waved away like a gnat. That said, I have had bone pain in every part of my thorax, and also all down my spine from C5 down on the spinous processes. All the bones feel bruised all the time. Really. All the time, every day. Sometimes muscles and tendons, particularly subscapular and intercostal, will get involved. Usually this makes breathing painful. The higher my stress level and the longer the duration of stress, the higher the pain level as it seems to compound over time. Ergo I have arrived at the conclusion that it is anxiety related, and therefore not interesting enough for an MD to care about. Neither OTC nor Rx touches the pain. My trick is to pretend I am not in constant pain, and my mantra is a long, breathy recitation of the word, "whatever." It helps some.

I have fibromyalgia and have had this kind of pain which my dr. diagnosed as costochondritis. He said it is often caused by fibromyalgia. He also told me what your doctor told you: rest , heat and ibuprofen. The last time I had it it was the most painful thing.and the ibuprofen did not do much to alleviate the pain. It seemed like I just had to wear it out.
