I broke 3 of the metatarsals in my foot, and had 4 screws, a plate, and a pin (which stuck out the bottom of my foot) put in. I am very squeamish and was dreading the pin removal greatly. I thought it was painful, but I was already really upset. It really only hurt for a few seconds. Now I am so relieved to have it out!

I had my toe reconstructed after a dancing accident and now have a k wire coming through the top of it, ive had it in for 6 long and painful weeks and am having it removed on wednesday (7th oct) ive been trying to find out some info on how they will take it out and have run up a blank except this thread.... do they just pull it straigh out? I am a little worried as the pin goes into the middle of my foot and it seems for a long way for it to be just pulled out with such ease. I do hope its as easy as youve all said... thanks for the info and i hope your all feeling alot better.

Hi,

I had a bunionectomy with k-wire 13 days ago. It does not bother me at all. At my one week post-op check up, the doc turned and twisted it a bit and it still did not hurt. I have good padding between the wire an my foot and I really do not feel it. So relax. You will be fine.

Yes I broke four of my metatarsals in my left foot and I have three K-wires sticking out that I have to keep in for six weeks. It was fine while there was padding between the wires that that sticking out of my foot but at three weeks the doctor took them out and it has hurt like hell ever since. Three weeks to go though and the wires get taken out. I am dreading it but my doctor described it as 'uncomfortable but not particularly painful'... I don't know : S

I have had all my toes straightened (hammertoes) over the course of 4 operations throughtout my life. All but one had wire sticking out. The first time I was petrified about having the wire out. I'm currently 2 weeks post op after having the last lot done and I am not worried (even the slightest) about the wires coming out because it has never hurt - not even a bit. I was astounded the first time!

I once even stubbed my second toe once whilst the wire was in. At that time they did not bend the end over, so the wire got knocked even further into my toe - I was shocked , but yet it did not hurt. Honestly!

Now, I wouldn't recommend stubbing your toe! And it took a little longer for the chap to get purchase on the end of the wire to enable him to pull it out (after the prescribed time) - but still, there was absolutely no pain.

The worst thing is the itching of the dried skin around the wound and even under the bandages where the skin dries out due to the lack of air and bathing.

My feet looks horrible when they first emerge from the bandages... until I get all the crud off by bathing and moisturising.

I have had about 20 operations in my life and this one is by far the easiest.

For those of you still worried - I cope with the worry in my life by saying (out loud) ... "This time tomorrow/ next week/ next month it will all be over, and in a year I will have forgotten. I can't do anything about it now - it is going to happen. No amount of worry will change the future... so hope for the best possible outcome and stop wasting time, energy and your life."

I'm just looking forward to wearing sandals without being self conscious about my ugly toes - once any swelling subsides and the scars fade of course!

Good luck to all of you who are undergoing this surgery... and STOP worrying! :-)

I had the bunionectomy with a screw which I now intend having removed. However when I had several of my toes shortened about 20 years ago I also had pins sticking out the front. They were simply pulled out without any real pain, the anxiety about the removal was worse! Best would be to discuss this with your orthopaedic surgeon, Good luck if it has not been done yet!

I have a K wire sticking out of my 2nd toe and I am in a walking shoe. To protect it, my husband cut a soda bottle in half and fit it to my foot so that the top of my toes are protected. He cut the top of the bottle off so that there was a small hole and made several small poke holes for air. There are to holes to put a shoelace on to tie around the back of my foot to keep it on. You can also use a rectangular cranberry juice bottle. It is genius. My dogs can't step on it and I can't bang it. I had a plantar plate and a hammertoe repair about 4 weeks ago. My incision still hurts alot.
