Hello! A close relative of mine recently gave me a jar of umeboshi plums. They look very tasteful and my children cannot wait to try them since all my family likes to try new things all the time. Yet, I must try everything before I give it to my children and so I had to try the umeboshi plums too. I found them tasting quite sour and salty. I started wondering can children eat umeboshi plums? Are they maybe too salty and acid for their stomachs?

Hi! I must tell you that I think you made a cardinal mistake when you tried the umeboshi plum straight from the jar. The umeboshi plums are pickled in very high amount of salt so that they can last for 20 years or more if the pickling process is done properly. So, you are not supposed to eat them like that. Japanese people cook them with rice or fish. The rice or the fish take out some salt from the umeboshi plums and the plums give them a specific kind of taste. It is a perfect combination, and your children can feel free to try it too.

Hi! I would just like to add that I have heard of some sweets made from umeboshi plums. Although I am not sure where you can buy those sweets. They are, as any sweets, made for children, and therefore it is an additional proof that you can give the umeboshi plums to your children without any fear. I think, though, that chances of them liking the umeboshi plums are really low, since our children are not used to this kind of tastes.
