Today in choir class I passed out and they tried to say that I locked my knees but they were not locked ..... What happened was I felt really dizzy and my eyes started to go black then I got really hot and I just passed out ..... It may be because I did not eat or drink or eat anything all day what do you think the reason is???

Hi, if you hadn't eaten all day it would be more likely down to low blood sugar as to why you passed out.

The human body is a very efficient machine. It uses the heart muscles and arterial muscles to circulate oxygen and nutrients to all areas of the body continuously for normal cellular resperation and the viens carry the metabolic waste including CO2 to their final destination for excretion and exhalation. Under normal circumstances your body does not lay completely still, your muscles in the extremeties constantly contract and this contraction pushes the blood in the viens and the excess ectasticial fluids in the lymph system, lost from the circulatory system, back to the heart for the continual movement. The more oxygen and nutrients required, the more muscle contration that aids the return. When standing erect with your knees locked, you are aiding muscles of the legs and hips from becoming fatigued. However, it also inhibits the muscular contraction needed to insure healthy respiration on the cellular level. The blood begins to pool or collect in interstitial fluid and the body begins to adjust to the issue causing the movement out of homeostasis, or normal function. What actually triggers the passing out or falling out of consciousness is not clearly understood yet. Scientists believe that it is how the human body insures that it will flatten to a prone or supine position...or flat. Left unattended the person will lay and jerk around slightly until regaining consciousness. With no perminant side effects.

Yes 100%. I was at a concert and was standing with my knees locked and passed out in front of a few hundred. Don’t ever lock your knees

You are correct I learned this in Histology this semester. The blood pressure in the venous system is a lot lower than it is in the arterial system and thus needs assistance in getting back to the heart. One mechanism that helps it is that action of moving. Like you said, basically when you move the skeletal muscles contract and press up against nearby veins thus pushing the blood up towards the heart; passing a series of valves that keep it from falling back down. There are other similar reasons as well but this is the main reason that many people pass out when standing still and locking there knees.

You just have to work through it. I'm having the same problem, I passed out and fell 4 feet through the risers last year, and now I have to go perform at the same place again and I'm scared it's going to happen. But you just need to work through it.

this would NOT happen in several minutes as the original statement suggests. At least this is what I've learned as a physical therapist.

My girlfriend tried this and she got weak and shaky after about 15 minutes but she didn't actually pass out. She unlocked her knees when she started seeing colors and after a few minutes of being weak she was back to normal.
