I have had my gallbladder removed in May 2012.  I was told I can and also can not drink alcohol now.  Which is correct?  Please respond.

Hello,

I don't see any reason why you can drink alcohol as long as it isn't to excess.  Your gallbladder  stores bile made by the liver which which is used to break down fats and emulsify them so they can be absorbed by the small intestine.  At this point you need to worry about taking fats in your diet because you can't digest them very well which will create a fatty stool. What you might do is to drink some alcohol in various forms like beer, wine and liquor and see if that causes any digestion problems for you.  Experiement with this.  A question I might ask is are you taking any mediction because of gallbladder removal or any other medications that alcohol would interfere with.  If so, then, I'd have to say no alcohol.  Otherwise, you look good to go with alcohol.
