Clearing of throat as if something in there thread.

OMG, I HAVE the same problem for about the last 4 months. It is driving me crazy and my throat sometimes feels like it is closing up. Does anyone have any soluations to help make it go away.
I am driving my coworkers crazy as well as my self.
I never have any mucus or anything coming up, but I get feelings that some sort of liquid is coming up, but it never comes up far enough to spit it out, so I then have to swallow and it seems it gets stuck again in the throat and windpipe.
Sometimes I get a throat clearing session that last for hours and it's mental torment and unbearable. But sometimes I can go hours without feeling anything in my thoat.
Doctors have no idea what's causing it. I have tried Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) medication which made no difference at all.
This is destroying my life, it's horrible and driving me crazy having to constantly try to release something from my throat/windpipe which seems to get stuck like glue.
What can I do????
I began using Slippery Elm Bark and I think it's helped a lot.
Take some 20 minutes before every meal.
Finally I found a doctor who gave me hope.....instead of saying "ACID REFLUX Or POST NASAL DRIP" She said something really surprising to me....she said that all of my symptoms fit the description of someone with a thyroid issue. So I am waiting for the results and will re post if I get any answers:)
thanks
I just finished med-school and during the (silent) tests, people would comment on me constantly clearing my throat, while I didn't even notice! Also, my 4 year old will clear his throat (being just like me) and that's when I realized I need to get over this!
After reading every post here is what it seems could be a number of things:
1) MSG - MSG makes sense to me because my symptoms got worse after I did a protein/weight gain diet. Protein bars and drinks are nothing but MSG...and MSG is literally in everything, so it is likely all of us who have these symptoms are eating MSG. Is there anyone who has banned MSG from their diet and still experiencing symptoms?
2) Dairy - Dairy has long been known to affect phlegm/mucus...it is also so common that we all could be having it. Is there anyone who has banned dairy from their diet and still experiencing symptoms?
3) GERD - I have never experienced heartburn or all the other symptoms that I learned about in school. Combine that with the fact that everyone here who was put on medication didn't have a change in symptoms. It is safe to say that GERD is NOT the issue.
4) Candida - There is a good possibility this is it! Women get candida much more often (which wouldn't make sense why I would have it) but I read a lot of Dr. Russell Blaylock (he was a brain surgeon for 25 years, and now focuses on nutrition), he said men can get candida from oral sex...doh! He says about candida, to avoid sugar because yeast feed on sugar, also avoid fermented foods. Take supplements that fight fungi like beta-1,3/1,6 glucan and arabinoglalactan. Green tea, curcumin and quercetin, resveratrol and hesperidin also inhibit fungal growth. I really would like feedback on if more people cleansed themselves with candida and what effect that had.
Other things to try could be Neti-Pot (there have been reports of deaths from a brain eating amoeba so I would boil water for a minute and left to cool).
Others have found success with Digestive enzymes, and HCL.
I have found success by breathing through my mouth and swallowing until the urge to clear my throat subsides (someone else brought up how that helped them), and maybe I'll always have to carry around a water bottle and get a drink when it gets really bad.
Please let me know if anything works for you!
And I feel your pain!!!
Do you still have the coughing and clearing of your throat?
I had gotten cold/flu like symptoms in November/December 2011 and have had a cough that has escalated since. I have been on two antibiotics, which seem to help for a while and a chest xray (nothing showed up). I have also had asthma and all of the allergy tests with some allergies but nothing serious, had seen an ear, nose and throat dr. that did a CAT scan on my sinuses but nothing & no drainage and I will be going in for an endoscopy on 6/18/12. Symptoms worsen after meals but sometimes with no food or drink and at night I swallow and clear my throat for an hour or two before going to sleep.I have type 1 diabetes and take thyroid and cholesterol meds. I have also tried allergy meds, prilosec and nexium and seems to work to a while but then the coughing and clearing the throat comes back. I am now researching into Candida symptoms since reading these posts.
Hi Everyone,
I am a female and I have had throat clearing issues for several years now and I just turned 40. I believe this issue is due to eating too much sugar, fried an processed foods and a lack of exercise, fresh air and sunshine. I read an article about something called Candida, which I foud out is a yeast that grows within all of our bodies. However, when we are unhealthy, the Candida can get out of control and cause a lot of health issues. I found this article extremely helpful and interesting. I temporarly tried the Candida diet, which was hard for me because I love to eat anything I want. However, I notice that when I cut out sugar, exercise and eat only fresh vegetables and fruits, I am able to sleep better without a lot of coughing. I definitely don't believe that this throat clearing issue is in anyone's "mind" like some doctor's, who do not have this issue, believe. The reason I don't believe this is because there are times when I do not cough, if I follow a strict diet or at times, if I take sudafed. I am still "work in progress" because I have trouble sticking to a healthy lifestyle because I have a busy work schedule and if I have any stress, I tend to eat less healthy. I also found out that, Alcohol is very bad, which I know is common sense but it definitely has to be cut out of you diet completely. Basically, the key is to stick to a strict Candida diet, exercise, and then in about 6 months to 1 year, you can go back to OCCASIONALLY having a glass of wine or something with sugar. But, the key is MODERATION! I cannot stress this enough because if you go back to your old habits, the cough WILL return. I really hope this helps!
8 years, and it drives me nuts. Like you, I pray there is a cure soon!
