Please explain me what is a procedure called coloscopy done for? Is it regular part of gyn exam? I’m 15 years old and have never been at the gyn’s. Is this procedure painful? I have to make my first routine exam and it includes coloscopy, as I have heard from my friends. As they either still have not done it, we know nothing about how it is going to look.

Colposcopy is painless procedure; it is a part of routine exam. Colposcopy is visual examination of cervix that is done by tool called colposcope, electric microscope that is positioned about 30 cm from vagina. Some changes in tissue and blood vessels are visible this way. If there is an abnormality in cells of cervix, sample of tissue is taken for the evaluation. It is absolutely normal physical exam and you should never be uncomfortable at the gyn’s.
