Can't wait till this is over - I keep thinking in 2 weeks I will be fine and looking back on this as though it was nothing.... hopefully.
Its good to know there are people out there also going through the same thing!
day one- painful but the effects of the anesthesia are still there so its about a level 3 on the scale from one to ten i guzzle water like its my job and i discover the awesomeness of KFC mash potatos they are very smooth and go down easy. wait 20 minutes after taking your pain killers to eat. It is so important to eat EVERYDAY even if its small it will keep you from throwing up. I havent at ALL.
skip to day three the pain is now at about a level four and a half but as long as i take my meds on time i'm okay. also some pharmacys carry lollipops that you can suck on and they numb your throat more than your pain killers. look into this especially if you have kids just make sure they dont suck down the whole thing you dont need a lot to get numb and it lasts long enough to eat and guzzle a c**p ton of water.
skip to days five and six. First the HUGE scab on my left side comes out due to a whole lot of salt water gargling two tsps of salt to one measuring cup of water. these scabs taste like throw up because yes, your food gets stuck in there no matter how much you gargle. try not to gag. this was hard for me because when my right side decided to fall it decided to hang on by a little bit and was hitting my uvula every time i swallowed it went halfway down my throat. I hope no one ever experiences that its just nasty. the pain sucks its around a 7 by far the worst you will feel but it only lasts about 12 hours then a mini scab forms and you're okayish again
days 7 through 8 pain is back down to 3 and actually during the day around a 2 the mini scab makes it painful when you eat so stick to soft foods even though if you're like me at this point you'd kill for a burger. keep taking your pain meds ESPECIALLY right before you go to bed and AS SOON as you wake up
days 9 and 10 I ate chicken! and a sandwhich i had to get a refill of pain meds but instead of perciset they give me loratabs and tell me its time to start slowly cutting back which i have already been doing. I am a hairdresser and i felt good enough to put on my make-up do my hair and cut and color two people. I talked on the phone for almost two hours which admittedly left me sore but about two steps from that light at the end of the tunnel. OH and my mini scab is mostly gone and that scab doesnt hurt AT ALL when it comes off as long as you STAY HYDRATED!
I hope you all really consider this and i hope you do it at a young age the younger the better! good luck and i will make sure to check back in case anyone has any questions
Day 4 -5 worst pain ever, you didn't want to eat but made yourself! good for the healing process. and the nausea gets you.
I felt great 6-9 days was able to take short outings with mum, eating great, soft foods of course. Scabs fell off around 6-8 days, i ate whole spoon-fulls of manuka honey which helped so much with the stinging.
Day 10 thought i was out of the woods, but as an adult you may feel better, but you can bleed out anywhere upto 14 days yes thats right. So day 10 i wake up and spit up blood and it keeps coming. Not fun at all and scary. So back to the hospital two nights there nil by mouth, and lucky they didn't have to re-operate. Now if this happens to any of you, as hard as it is to not panic, put ice cubes in your mouth, it took about 1 hr with ice to reduce the bleeding and then two days of observation at the hospital. So i went in on sat 2nd oct out mid day mon 4th, now its sunday 10th, it has been a full on week, not very painful but the healing did take a back step, scabs still there and infected, so fun times with antibiotics. Still a risk of bleeding 2 1/2 weeks on so i recommend that if you are an adult to take 3 weeks off work and don't over do things and rush back.
I am still positive thou and to recommend the operation as it worth it in the long run. My very good mate had hers done this time last year who is 28yrs. She hasn't been sick since. (and crazy enough she bleed out day 10 too). Doctors say it is very common in adults. Takecare everyone and my thoughts are with you thru this time.
Mynhusband is 29 hes oing to have his tonsils removed in 2 days how bad is the pain and can u talk right after.what should we expect.
I am 18 and I had my tonsils out on April 1st..... I ended up needing to stay in the hospital for 2 nights due to my lungs (I have severe asthma). The day I got discharged I had two Doctor appts. which was way overdoing it. I did not know it at the time but I really paid for it the next few days ): The next day I ended up back in the ER because my lung collapsed and I had gotten pneumonia (don't lay around too much!) I layed around a little and alternated Roxicet and advil every 3 hours for the pain. I ended up babysitting Friday and Saturday which was again way overdoing it! On Saturday an Sunday my pain REALLY intensified )))): I called my ENT dr who said that days 7-10 after surgery are the worst because that is when the scabs form and come off. I have found that the things that have been helpful for me is the prescription i got for Lidocane it really helps to numb my mouth, gargling with salt water at least once an hour and REALLY staying on top of the pain medication (don't miss a dose for the first 2 weeks even if u r not in pain otherwise the pain comes back way worse!) Also sucking on Jolly Ranchers, drinking Water and apple juice and eating popsicles seems to help. The popsicles seemed to kind of numb my throat which was kind of nice. I hope that these suggestions will at least help a few people and good luck with your surgery and recovery!!!!!
STAY HYDRATED!!!!!!!!
I had my tonsils out last week. I had arrived at the hospital at around 7 am. By the time everything was finished we were out at 4 pm. The recovery was hard for me. MUST READ
I am 18 years old and was diagnosed with tonsillitis on September 5th and was prescribed with rounds of antibiotics and steroids however the symptoms were recurring. For months, I was in and out of doctor’s offices and the ER with excruciating pain. The disease would not subside. Finally, I made an appointment with the ENT who said my condition was chronic and that I needed my tonsils and adenoids out.
Since I am in college, I had to wait until my break to schedule my surgery. I suffered through my entire first semester of college and was miserable. My surgery was on December 20th and it went really well. I was the first case so I was in at 6:30 and out by 11:30. The surgery lasted roughly a half hour; my tonsils were dissected the classic way and my adenoids were lasered off. I woke up in the recovery room two hours later and was monitored by the nurses for some time before I was allowed to go home. I felt very comfortable because my mom is an RN in the one-day surgery department so I am very familiar with the hospital setting and I knew all the nurses working with me.
Everything was going well until I got home and the Novocain wore off. I was in a tremendous amount of pain and the liquid Hydrocodone that was prescribed to me burned my throat as I swallowed. The little bit of toothpaste that I accidentally swallowed while brushing my teeth burned as well but it is important to brush three times a day because my mouth reeked and I didn’t want bacteria to cause an infection. I was too scared to eat anything today and too drowsy from the anesthesia, however I did not puke and that was one of my main concerns.
The second day was much like the first day; lots of pain, lots of drinking water and lots of spontaneous naps, except I was able to eat popsicles and swallow room temperature chicken broth. I took a peek in the back of my throat and gagged at the site of the white scabs. I refused to take the Hydrocodone after reading horror stories on other blogs so my mom bought liquid acetaminophen which worked better in my opinion. I was taking infants bubble gum flavored Tylenol. It tasted great, went down well and worked almost instantly. However, my uvula and tongue were extremely swollen. My uvula swelled in the shape of a rectangular tag that sat on the back of my tongue. I was forced to sleep on a recliner for the first 5 nights to prevent choking. My mother called in for a tapered dose prescription of prednisone which decreased the swelling of my tongue and uvula. I crushed up the pills and mixed it in with sherbert which I found went down easily. Day three was a good day as for pain goes, I think the humidifier that my parents bought me was beneficial even though they said it was bogus. I used it on the medium setting and kept it on my table while I slept. It definitely helped and made my throat less dry in the morning when I woke up. When I woke up in the middle of the night I drank sips of water to ensure proper hydration. I ate a lot of cold pudding and sherbert today and I rested up as the next day was Christmas Eve and my family and I had plans to go out. It was complete torture watching my Italian family eat a feast of Christmas Eve delicacies while I was sipping soup at the dinner table. I felt adventurous during dinner and had a ½ dime sized piece of a meatball and it got lodged in my throat…that was not fun. I shouldn’t be complaining because I was able to lick the frosting off a few cookies. Christmas Day aka day 5 was terrible. I was exhausted and the pain was outrageous. I was thankful that the holiday was at our house so I was able to sleep throughout the day.
It wasn’t until a week after surgery until I got over the hump. I was finally able to eat things other than popsicles, broth with pastina, sherbert and pudding, my voice was slowly but surely coming back and I finally passed a BM. My parents, on a whim, made reservations at a hotel in a city a few hours away to watch a hockey tournament and to just get out of the house. Cabin fever is a real thing!!!!! Before we hit the road, my mom took me to see the APRN at the ENT practice just to check my condition. She explained that my tongue and uvula were edemous because I was intubated during the surgery and that caused irritation. My tonsils were 3.5 centimeters each and said the enormous size of them is the reason why my recovery would be longer than average. After the appointment I begged my mom to take me to McDonalds because I was craving real food. I ordered a milkshake and a 4 piece. I ate the milkshake with a spoon because straws cause too much suction and can irritate the throat and the scabs. I was able to eat 2 mcnuggets; very small bites and lots of chewing was involved. It took me FOREVER to eat just the two of them but it satisfied my craving and held me over. I was so hungry, the pizza hut commercials on TV made my mouth water. When my family arrived at the destination, I was able to eat hash browns from Dunkin Donuts and I ordered macaroni and cheese off the kid’s menu at the restaurant we ate at and oh my gosh, it was delectable. I’m pretty sure you could have fed me dog food and I would have loved it. I wasn’t able to eat all of it which was upsetting but I was just so happy to be off the recliner and eating something other than broth for dinner. The next day I enjoyed ice cream and chicken soup in a bread bowl from Panera. Once again, it took me forever to finish my meal and I had to endure my family staring at me wondering when I’d be done eating during the entire course of my meal. The bread bowl was great because the inside of the bowl was very soft and easy to eat and the carbs filled me up. I was in heaven. Day 8 and 9 were similar; tolerable yet boring.
Today is day 10. My voice is still raspy, still hurts to laugh and yawn but I am finally regaining my strength. I haven’t taken Tylenol since yesterday morning and I am sleeping through the entire night. I lost about 10 pounds, weighing 115 pre op and weighing about 105 currently. I also don’t fit into my jeans haha. I’m hoping I can resume my regular diet soon. I already have plans to eat at Chili’s, Friendly’s and Buffalo Wild Wing’s with my friends when I am 100% healed. I’ve also been in the mood for pizza. I took some time out of the day to wash and exfoliate my face, tweeze my eyebrows, and whiten my teeth; it made me feel amazing. Although I am not completely healed, having an open mind helped me through the recovery. I didn’t think this surgery would have such a long and complicated recovery but I beared through it. Every day I felt better and the surgery is going to benefit my health for the rest of my life. Just think no more strep throat and no more tonsillitis! Ice water, Netflix and Tylenol were also key factors. Sleep is extremely important. Sleep upright and/or propped up on some pillows if possible and rest during the day. Be sure to shower every day, even if you don’t think you have to, do it. You’ll feel like a new person and the steam definitely helps lubricate the throat. Another instruction I lived by is if your urine is yellow, you aren’t drinking enough water. Even if it hurts to swallow water, you must, it’s only going to help you in the end. If you can survive a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, you can survive anything. I hope anyone who has to go through this extensive surgery has a speedy recovery!
