I've had the same problem since about 1998. My parents brought me to a few doctors and their diagnosis was Recurring Upper Respiratory infection. Basically a non-contagious chronic cold. Cold and sinus medicine help when it's bad but I've pretty much learned to live with it.

I know what this is and what causes it and how to deal with it. I am a 37 year old male.
I started suffering with thick clear mucus in my throat a couple of years ago. Constant coughing, throat clearing. Basically all the symptoms described here. It really started to ruin my life and get me seriously depressed.

Anyhow, I had Septoplasty to straighten my deviated symptom. This did not get rid of the mucus, but it has helped me breathe through my nose. I have taken various anti-biotics etc etc. still no joy.

A barium swallow revealed chronic acid reflux. I then had an endoscopy - where they shove a tube down your throat into your stomach. It was a horrible experience but it confirmed that I have chronic reflux and a particular condition called laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Now, this is pretty much incurable. There is surgery but it isn't guaranteed to work and there are complications. So I have dealt with it in 2 ways.

Firstly, I have cut beer and all spicy foods out of my diet. Orange juice, dark chocolate, curries, white wine. ALL OUT COMPLETELY. Absolutely no smoking ( Even the occasional joint sets it right off ) no other drugs nothing at all.

My diet is now pretty bland. Toast and marmite , cereal, bannanas, apples in the morning. A nice big salad for lunch ( I eat tomatoes and peppers as these dont set it off to much ) but no cucumber and absolutely no raw onion (cooked is ok ) meat and fish is fine. Evening meals are mainly pasta and salads again. Big roast dinners and fry ups are also ok. You need to work out what is good for you.

I only drink red wine and whiskey now. I love drinking so can't stop completely, but these don't seem to set me off anywhere near as bad as beer and white wine.

Secondly, I have become exceedingly fit. I cycle to work and back 5 days a week. Go for a swim before work 4-5 times a week. I also ride for a club and go on 100K+ rides many weekends.

This especially has made all the difference. Some days the mucus is barely noticeable. Other days though, after a heavy drinking binge, its bad. So needless to say, I drink far less now than I used to.

I really hope the info I have given here helps others to learn how to deal with it and not let it ruin your life. You just need to make adjustments to the way you live

Cheers

Hi

I was looking up information about thick mucus as it seems what I have at the moment. Its always up my nose in the back of my throat and has the consistency of rubber cement. I also have a ton of other health issues but I think I finally came across with whats wrong with me and I thought i'd share it with you seeing as we are in the same boat of where doctors do not know what the hell is going on with us

It turns out that I have a lot of silver fillings in my teeth uptop and a bridge that are made of amalgam. This amalgam metal is made of 50 percent random metals and 50 percent mercury, mercury is about one of the most toxic substances to the human body i found out, then I'm thinking what the hell are these doing in my body. As a kid i always suffered from a sore throat and blisters on my tongue and stomach problems. Today i suffer from all those symptoms, thick mucus, burning mouth, dry eyes, cronic cough, stiff muscles and a bunch of other c**p.

Well what i plan to do is drastic and expensive but i plan to get all that metal taken out of my mouth and replaced with ceramics in hopes that this will solve all my problems. To me it makes perfect sense that this would cause my body harm even if the doctors don't think so. Even the ADA says amalgam is safe, but then i think what kind of lawsuits would get thrown around if they didn't say that. However they do confess that some people may be allergic to these metals so thats another sign there that this might be causing these allergic type reactions.

Well i hope this posting helps, perhaps it is something to consider if you have amalgam in your mouth as well.

I've had the problem for about three years. I'm in my late 20s and am a classical singer. Since the problems began, they've hindered my singing and my once-steadily-rising career. The whole process has been incredible frustrating--knowing what you're capable of and being unable to express yourself.

I've visited three ENTs, the last of which finally deciding to give me a CT scan. It revealed that I have a large pus filled sinus infection in my right maxillary sinus. He said that he was 90% sure that it was the problem, that the pus and mucus was dripping onto my cords and any swelling that was a result of allergies (also highly allergic), would be increased ten-fold by the infection. He also said that infections like these have lasted for years in a person's sinus, without them even knowing about it.

He prescribed Levaquin, which I have finished, but to no avail.
I've also been on a Zpack, Augmentin, and Avelox, all of which had zero effect.

To combat the allergies, I've taken:
Allegra
Claritin
Claranex
Singulair
Zyrtec
Xyzal
Benedryl
...and a number of other OTCs that I can't remember...

I've also been on Nexium and Prilosec. No help.

I've visited allergists who have given me:
Nasonex (Currently trying...)
Nasocort
Flonase
Veramyst
Omnaris
Patanese
Astelin (works ok...)
Astepro

I've visited an acupuncturist several times to try the NAET technique--nothing.

I use my neti pot everyday and just yesterday bought a Grossen Hydro Pulse Nasal Irrigator. I've heard good things about it and am willing to try anything before surgery.

I just miss singing. I need to be back on the ball but this this mucus (and maybe pus) has caused sinus swelling as well as vocal cord swelling. Can't be swollen and sing at the same time--at least not for very long...

Does anyone have ANYTHING to suggest? I'm at the end of my rope. My parents are sick of hearing about it. I've grown distant from my friends because of my depression. And I've had one breakdown.

I just wish I could knock this out so I can get back in the game...

I can relate to nearly everything people have posted about this 'constant clearing of throat' - I'm going back to my Dr next week as the prednisone, augmentin duo forte & nasonex spray have not worked. I was getting relief from (self medicating) by taking two phernergan tablets with two nurofen plus tablets of an evening before bed. The phernergan dries the secretions & the nurofen plus soothed my sore throat, I tend to aggressively clear in frustration. I hoping to see an ENT. I want to know if anyone with this problem still have their tonsils (insitu)? - I'm thinking if I had my tonsils removed would that give me relief...

I have read most of the comments on here. Im glad too see I am not the only one with this problem (mucus in throat). It does sadden me that there is nothing we can do to get rid of it. I do hope & pray that someone finds a cure for this. I have had this for a few years, I cant remember when it started. All I know it is very embarrassing having to clear my throat so often, it evens wakes my partner up in the morning.

I have had mucus that just works its way up (like a cat's furball- i guess) on a daily basis. I also lost my voice completely after being hoarse for months. I too feel like I am going to choke. It's a constant bother. I always feel like I have gunk logged in my throat! I have seen doctors and a specialist. No answers! I have been on antibiotics going on 6 months. An answer would be a blessing.

Hello, everyone who has constant mucous in their throat. I just wanted to pass on a peice of information a lot of people tend to miss including doctors. I have had the same problem along with one of my best friends for the past year. We found out it could actually be from food allergies and act extremely similar to seasonal allergies. The most common two are lactose and gluten. Gluten allergies are actually getting a lot more popular than doctors realized. We were told to go on a gluten and lactose free diet for 6 weeks to see if it helps. My friend started two weeks before me and she says her allergies are much much better. I started a little over a week ago and I already feel better. And I tried everything too. symptoms can also consist of stomach issues. If you are worried about finding gluten free and lactose free foods it is actually very easy. Vitamin Cottage, Whole foods and King Soopers all have these foods and they even provide lists of everything that qualifies in the store. Restaraunts are even finding out how much people actually have serious gluten allergies and can provide you with a special menu. Mimis Cafe is one. Its difficult at first but I promise if this is the problem you will feel so much better! Hope I helped : )

Interesting to see that I'm not the only person suffering from thick, clear throat and chest mucus...

Starting around August of 07 my throat became mucusy and it hasn't gone away since. It's been nearly a year now.

I've never had allergies, I'm rarely ever sick, I'm very active and in good shape. I'm at a loss as to why my throat has been this way constantly since 8/07.

Chem-trails? Haha...

Yhe first thing to do is change your diet. Certain foods build mucus so try and cut back or eliminate some of these foods. The next step is drink water first thing in the morning when you wake up even before brushing your teeth 700 ml. of water

You then have breakfast after 45 minutes

Never drink anything cold with your meals drink tea or hot water

you can drink cold water 2 hours after a meal

using this method you should see a decrease or elimination of mucus build up at the back of the throat

I am a 20 year old female and have dealt with excess mucus in my throat/choking feeling for a year and a half, getting progressively more inhibiting. Initially dismissed it as nothing, and waited about six months before looking into it, and attributing it to birth control pills. Then considered a candida overgrowth: treatment did nothing except taste bad. Was tested for thyroid problem etc. (my mother had her thyroid removed), I am now wondering if I should look into further testing in that direction as I used to have a lot of trouble gaining weight. After reading about just how long this has lasted in some of you I am getting pretty worried...So glad to have found this thread- I read on a previous page about someone convinced it was HIV, can relate to that scare...
I too get that feeling when swallowing pills that it just won't go down. I feel like the mucous is coming up, though, not a nasal drip. I have never had sinus issues/asthma/allergies/lung problems. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that coughing up mucous several times an hour for over a year is not a normal teenage thing. Now I am moving from Canada to the United States for school in three weeks and am unsure of how to go about health care, since I am still being covered by OHIP. Need to solve this so I don't creep out my roommate

Got the Neti Pot, about 30 minutes after doing it in the AM it worked and I stayed clear. As soon as I ate dinner, it was back. Will try the Pot again tomorrow. Also, when I workout/run/etc... it is at its worse. Anybody have this too? Might be asthma related?
