Hi everyone,

Original poster here,  wanted to give another update.  I quit smoking about two years ago.  I have also visited a rhuematologist who prescribed sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine, and even methotrexate.  I still have not seen a great improvement. I don't get flare ups as bad anymore but my upper lip is still visibly swollen.  I have also eliminated all benzoates from my diet and I only eat home prepared meals.  I have no choice but to narrow it down to possible dental work (contact dermatitis) or maybe a non responsive form of oro-facial granulomatosis.

Hi everyone, I have had this problem for 3 years - a permanently swollen upper lip. It responds to cortizone but I cant keep using it. I dont smoke. Originally it was thought to be oro-facial Crohns but tests rules that out. Like the original poster it can get worse with oversleep, and I think with stress - no one seems to know though - however it seemed to started after dental work and there is a possibility it is a reaction to fillings - has anyone else ever heard this? Do keep this thread going if anyone figures anything out.

Hi, glad to see you still update time to time yrs later. I had dental work a month ago, and my teeth still kinda hurt. Also been getting headaches. Anyway a week after the dental work I woke up with a swollen upper lip on the left side. Felt like a ball in my lip. I took a generic benadryl. Kinda helped it go down a tiny bit. Only thing I could think of that I ate the day before was flower seeds that may have cause it. But I've never has problems with them before. Then last.night it happened again, this time while watching tv. My lip felt fat like when they numb your mouth at dentist so I touched it and was swolled again in same exact spot. I had eaten an icecream cone with nuts earlier, but ate one the day before with no problems. Took another benadryl and it helped a tad bit. Woke up today and its gone. I'm really starting to wonder if it has something to do with dental work. This happen to me a few times 11 yrs ago when I was 20. Happen a couple times in one month, then another 2 times I woke up with a swollen face. And I think this was all around the same time I had a root canal. This really has me worried its infection or something from the dentist. I found out the dental office I went to is nasty and some people end up having.to get teeth pulled after going there. I know when I had the root canal 11 yrs ago I ended up with an infection that time but got it.treated right away. This time I don't have insurance and just got this work done a couple days before I lost my insurance.

hi,

I have the same symptoms, I saw a doctor who prescribed a dexamethasone which is a steroid. The lip swelling reduced to normal but after 10 days it swelled again. I took another dose of dexamethasone it went down but swelled again after 4 days. Did you find a solution? please share. I have also had a lot of dental work on my teeth.

Hi,

My nane is Mark and I am 34 years old and since April 12,2013 I woke up around 10 am and my lips were swollen 3 to 4 times their normal size. I have been to 2 dentist and 2 oral pathologists, 1 immunologist and now I have an appt. with a rhumatologist next week.

The Allergist I've also seen, said I had angioedemia so I quit taking all my meds except Clonipin. I been on Clonipin for 5 years and I really don't wan't to go through withdrawl if that's not the problem.

My dentist pulled my bottom teeth because he said they were abcessed. Now I have to pay a ton of money for implants. But I need to figure out the main problem first, my giant lips!

I tried antihistamines, benedryl, and 6 different antibiotics and they dont work. Like you when I over-sleep it gets really bad. I noticed in the morning they are bigger and as the day goes on they get a little smaller.

Please if anyone can help me I would be very greatful. I am at the end of my rope.

Thank You.

Hi all,

i think i may have found a solution! my bottom lip was swollen for about six months. i have noticed that when i drink a lot of water it does not swell that much. I never used to be a water drinker. Now i take at least 6 glasses a day and my problem has reduced significantly. i dont know what the connection with ater is ... maybe it is a way of detoxifying. Please all of you who are suffering try drinking lots of water. When i wake up in the morning, first thing i do is drink a glass of water and before i get out of the house i take another and continue through out the day. Please try it ! it has worked for me!

allergic reactions to dental products or procedures might be a good place to start looking for cause. have had swollen lip reaction to the liner material used on my partial denture...annoying as it is to go "semi-toothless" i had to lose the thing for a while and had a new one made...to fit without liner

Hello Guys,

I think I have the same problem since January 2011.My upper lip (area btw lip and nose) philtrum, is swollen. When I shave it, it becomes worse. After 1 year, I knew I am allergic to dust mites... I put covers for my bed and pillows and I have put an air purifier... Once I did that, I was really tired for this situation, I said to myself it want to stay swollen let it be, I am tired of thinking. The funny thing is that the next morning I was able to shave and the swelling was acceptable for the first time. Since that day, I am able to shave. So reducing the stress is very important as first step. As for today, my upper lip still swollen but better than before and this was due to less stress. As some of you mentioned, when I sleep a lot the swelling in the morning is terrible. I use hot water in shower to reduce it. Suggestions that need confirmation: Clenching you teeth can cause upper lip to swell (due to stress), Maybe our reaction to dust mites is responsible of that, I remember when I did the allergy test my forearms was swollen without red marks. The mistakes I have done is seeing only dermatologists, I should see ENTs, immunologists and rheumatologists. The good thing is that in hot weather, under the sun, the swelling is constant (I can eliminate inflammation as the cause of swelling), however I am not sure about that 100%. Now, I want to try a cortisone injection or prednisone 40mg for 1 month. I hope to find a doctor who is welling to do the injection.

Please reply to my post and guys share as much details as you can, we have to help each other, bcs it seems no one is able to do it for us.

Take care.
