I feel your pain. I have sever osteoarthritis of the bilateral hips and 2 bulging discs in my sPine. The shots help to lower the intemsness of the pain and allow me to walk with a little less pain. It's worth a little extra menstrual bleeding. I've only had spotting here and there.

I experienced light post-menopausal bleeding (like a 3-day very light period with cramps and all) within in a week of having an oral surgical procedure that  required intravenous steriods to avoid excessive swelling in my throat. No one told me that vaginal bleeding was a potential side effect of admistering steriods, so needless to say I was alarmed after not having a period for a few years!

After visiting 2 different gynos, a pelvic sonogram, blood tests, and a very uncomforable endometrial biopsy, I was told that steroids can stimulate uterine lining, even in post-menopausal women. It was the second gyno who I learned this from, but only after I continued to probe as to why I would have bled if all my tests and the biopsy were normal.

My gyno said that the relationship between steriods and bleeding is not widely known, but she has seen it in her 30 years of practice. Seems to me that she could have inquired more during my first visit when I disclosed that I had a surgical prodecure prior to the unexpected bleeding. Additionally, after some web research, I found there are many papers regarding this and recommendations that patients should be alerted to the potential side effect prior when administering steroids.

Maybe my gyno would have wanted to do the endo biopsy anyway just to be sure, but it sure would have been good to know this was likely why I bled. Would have spared me a some sleepless nights and unecessary tests.

I had bleeding for 10 days after my first epidural shot.  55 and have not had a period in 2 years.  and then I had another shot and started bleeding again, I'm again on my 10th day and it is very heavy.  I went to the gyno and had a pelvic ultrasound and when I said I had the shots he immediatly said that was the cause.  I still have to have a biopsy to make sure everythink is ok but he is 90% positive that it was caused by the shots.  And the shots did not ever work for my back pain!  Never again!

I have been on my period for over 2 months after having a cortizone shot. My gyno told me he sees this all the time. He has seen 80 year old women who no longer have their period, get a period after a cortizone shot. He actually asked me if I had one lately!
Crazy!

I also have this unfortunate side effect and I am trying to find out if the bleeding can be harmful in anyway to post menopausal women.  Anyone know the answer?????

I do not think it is harmful, In my case it just got my hormons going to produce a period. I had all the tests to rule out any other problems causing the bleeding and the Gyno. was certain it was from the cortizone. She did say it could happen again if I had another Cortizone shot. As long as you have seen a Gyno. and have had the tests they recommended you should be ok.

Had a cortisone shot in my knee on May 27th. Started my regular period on schedule on June 3rd, ended around the 8th. About five days later, I started having some spotting, which I've never had happen before. Over the next few days, it got heavier until today when it's like a regular period again. So I've had spotting and a second period within five days of the last one. I'm pretty certain it's the cortisone, as I've never had anything like this before, and haven't done anything differently other than get that shot.

So glad I found this! I too had a week long "period" after two years after stopping menstrual cycles. I'm 53 and had two steriod injections in lower back two weeks previous to onset of bleeding. Doctor's really should warn of this potential side effect.

WOW. Found this site by accident (sorta). Here's my story. 18 months ago I had a cortisone shot for carpal tunnel. A week later I started a period. Since I am 20 years POST menopause, I asked my gyn if the cortisone may have caused this reaction. She assured my the shot did not magically make my "ovaries wake up." Fast forward a year: diagnosed with discoid lupus. Every 8-10 weeks I have anywhere from 3 to 22 steroid shots in my scalp, trying to stop the lesions and prevent more from forming. Guess what. Exactly 7 days after the shots I start cramping and bleeding. Puleeze! I am way too old for this! So, again I contacted my gyn and she did some research and found out that a small number of women have this reaction. So we will be monitoring the situation and I am going to try to see what alternatives exist to treat the Lupus. This can't be good for me. Just an FYI to those who have experienced the same problem.

Did a post but it hasn't appeared. Yes, am 20 years post menopausal and taking steroid shots for lupus. Having periods 7 days after the shots. Gyn not too concerned, ordered ultrasound. I think it is hormonal reaction.
