I had a PE about 4 months ago and have been on Warfarin ever since.  I just want to echo the same thoughts that I have read on this page; I gained close to 20 lbs in about 2 months.  I have been trying to limit my calories and exercise more (I have been doing the "Insanity" workout program for about 7 weeks and feel great physically) and the weight is very slowly coming off.  I've only lost about 8 pounds of the original 20 gained.  I have never worked so hard to lose so few pounds.

I take Pantoprazole in the morning to decrease the chance of an ulcer while on Warfarin.  I'm not sure if it could be a combination of the two or if just Warfarin is to blame.

I am off the prescription in two months and can't wait.  Hopefully the weight will come off more easily.  I'll write another post if I seem to be losing weight at a more normal.  For those of you who are on Warfarin long-term- I'm sorry......

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I am a believer that Coumadin causes weight gain. A year ago I was diagnosed with DVT and placed on this medicine and have gained 40 pounds. Since last year I've also being diagnosed as pre-diabetic. My doctors are surprised because of this. In April, I joined a Wellness program in my city. I have Crohns, with constant BSD and you would think I would have dropped weight. Not so, actually, after changing my eating, cutting my foods because I can't eat because of the BSD I lost 4 pounds and then immediately put them back on. Haven't lost a pound since. Here is my 5-6 day workout schedule:  Walk 30-45 minutes; weight lifting 10 pounds maximum 30-40 mins; and volley ball 45-60 min. I do each of these exercises no less than 5 days a week which means I work out 1-2 hours those days. I am working feverishly trying to reverse this pre-diabetes...I even dropped all the white flour products, sugar, w.potatoes, w.rice, and still nothing. Question - have any of you also been diagnosed with pre-diabetes since taking Coumadin.  Oh, hoping the doctor can take me off this medicine later this month.

Wishing each of you mental wellness...healthiness...and happiness.

I have been on warfarin since middle of April as a result of a large DVT and 4 PE from the birth control Yaz. I am a 19 year old girl who is a collegiate athlete. I run 50-60 miles a week and lift weights. With all that, i have gained a good 8-10 pounds. I have been so discouraged with the weight I have gained while on warfarin. I have felt puffy, fat, depressed, and have the desire to constantly eat. I am always exhausted and it's all I can do to get my workout in for the day. I am hoping to get off at 3 months which would be within a week or two but we will see! I would love to hear from those who have had success losing weight after stopping the medicine!

I am happy to report that May 15th 2013 I was able to get off the coumadin and am now on 325mg asprin daily.

My hemotoligist saw nothing in my blood work (clotting factors) that caused him concern to keep me on it.

However, he did say that if I throw another clot I will be on it for life. In which case I will then try the drug Xarelto.

My brother is a sales rep for the company and has pretty much put things into perspective for me. Coumadin, though on the market for 50+ years is also out dated...It's time for a change. Ask your doctors about the drug. I do not want to repeat the effects I felt while taking coumadin. I am a little over 2 months off the drug and feel like I have "ME" back mentally and the weight is coming off. I know for some a 10lb. weight gain doesn't seem like much, but when you have been active and healthy and have never had a health issue with weight, it really can throw one for a loop. I am VERY grateful for the fact that I am alive and well...I would choose a drug any day to be able to be here for my family and grand kids...BUT, I firmly believe the coumadin was the cause of the weight gain...I challenge a docotr to post the effects if any one of them have been, or are on the coumadin. It would be interesting to hear what they have to say. Good luck to you all. Blessing and happy health!

I recently paid a visit to my doctor and mentioned the weight gain to him. It's funny because his reaction and response to the question is so very much out of his character. He acts very suspicious and says, "there's no evidence of that." I don't know but after reading a 1000 plus articles where 99.9% report that they have gained weight. I'm not sure if there isn't something more to this MEDICINE. One other thing is I'm glad to hear from someone else that they experience the "always being hungry" feeling. I'll eat 6 tuna fish sandwiches in 10 minutes, and then feel like I'm starving.

It all doesn't make sense, There was a mix-up with the Coumadim and the pharmacy and didn't take it for 12 days. Could I of had a problem. I'm sure I could have. So I really made myself aware of how I felt.

NO COUMADIN EQUALED the best I have felt in 5 years. Trust it makes you gain a lot of weight.

Well it's lunch time. Be right back have to get a loaf of bread, from the store. lolol.

I've been on Coumadin for 4 years now... I've gained almost 80 lbs... granted I may be experiencing a shift in metabolism, since I started when I was 21 and am now 25, and was 143 lbs and really underweight for being 6'3", but the weight gain started when I started Coumadin... Others I have talked to also cite Coumadin as a medication that prompted substantial weight gain

I've been on coumadin for almost 10 years...because weight gain was not suppose to be associated with the drug, it took me up until recently to figure out that coumadin is behind my weight gain, without a doubt.  My weight gain started in my stomach area around the same time time I started to take the coumadin.

When I started having noticeable weight gain, I went to my primary care doctor for her to run some tests to see what was causing it...it was not what I was putting in my mouth and I had an physically active job.  She ordered a blood work up and wanted me back in a week.  I chopped down trees and did all sorts of physical activity and really kinda' starved myself.  When I returned to my doctors office a week later and weighed in, the scale indicated I had "gained" 10 pounds over the week.  I insisted their scale had to be wrong and demanded another scale be used...I had indeed gained 10 pounds over the seven days.

My doctor was a good one but unfortunately, she gave up medicine to raise her children. My complaints about my weight gain has fallen on deaf ears by all of my subsequent doctors.  A few years ago, I simply stopped complaining to my doctors and kept gaining weight...and became very depressed and went on Xanax to help ease my anxieties...but was never convinced the weight gain was due to my diet or exercise regime.

I am 5 feet 9 inches and was a svelte vixen before coumadin...now I've gained "100" pounds over the past 10 years and feel like a hippo...I recently visited websites with others complaining of the same problem...I was relieved to see that I was not alone...I went to see my rheumatologist today to take me off coumadin and put me on some other drug...he's lazy and wants my primary care doctor and neurologist to handle eveything...in my opinion he's seems pretty useless...I will not be seeing him again.  I have made an appointment with my primary care doctor to get her to make the change (she asked me in the past if my rheumatologist was telling me about the newer drugs)...I will be going off of this coumadin soon (one way or another)...

While it's suppose to save our "life", it seems that, at least for some of us, coumadin has significantly lowered our quality of life with all this weight gain...

I'm confident I will start "living" again once I'm off of this drug...

Hi dab. Please keep us updated on your mission. When my dose of warfarin was raised plus being switched to the brand name, my love handles grew. I'm 8 months off it and still not back to normal. Recently my arms and chest have gone down . My arms an inch which I hope means that the stomach/ obliques ar soon to come. I'm like everyone else here that bust their ass exercising and eating not that much but nothing comes off. I hate the "you put on weight" comments. I someone's gonna be the straw that broke the camels back.

Hi. I am so sorry that the doctors seem to keep turning a deaf ear about the weight gain~ I have been off of the warfarin now since May and am happy to report that I have lost all but 4 lbs of the 10 I gained. I know that that seems miniscule as compaired to many of you, but for me, as active as I was, it was a losing battle, one I haven't had to contend with in over 20 years. My brother is a sales rep for the new product Xarelto and really encouraged me to go on it. I guess I thought I should stay with the "old ways" rather than try something new, it is also expensive if you don't have good health insurance. I have decided that if I do have another blood clots, that will be my choice. It sure beats the worry about added weight as well as the depression. I wish you all the best. Please keep posting...
