Hi, Thankgoodness I found this site. I have been on Warfarin for 18 months and have gained over 30lbs in weight. I had a DVT and was operated on to remove it and thought the weight gain was because of the lack of exersize following surgery. I was also put on Statins and I'm convinced the two drugs are responsible as I eat a healthy diet and it hasn't changed much since before I had the DVT. :'(
Hi I am having the same problem I have been on Coumadin 7.5mg for the last 2 years and need to be on it for the rest of my life. I have put on 20Kg.......and nothing I do no matter how little I eat is shifting it. I too have asked my Oncoligist and he says it is not related, but I think it is. I am going to print the whole of this site response and bring it to him on my next vitis. I do hope they can do something about it, because I feel really uncomfortable and frustrated that no matter how little I eat the weight just does not come down. it is true....
I too am taking warfarin and I am also gaining weight seems like daily. All my clothes are so tight that I will probably have to buy all new clothes, like I'm made of money, right? lol. Anyway, I have the weight gain, severe fatigue, itchy skin and I'm hardly eating that much to gain all the weight I have been gaining. I couldn't find anywhere online that I could get any answers to until I reached this page. I thank you all for sharing your pain. At least I know that I'm not alone. I thought I was going crazy. Couldn't figure out why I was so tired even after sleeping ten hours at night. And then there is the other problem of not being able to sleep at night as well.
If you guys have any more suggestions please email me. Thanks so much.
I was on warfarin for about a year and gained 13 lbs (that's a lot for me because of my metabolism). I switched to another blood thinner called rivaroxaban about 3 months ago. I have pretty much lost all the extra weight.
Are there any side effects with rivaroxban and do you need to have blood testing to monitor your iNR?
I have been on Coumadin for 12 years. I have to take it the rest of my life. I have a valve prothesis. Since 2002, I have gained 40 pounds. My hair is and has been falling out, I am exausted and depressed. Just saying..
I have gained weight while on this pill, it seems to got to my butt and legs, never had that trouble be for.
I'm gonna say it's the Ritalin that's helping you out!
I gained 35 pounds on a different blood thinner myself. My guess is that it basically makes fat pads more "reachable" by the bloodstream, so you can accumulate white blood cells and fluid in your fat. Exactly what you do about that is something I don't know for sure, but you probably want to avoid anything that stimulates the immune system and increases the production of white blood cells that eventually get "stuck" in fat, and it may be helpful to avoid salty foods.
I have been on warfarin since Sept. 2, 2013. At that time I was weighing only about 170 lbs. I am now at 184 lbs. It has made me eat more than I have in the past.
I have gained 50 pounds in three years
I am taking Coumadin and have gained ten pounds while taking it for two months. I exercise everyday, but cannot lose weight.
