My butt hurts, real deep, like the bone. Same leg that I tore my hamstring last fall. I'm thinking piriformis. Walking is painful. I'm tapering, how can this happen :|
sounds like it to me.
i have worked on piriformis syndrome for the last year or so with foam rollers. i'd been told it was very tight and very prone to injury, not to mention it was throwing everything else off, posture wise, on that side of my body. the roller has helped in a preventative way.
if you have a trusted sports massage therapist, he or she could make a diagnosis..it may just be knotted up and needs to be released which is the next best thing to torture in itself, but sometimes it's an instant cure. the first time i had piriformis therapy, i swear i walked out 3 inches taller
i hope you get an answer soon. injury in taper is cruel and unusual punishment. :toobad:

I have an appointment with a new therapist tommorrow, I guess I will try and see my old one, he has helped me in the past with an ache that showed up in taper. I just hate driving over an hour to see him.
I did treat my legs to hills over spring break and my last long run I ran downhill for three miles by putting boards on the back of my 'mill. I think that was my breaking point :umno:
I'm going to feel weird tomorrow seeing MT for the first time. "I need you to rub my butt" 8O
I DO have a posture problem, when I stand I drop my hip. My physical therapist from my hamstring thingy told me it was going to be very difficult to change. My husband likes to :nono: "you don't stretch and you're getting old" :|

haven't you been introduced to the tennis ball routine?
sit on it. :P
sit on it. :P
Oh my. Sounds like it to me too. The tennis ball thing I've heard does wonders. Your tapering for Boston, right? Hopefully the therapist can head you in the right direction.
my.god...
my piriformis ended me in high school... of course it probably had something to do with me deciding to run the entire cross country season hurt anyway - and was effectively unable to run through the indoor season, and didn't exactly fully recover for outdoors... (i did it for the team dammit - and don't worry, my coach messed up and didn't even remember me in awards season and i didn't even get my team certificate. dammit). *anyhoos*
but yeah, i had to do physio - little electrode shock treatment for 10-20 minutes twice a week for 2 months.
walking hurt. somedays i couldn't even walk 100m, and my piriformis took turns yanking oppposite sides of my back out of place... (we never did determine if my back or piriformis went).
i got some special stretches - but i have no idea how to properly describe them :( go see a physio person. if you hurt your piriformis - you could be feeling it for a long long long time.
i still get it somedays when i go out running. good luck...

Actually, massage therapists are not legally allowed to diagnose. This person may have an avulsion fracture of the ischium. That should be ruled out. Piriformis syndrome is a possibility. Do figure-4 stretching actively (not passively) if it is. Massage therapy is excellent. Trigger point myotherapy is excellent. Foam rolling or myofascial release for piriformis can work well. Golf ball under the ass therapy can work too. 8O
my god...my piriformis ended me in high school...Hahahahahaha..."ended me"... I got it.
I also had what I thought was PF...turned out to be mis-diagnosed. It was high hamstring tendonitis. Same symptoms.
Tennis ball is a great idea, espeically while driving. At home, put a softball on the floor, sit on it to massage the area.
Combinating of that, the right strethces, deep tissue massage, chrio adjustments had me back on the roads in three weeks.
