I have a question I have been on 5mg oxycodone 1-2 every 6 hours and 40mg oxycontin 4 times a day for chronic pain that I have. The medication is not working as well as it used to so I called the doctor about possibly getting a stronger dose now my doctor is talking about slowly taking me off of them and putting me on something new.
I am not sure what they would put me on in place of the oxy's? He said something about possibly a non narcotic, now I am not saying it has to be a narcotic to work but with this high amount of pain and coming from oxy's what can i go on that will effectively help the pain?

How do I tell the doctor that I just want to try a higher dose and not something new with out getting something bad written in my chart? Also I was calling around pharmaceutical companies to see about discounts and such and I talked to Purdue that makes Oxycontin and come to find out that they have a card that some patients can have that they give to the doctors that covers up to $70 of the co pay. With that being said now that I can get it basically for free on my tight budget I do not want to switch.

Does anyone have any advice?
As frequently as you are taking oxycontin you may need to discuss slowly withdrawing you off of it. You maybe addicted to it and not know it. From personal experience the withdrawal is not pleasant. You may also discuss with your physician a referral to a pain center where there are physicians who specialize in treating different kinds of pain. I have disc degenerative disease in my lumbar and cervical spine which causes a lot of pain. My pain doctor uses series of caudal epidureal injections that control my spinal pain for six to seven months. The strongest pain reliever I use is Flexeril once a day as needed. Please check out the oxycontin situation.

There is not much they can do right now except pain medication eventually I will be trying some surgeries and hopefully those will help but in the mean time I am in horrible pain asn my doctors and I have to at least work on something.  My pain clinic dr is being very frustrating as I had to change my appt due to work and I can not lose my job and I just got it but now he can not get me in until December 8th.  He will not do or change anything until he sees me.  I think it is a little riduclas to make me suffer that long.  I do not understand why he can not have my GI or my primary look at me and give those results and consult with me over the phone or skype or something.  My life is coming to a stand still from being ill all the time from this I am so miserable.  I dont want to miss work but I have to so I guess i should of just went oh well
