I just took Depo Vera for the first time on December 20th, 2010. I am now due for another shot March 7, 2011. I don't know if I should go back, because when I first got the shot I had no period for two weeks, then had wierd brown discharge for about three weeks which stopped my sex life completly, and my fiance didnt care we werent having sex but of course he wanted to, so did I, but it had a wierd odor and was heavy. Then I didnt get anything for another two weeks, then my period came, and I figured it was normal. I have now been on a heavy, brownish, very bloody period for thirteen days, and my regular period usually last me 2-3 days at the most, and are very light. I hope it will stop soon, because I'm young and sex is important to me, I just graduated High School, and I am attending college, just got our own apartment. I just want to live a normally, with a healthy sex life. Can anyone tell me if there is any way I can stop the random bleeding and spotting? Please.

You poor thing, I have posted here previously. I have been on this for 13 years and now have got in touch with a publicist and may be in the papers in the UK soon to raise awareness. I have now been given a website where we can report adverse affects.

https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk

PLEASE PLEASE Report using this and the phone number ***edited by moderator*** phone numbers not allowed Ask for 'medical info' to report adverse affects.

If we all get together and raise the alarm on this, then Pfizer will do some more research into Amenhorea (lack of periods).

I came of it when i was 30 to have kids, I am 32 now and have not had a period since 1997!!!! No children...

Please girls lets do something about this! Yours, Alison xxxxxxx

I have also been wondering about whether Depo has caused infertility in me . I have been on Depo on and off for 7 years taking a break every two years to make sure I could still have a period as advised by my physician. I did not get my shot in September of 2010 and almost 7 months later, I have yet to have a period. All the other times I have gotten off I have had a period within 3 months. I want to be able to concieve in the near future, but for the first time ever I am thinking I may not be able to. Depo has also caused me to gain 50 pounds and Im finding it very hard to lose the weight. Im sure depo has suppressed my metabolism because I am eating the same things in the same quantity as before I started Depo. For anyone wanting to get on Depo I would definately think twice.

my dear adoption is not so simple like that I am adopted so I absolutely agree with adoption but there are very many women and men who would make excellent parents but can't adopt because they don't make tones of money or becausr they have an unconventional partner (this one doesn't make it impossible but much much harder) so I do agree ppl are having kids too young and perhaps adoption is a good consideration for some but certainly not all good candidates get considered for reasons I believe aren't good enough one myself so though certain parts of you're statement are accurate the way you presented them and you're lack of concideration for circumstance is somewhat rude in my eyes

I cannot believe that someone such as yourself could be so insensitive to other people's pain. I do not have infertility problems, but everyone I know who has taken depot provera shots has either not conceived as of yet or it took many many years for them to conceive. I am glad that you do not have problems and your sister did not, but you are not the only person in the entire world. (You are the one who is being selfish.) Just because it is on the market does not mean it is safe. It takes many reported cases and "proof" to have a product pulled off of the shelves. Remind yourself of all the products they used to consider safe and have since pulled off the shelves....some of those products were used for years! Trained professionals are still removing aspestos to this day from buildings. Do not assume that because it is sold it must be safe. The FDA does not make companies prove the safety of their products before they are sold, and only after so many problems are reported does the FDA step in and pull the product. If nobody wants to admit a problem exists, it can be extremely difficult to prove a problem was caused by a specific product. As for adoption...it is a great thing, but who are you to judge these women for wanting to have a child of their own? Pregnancy and birth are beautiful experiences that most women dream of experiencing from the time they are children. It is part of being a woman, and the emotional and psychological turmoil experienced by those who are not able is not something that should be downplayed or made fun of. Try to be a little more compassionate! If people treated everyone how they would like to be treated themselves, the world would be a better place, and those children without parents would probably have them!!!

You have made some very insensitive statements. What me and my husband are experiencing right now goes beyond your petty statements. Have a heart for other peoples situations and you don't be selfish.

I was on Depo for 3 years with no problems. Got off the shot and 1 month later started my period and it was completely regular and then 8 months later was pregnant with my son. Went back on the shot and have been on it for a little over 6 years now. Reading everything I have, I am thinking of going off it because I have been on it for so long. Hearing about bone loss and early menopause and messed up hormones scares me.

I was on the shot from Oct 08 to Oct 09 and it took me over a year to get a period every month. My cycle use to be every 28 days on the dot since I started when I was 13 and it would last for about 4 days.. Now its 33 days and lasts closer to 6 days.. I have been taking ovulation tests and cannot get a positive one to save my life.. I was told by my doctor if I didn't have a "normal" period by last Oct to come in and get clomid.. He also said to wait 3 full cycle months b/4 we started trying (never told me why) So here it is almost 2 years later and not pg :( I really think it has something to do with the depo I did not have problems getting pregnant the first time around.. Not trying to be gross but the position my daughter was conceived in was very awkward and we were not actually trying to get pg..  so Idk what the deal is we actually try around the 14-20th day to conceive trying every other day to try and hit when I could be ovulating.. Its really frustrating.. :'(

Wow Hearing all your stories I feel blessed. I was on depo since I was 14years old I got off of it when I was 19. 10 months later I became pregnant and have a healthy baby girl. I'm back on it and I love the shot i hope in my future when I decide to get off of it I can become pregnant again. I'm now 23 and plan for another child in 4-5 years maybe I'll consider the iud until then.

I started the depo shot nearly two years ago. I have had my menstration since age 8, very heavy because of rape and a history of early menstration. So ever since then my periods were normal every month and heavy, making my anemia pretty bad. I guess when I got older it became heavier and my doctor tried to put me on contraceptives but I would throw up. So she decided to have me give the depo shot a try. I don't remember if she told me all of the side effects but they would ask how I was feeling after each use. She said it had just come on the market and was a newer drug. I noticed it was harder to breathe. I had bad indigestion and was gaining weight in the first cycle. I had a bad feeling but continued taking it. I took two shots and stopped after my second shot was given because I wanted to have babies and noticed some of the bad side effects such as gaining lots of weight and getting acne. My period was gone by the third full month. I was in my mid to high 120's and was a normal BMI when I began. Now I am up to nearly 160 pounds in only 2 years I gained around 35 pounds which for me is a lot. I also got acne which was worst than when I was a teen. It has been nearly two years since my last shot was completely out of my system. I am still in my high 150's and my period is very irregular. I feel like a bloated whale. Never in my life have I been this heavy especially it is dangerous since I am 5'0 and very petite. Any suggestions?

@destructionsrighthand whether you believe that teenagers should be put on this drug is a moot point. The fact of the matter is that there are teenagers out there who were put on the drug for reasons other than being sexually active and are being denied the ability to feel like a normal woman because their bodies are betraying them. I am one of these women. I was 17 and diagnosed with endometriosis, I had surgery and was put on depo without being given the possibilities. If I was going to have all the trouble with staying pregnant that I am now I would rather they had done a hysterectomy. It is painful to know that it is not your fault and there is nothing you can do differently. I was unaware that there was a possibility and though I think adoption is great every woman wants to feel normal. I feel broken.
