Actually sweating does help you lose weight also the body toxins, in other words where there is heat there is WORK done, there are many theories that are related, but not directly, you need to sweat in order to lose weight as simple as that, get your simple physics facts straight and then comment whether the sweating "wont help" cheers

It depends on where you are sweating because sweating either means you are just losing the water from your body. If losing water is also a sign of burning calories and fat, then yes, sweating indicates weight loss, not just because you are sweating, but because your body is telling you I am burning calories. If you go to a sauna, your body will lose water through sweat but then when you drink liquids it will come back. If you are on a machine however, and you continuously use that machine and eat healthy, then yes, you will lose weight and that sweating is a sign that you are burning calories, burning fat, and losing weight. It depends on where you are sweating. the sauna is temporary weight loss. The machines at the gym are a sign of permanent weight loss because you are moving your body to create that sweat. I came on this website with a question that I had the answer to.

Normally I don't leave comments as I browse through forums. But I would like to share my experience this time as I appreciate the information other people provided. I have done some research and experiments recently to the effort of trying to lose some weight, the conclusion is pretty simple:

1. If you accumulate 3500 calories in addition to what your body need then you gain one pound. To lose one single pound, you need to shed of 3500 calories in addition to how much your body consumes. Simple math.

2. From #1, diet helps as it controls and reduce the accumulation.

3. When dieting, your body's metabolism tends to slow down because your body think you are in a surviving mode.

4. Now exercise comes in. You need to do cardio to maintain your metabolism and avoid #3.

5. Even more exercise. Weight training will build muscle, and muscles consumes more energy, hence, burning more fat.

If you summarize the above, in order to lose weight, you need to diet and burn away fat. The most direct and healthy method to burn fat is through exercise, cardio or weight training, or all.

sorry I am kind of off topic from "sweating" but it is all related somehow. Sweat is one of the indicator that shows you are burning fat. So there is no direct relationship between sweat and weight loss, you really should ask how your sweat comes from.

Of course, sauna should help at some point because it generates heat which raise your heart rate and then your body heat starts to melt off some fat. But I doubt this loss is magnificent nor its sustainability.

After all, we not only try to lose weight, we also try to maintain weight. If the lost weight comes back as soon as we stop the fit-keeping method, whatever it is, not only it doesn't help, the up and downs of your body weight is also not healthy.

Just to clarify...Im signed up to enter the marine corps in the next few weeks. I have to lose 16 pounds before nov 6th. Ive been working out ( treadmill, and oliptical) for a week wearing my sauna suit and have lost 6 pounds in a week already. I run/walk 1 1/2 miles in 30 mins and stay on the oliptical for 30 mins everyday in the morning. I was 246 last week im 240 today. Everyone who says that sweating does not help lose fat/water/weight is WRONG. whe your body is sweating due to cardio excersize. your metabolism is faster, and since your sweating your burning calories and losing water weight. My advice to anyone trying to lose weight is do the routine i just mentioned. eat 5 SMALL meals per day. no carbs! and NO SALT AT ALL!!! Stick to this routine and you WILL lose weight. The only thing is that you have to watch what you eat, and you have to drink plenty of fluids while wearing your sauna suit or you will have severe side effects! Unless you people know what your talking about then keep your mouths shut! If you need something to run your mouth to, use the wall. at least that way you wont waste anyones time except yourselves!!! MARINE CORPS ALL THE WAY!!!

if u dont eat salt to replace ur electrolytes ur not going to stick to it very long. u know the new fangled gatoraid? thats what it does.. you've been exercising for a week lol, ur an expert now. u should wait to drop ur water weight like a week before ur scale date, just go for fat loss until then.. just eat like 150g of protein a day, and very low amounts of fat, and only complex carbs. when your body uses energy, which is all the time, it gets it from both food and fat at all times. if ur only source of food energy is complex carbs like oats, it forced the percent of energy u get from fat to go up. so eat protein and oatmeal and ur good to go, just try to burn an extra 1k calories a day, and u'll lose about 2 lbs a week, it doesnt get any faster than that

so shes wanting to lose weight?

if she goes at it like she is then its not really going to do anything. and she will get sick of running eventually cause later she will be like " ugh running drag!!"

if she wants to lose weight she needs to have fun with it, getting her heart rate up.

hip hop abs by sean t help. they have a video [called fat burning cardio thats 30 mins and it really helps.

also a great way to lose pure fat is to work out in the morning and to have a good night sleep

the thing about working out in the morning is that u cant have anytihng to eat or drink but water untill you actually work out.

if u get 6+ hours of GOOD sleep your body turns into restore mode and starts the left over food from that day, but only if u sleep long enough and good enough. and you cant have anything 3 hours before you go to bed.

but if you wake up and stretch then workout. your burning the FAT your body has STORED... thats what most women want yes?

as a wrestler, i do sweat to lose weight. but when i drink water it does come back on. i also eat healthy, lots of fruits and rice. i've tried crash dieting, and let me tell you.. it doesn't work nearly as good as dieting the right way. and if you eat greasy food, it makes you feel sluggish and doesn't let you sweat as much

so some say that you can sweat out fat! 43 degrees C is equal to 109.4 degrees F (for us Americans). At 109.4 degrees of core (interior) body temp., your brain will burn up and you will die. sweat is your body's air conditioner. Fat is fuel for energy use latter, oh yeah and for insulation in cold weather. This stuff is high school biology/science.

As a heath science post-graduate, here is my 2 cents...

Lots of complicated biochemical cycles / pathways are included for all kinds of cell functions. These biochemical cycles all have initial and end products. The net energy gained or loss is basically calculated by the energy change between the initial and end products (basic chemistry).

For example, when your body is burning fat:

Breakdown of fat ---> energy released ---> byproducts

Energy loss + used = Energy of fat - Energy of byproducts
(Delta H and Enthalpy changes, calculated in joules)

Most energy --> fuel cells for body movements (which includes more complex biochemical pathways)
Some energy released as heat. etc.

To be honest with you, even the storage/formation of fat requires energy. However, because the net product "fat" has a very high potential energy, energy used in building up the fat is abysmal.

Back to the topic...

When your brain transfer signals to produce sweat when body temperature increaes, the production of sweat requires energy. Simply put, your sweat glands won't secrete these compounds without the use of energy.

Hence, no matter its sweating due to body movements or high temperature, the production of sweat will definitely consume energy.

However...
Is sweating = significant energy loss? No.
Is sweating = significant weight loss? No.

I totally agree with the guy above, according to physics this is correct. and losing water from your body is short lived. you rather lose fat. the best thing to do is exercise and eat well. stop trying to find a easy way out ppl.

OK, someone needs to moderate these answers i came in for an answer to see if you could loose weight without sweating and i leave more confused than ever. Stating your credentials before you make a statement could be a start.

Is just by sweating ppl start loosing weight then no one would use AC in summers and become hot skinny models. This is the most stupid thing i have ever heard in my life. U loose fat by increasing heart rate by using your body for a long period of time. Sweat has nothing to do with it. And the guy who lost 60 pounds its all because of the walk and diet and again has nothing to do with sweat.
please read some real science book and stop listening to your high school drop out friends.

I'm a doctor and after reading what many people have wrote, I thought I should chime in:

Sweating is a sign of increased body temperature. In normal humans, increased body temperature is a sign that the body is physically active and this increased activity causes weight loss in itself. But aside from the increase physical activity aspect I'll discuss increase temp vs. sweating.

1) Increased Body Temperature: This will significantly burn energy. For each 1 degree increase in body temp, your energy expenditure raises by 10%. This is a common reason why people with a fever lose weight (as well as the appetite suppression). Fever is a coordinated human response to sickness. Unlike the post above stating "artificial fever", fever is actually your body regulated response to fighting infection. The reason it does this is complex and not within the context of this forum.

Another reason for an elevated body temperature is "hyperthermia", which is an UNregulated increase in temperature. This can occur through saunas, plastic bags while working out, or endocrine diseases such as hyperthyroidism. This will also cause increased metabolism for each minute the body's temp is above normal. Hyperthyroid patients are usually very thin. However, artificially increasing your body temp is dangerous for 2 reasons. 1) an increase to a temp of 104 can cause a heat stroke or sudden death. 2) High temp will cause the body to sweat perfusely which can cause dehydration and lead to either fainting or damage to end organs (rare). I would not advise raising body temp in order to lose weight, there are much healthier alternatives.

2) The process of sweating itself does not cause true weight loss other than the dehydration effects. Another disease called hyperhidrosis is an increase sweat production regardless of body temp. People who suffer from this disease have no significant difference in body weight than normal adults. As a matter of fact, obesity is a risk factor for hyperhidrosis. Like I said, its not the sweating that causes increased metabolism, its the increase in body temp.

Hope that clarifies this debate.

Sweating means loosing water. But she should drink a lot to regenerate water balance in her body. When she is loosing water she is loosing all toxins an bad substances from her body and that's why she improves her metabolism and looses weight. So, sweating is loosing weight but she must be careful and drink...!
Wish u success!!!! Sweat and loose weight!

Back in the day, around 1982, I was extremely fat for my 5'5" frame. I was 200 hundred lbs. , basically baby fat and also I was 15 years old.

I had great success with a sauna suit. I ran 3 times a day, (morning, afternoon and early evening), for 45 minutes. I lost 30 lbs. withn 45 days.

This really help out with my social life and being more excepted by your peers and of course girls.

On a hot day, I might have loss a cup or more of body sweat per 45 minute run. If it got to hot, I would pull my shirt suit up and let myself cool off for a little while. Or pull out around the neck.

The sauna suit was a blessing for me.

Good luck with it.
