I found Dr. Katz to be rude, and sort of obnoxious. the girl at the front was short tempered with an elderly woman there which i thought was really mean and when i mentioned it to dr. katz he asked me what concern it was to me and to focus on our visit! I would never go back

after 6 weeks of no answers (including from our pediatrican and a top pediatric rheumatologist) and my son (11) being in chronic pain (no drugs would ease the pain in his joints - inc. pain killers), we were given a choice to follow dr. katz's round of recommended antibiotics for lyme OR put my child (otherwise healthy, social, etc) into a hospital for 4-5 days for intensive physical/mental therapy to break him out of the fibromyalgia he said he had. needless to say, the choice was easy...5 days into antibiotics (combined w/something that makes the cells more receptive) my child was back. i'd call it a miracle. my son has been a healthy, thriving boy for 2 years now. now my brother is suffering from something and we've just returned today from his office. he is a true diagnostician who takes EVERYTHING into consideration when evaluating you. you can watch the wheels turn. note he does not take insurance, so you have to pay quite a bit out of pocket and submit it yourself. it's worth every penny.

Dr Katz is a compasionate, smart, honest DR. He cured my mom after years of misdiagnosis ( she had Lymes that did show up in reuglar blood tests). His blond receptionist is a bit of a witch.. on the other h and i am not there to see the receptionist. I am there to see The Dr. I have heard great things about him from other neurologists.. that seems to me to be a pretty positive recommendaiton.

I have probably seen over a dozen specialists over the years, from infectious disease doctors, to rheumatologists, neurologists, you name it. I have had terrible chronic pain and fatigue that has only worsened over time. I have been tested over and over for lyme through bloodwork -- always negative. Fibromyalgia, they would say. Here's some pain killers. Try these happy pills. Great.

I started seeing an MD who someone recommended to me and he has been treating me for lyme by giving me daily shots for the past three months -- but he has recently stopped treatment. He says there's not much more he can do and that I should exercise and just try to sweat out the rest of the bacteria, eat healthy, etc.

Can anyone tell me, does Dr. Katz insist on doing a Spinal Tap before treating people? I heard that even spinal taps don't always reveal lyme. And can someone tell me his methods -- does he ever give IV drips so people can help themselves at home? What kinds of antibiotics does he prescribe? I am desperately asking because I cannot afford an uninsured consultation with a doctor unless I know ahead of time that it's really worth it. Thanks!

Hey, I know your post is about a year old but you might still need the info. I meet with Dr Katz after years of misdiagnoses; on our first meeting he mentioned Fibro and MS and Lyme and said we might have to do a spinal tap.
But the first thing he did was drawing blood. My Lyme tests came back more than often negative but wherever he sent it, it came back positive or positive enough for him (it was NOT igenex and was covered by insurance). So he started treated me for Lyme and never talked about a spinal tap. For him, it all stemmed from there.
I never had any problems with receptionists and overall they have been quite diligent with my stuff (referrals, insurances etc...), although it was hard to get a first appointment: I had to drive down there and be quite forceful. He does not take insurance and yes he is a bit of a character, which can put Americans off. I have been on treatment with him for 6 months and I like him. I think he is kind but this might not be obvious. Definitely a good Lyme doctor.

Insurances reimburse for visits to Dr. Katz ie BCBS, but you have to submit the claim yourself.I hope that you followed through on your tentative plan to see Dr. Katz. He isn't there to diagnose Lyme; he is there to diagnose YOU, and you can rely on his thoroughness, objectivity, deep compassion and insight. The reason you can wind up with a positive for Lyme from one blood draw versus another is two-fold: May not have been a Lyme infection previously (not likely!), or the blood gets sent to a lab that tests across more variables. Insurance and AMA protocols limit the variables being tested so the results/reading isn't as sensitve, doesn't cover as broad a spectrum. When you get it sent to a lab that measures more - you might have to pay something for pieces your insurance doesn't reimburse but you have more accurate results. As far as spinal taps, Doctors, Dr. Katz included, don't use it as the first tool to diagnose things, they use it when it's necessary. And he has performed one on me himself (had one previously elsewhere) and he is competant and it wasn't painful. Wierd but not painful.
Certainly worth it after lots of runaround.

You are probably talking about a different physician. There isn't a single patient who won't rabe about his bedside manners and compassion. He did receive several times awards for being the "most companionate Doctor", which he certaily deserve.

After seeing over 20 doctors including the Mayo clinic I found
Dr.Katz. What a blessing. For the first time in 15 yrs I have an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Dr.Katz did not insist on a spinal tap. I did have the most comprehensive doctors visit I've ever had.

His staff very easy to work with, courteous and helpful with all my questions. I get a very prompt response from his staff.

I would highly recommended seeding Dr. Katz.

Hi Kara, I've phoned dr. katz's office several times since 5/18/16 requesting an appointment. I received one return call from the receptionist stating in a angry tone that she had to get my file out of storage (hadn't been there for more than 2+ years) and she had to ask dr. k. how long an appointment to book. That was several weeks ago. I have phoned and left messages on their machine without any response. I would be very grateful to hear what you did to get an appointment since my symptoms have gotten worse & are interfering with my activities of daily living. What did you do that you state was"quite forcefuL?".

I drove down there and rang the bell; when they said they didn't take walk ins, I said I wanted to make an appt (so we're talking through the intercom, I'm at the door) they said call, I said I had several times and left messages and go no reply and I had driven down to make an appt. Eventually they let me un and we scheduled something. But I had had no sign from them, angry or otherwise. Since then, we had decent communication through email; except my last one, which they didn't reply to. Your post actually makes me a bug worried: I see dr Katz less cause I'm cruising w treatment but I should make sure to see him soon so they don't drop me or put me in storage. Overall, I try to be firm but super nice when I interact with them. Don't let their anger derail you and keep your eyes on the prize: you want the appointment. Try to be super polite (I sometimes apologize for problems that are not my fault when dealing w docs or such types, just to get what I want). I know it's hard if your symptoms have worsened: everything just gets so difficult. I hope you get in. Love. K.

Also, if you don't get in: dr Zijad Sabovic (in Bridgeport CT, I think) is very good. He diagnosed me. Fees are abt same as with Katz. Dr Sabovic's sister does the front desk and she is super nice. A lot of Lyme patients see him and are happy w him. Easier to navigate than Katz' office. He is a general practitioner though but very good. Also knows his supplements. Good luck!
