A year ago tonight I was preparing for my Holep surgery. I had gone into acute retention 70 times from July2 to Oct 21. For me Christmas came early October 22. As I have stated before everyone is different in their outcome. I know I am very happy with the results of my surgery. If I had to do it again I would do it again in a heartbeat. RE is not that big of a deal to me . It feels the same to me only dry.
I have several relatives and friends who are dealing with Prostate Cancer at this time. I consider myself fortunate I am not doing that at this time.
I wish to express my thanks to Dr James Lingeman and Dr Jessica Paonessa . They Have made a big difference in my life. I would also like to thank all the nurses at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for caring for me as they did.
Due to my BPH and another health issue I was not able to travel to see my son and his family in Europe. I had a Granddaughter that was a year and a half I had not met. With the sucess of this surgery I was able to travel and visit my family.
Thank you so much to all,

jwb43,
kegals are not just for incontinence . They will help tone the pelvic floor muscles and improve your orgasm as well . Give them a shot!

Hello Just Me:
Congratulations-- I feel the same way and am also very grateful to Dr. Lingeman and staff.
I also have RE but it is the same, "only dry".
You helped me out on the site before, so thanks.
Yes, we are all different with different recoveries ( I never used a pad-left them in Indianapolis and peed well from the start). Bill in CA
I am happy for you all that you are satisfied with your outcome. I wish I could say the same. There are some other blogs with threads with lots of unhappy people. Something needs to be done to fix this RE "side effect". I know they are working on it but it is too late for a lot of men. I will never be glad I had this surgery and it really has had a huge negetive impact on my life. I think it is the younger more sexually active men that seem to be affected the most by RE. I would go back to not being able to pee in a second if I had the chance.

Steve, I might be too late with this, but there is a way to experience RE before your surgery. I have tried several of the drugs to relieve BPH symptoms, but am now prepared to try surgery, and that's why I'm on this forum. One of the drugs I've tried, and am still on, is Rapaflo. It works by relaxing the same structures that are involved in getting the semen ejected, so one of the side effects of Rapaflo is RE. I can't say that it's the same feeling as what HOLEP patients experience, but it's got to be similar. I think you'll find that it's acceptable change.
All of this were expected, the major question: what are medium and longterm outcomes.
so it is now 3 days since my surgery and I am still peeing blood. It isn't too bad but no improvements since I left the hospital. Otherwise I am not too bad, just tired and constipated somewhat.
I'm just under 2 weeks out of Holep and things seem to be going generally very well. I do have some urgency even after I urinate and - (i.e., even after I urinate, I often still feel an urge to urinate but it appears that my bladder is emty when I try to urinate again to relieve the urge). I have small amounts of bllod in my urine from time to time.. My flow is good and drmaticly improved vs. pre-Holep.
In my case, they only removed the center lobe as it was described as acting like a flapper valve because of its growth and pressing against the bladder neck/uretera. The lateral lobes were described as not interferring with urine flow. My biopsy was negative.
I was released from the hospital with no catheder the day after the surgery (hospital stay was under 24 hours) - and drove home with my girlfriend the day after my release.
Will update as I progress. Looking pretty good to date.
Hi Las
I am less than week after surgery and feel ok, except bleeding doesn't stop. It didn't change much since next morning after, my piss still looks like cranberry juice. What was your experience?
Hi Sleepless in Seattle - My first week or 10 days I had some blood in my urine at least a few times a day. In the last day or two, I'm seeing a lot less and today, my urine has been clear. I'm peeing with a strong flow but I'm not sure I'm completely emptying my bladder - and sometimes I feel like I have to pee after I just did (but it seems like a false urge). Also, I'm drinking more tan 8 glasses of water a day so its normal to have to empty it. So far, no IC. Good luck with your recovery.
Thank you Las. It is my 10th day after the surgery and I am still having some blood in urine too. I have the same feeling of false urge and pain at the end but it is getting better. For now incontinence is my major concern.
Good to hear from you, Steven
I am wondering about Kegel. Do you know any good site with instruction before I google it?
I began having erection after a week but don't proceed because of blood. After all sex is last thing that concerns me at the moment. How is your experience?
Nice to hear from you Sleepless. Now I'm on day 15 and am making slow improvement. My blood in the urine appears to be finished - haven't seen any in more than 3 days. My biggest complaint is that I still sometimes have urgency even though I just pee'd. It seems to be getting a bit better and its better on some days than others. I am drinking coffee daily which is probably not such a great idea - I have a large McDonalds regular coffee every morning...I'm also wondering about how long I should wait to try sex - I'm thinking 3 or 4 weeks from the surgury date. Have you been given any guidance on this? Great to hear from you and I'm glad you're doing better too.
