3 years ago today I was checking myself into IU Methodist Hospital. So Thankful for the Great people there. So Thankful for Jonals encouragement as we walked this road together. Anyone going through this problem should find a GOOD Dr. And consider this procedure. It was a God send for me. just me

Why don't I read anything about HoLap Abation surgery? Everyone talks
about Holep.

This site is geared to those with large or very large Prostates. Holep is not limited by size, whereas Holap is not used in Glands larger than 60 grams. just me

I'm scheduled for holep procedure with dr. Das on December 7,2015. I will let you know how I make out. Does anyone have any advice I should bear in mind prior to procedure or anything I should keep in mind post op?

Good luck with your procedure. Have some absorbent underwear for the first week or two for leakage. I bought a big package at walmart but ended up giving away most of it to someone else who was having the procedure.

I had pain for a good two months. For awhile you might feel like it's not improving, then you realize the pain is a lot less that before. For me, at 11 weeks, the pain was completely gone. My results have been perfect. I cancelled my second follow-up visit with the surgeon since I had no problems, complaints or concerns.

If they haven't told you, you are supposed to give up any fish oil or similar supplements because they can act like blood thinners promoting bleeding.

I would recommend doing Kegels Exercises...both before and after the surgery. You will have leakage and the more in tone those muscles are, the less problems you will have with that. If you are overweight, lose weight. Rather than absorbent underwear, I preferred just using pads. Everyone heals differently....you just have to have patience and recognize that in 2 to 3 months you will be so much better than you are now and it will all be worth it.

I thought it was providing an update on my HoLEP procedure, which I had 18 months ago, for the benefit of those with worries or who are based in the UK. My surgery was carried out in Cambridge, UK by Mr Aho who practises both for the UK NHS and privately. My prostate was very large at 140gms together with an enormous bladder the result of constricted urine flow. My urologist suspected my bladder would be 'dead' and not worth doing the prostate op but urodynamic tests showed the bladder pressure to be above average; good news. The op went well overall with noticeable pain for only the first few hours. There was of course the expected stinging whilst urinating but after a week this became reasonable. The urine flow rate was superb and no leaking apart from very occasional minor leakage for a second or two when I moved in certain ways. My bleeding carried on for 5 weeks despite being told it would last up to 5 days! It wasn't serious and was made worse by doing pelvic floor exercises so I reduced these. I had a small number of small blood clots as expected. When my sex life re-started after 4-5 weeks everything was fine apart from the expected retrograde ejaculation but as my ejaculate had been small before the op it made little difference. If I don't clear my bladder before sex I sometimes get a small urine spray at ejaculation. My surgeon had never heard of this (!) but Googling it shows it as a known feature. My 3 month check-up showed everything at 100% and no cancer in the prostate contents removed. Urine flow off the graph. no retention, normal sex, no pain or discomfort whatsoever and the occasional leakage was fading. Now 18 months later everything remains fine and a virtually zero PSA. A super urine flow except when rising in the morning when the bladder has been extended during the night and the flow is a bit slower. I usually get up only once during the night. Any urine leakage had now effectively disappeared and there never was any dribbling. In summary I didn't expect this level of success which I'm sure is partly due to a superb and experienced surgeon

Darnn! I don't know why I didn't get any alert of your post! By now your surgery is done. I'm a HUGE fan of Dr. Das. He is amazing. Do you live in Philly or did you travel in? If local, I'll be happy to talk with you on the phone. I had my HOLEP in December 2013

The one thing I CAN highly recommend - if Dr. D didn't already suggest - is to make an appt with Darlene who teaches the biofeedback for Kegels. Yes, yiu can watch a video but it's best to have the biofeedback machine SHOW you if you are doing it right. It takes two sessions with her and it is covered fully by Medicare.

I had my HOLEP done by Dr. Mitchell Humphreys at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. Phenomenal doctor, phenomenal postop care, I am well along toward a full recovery. Even at this point, six days out from the surgery, I have no visible bleeding, little discomfort, and I'm losing more than one or 2 mL of urine a day. I am thrilled that the experience was so easy. If you were on the fence, go ahead and do this. You will never look back. I am an anesthesiologist, thus absolutely aware of the numerous complications of TURP. This seems to be a marked improvement
