I too have developed a similar condition over the past year, which has over the last few months seems to have got worse. Initially I had flaking skin on just the thumb, 2nd and middle fingers on both hands. Whilst the condition has predominately remained on the thumbs and 2 fingers of each hand I do get slight changes to my remaining fingers from time to time. In recent months the condition has got noticeably worse with the fingers  tending to cycle with the skin appearing to become redder in colour, followed by numbness in the affected fingers and thumbs. Then I start to get splitting on the finger tips, making it very difficult to do basic chores such as writing with a pen or doing buttons up etc. Then the skins just dies and starts to flake off, but again still remaining very sensitive before eventually improving and then the whole cycle starts again. This latest cycle has been the worst to date, being very painful and the splits taking a long time to heal, making it very painful to do carryout basic tasks and have had to use my small fingers for typing on keyboards. I'll tend to have at least 1 or 2 elasterplasts on each hand, each day, simply because the skin is too tender and the dry peeling skin now appears to be spreading down my affected fingers making them look dreadful. To date I've been perscribed two different Steroid creams neither of which have worked and regularly moisturise the hands throughout the day with Dermol cream, which at least makes the fingers look normal for a period of time until they dry out again. I've also had allergy testing which again didn't show up any issues. I'm returning to the Dermatolagist in a couple of weeks where I believe they want to try UV treatment on my hands nextbut I'm not hopeful of a cure after reading through the comments on this and other websites. Its certainly blighted my life since it started and for someone who likes to do a lot of practical DIY work etc has meant that it has had a major impact on my life - can only hope it will cure itself and go !!

the numbness could be neuropath I have it on my middle fingers on both hands I take medication for it it doesn't really help but it can come for 2 or 3 months and leave but if it is neuropathy it generally will hit your feet or your legs or your arms at any time but sometimes it goes for a couple months

I had this as well. After numerous trips to the worthless dermatologist of now avail. I broke down and asked my mother who is just a mother and she said try Zinc Oxide a over the counter medication cream. Use 3 times a day and cover with a bandaid. Well I am on my 3rd week now and it is almost completely healed. No one knows what it is. Not a fungus, nor anything living. Dermatologist said psoriasis. Not, everything he gave me made it worse. Sounds crazy but the Zinc Oxide is clearing it up slowly but it is healing. No more painful cracks and ugly peeling.

I started getting the same thing (dry cracking skin on my thumb and index finder) a few years ago ( I am 54). It starts out as a tingling sensation in my fingertips before the skin starts to crack. My Dermatologist called it contact eczema and gave me a steroid ointment to use, which seems to help. I just wish I new what caused it as it is periodic.

I have also had this for about 20 years now, it started on the inside of my index finger on the thumb side and at first i thought it was a callous. Now ive got it on my thumbs, index fingers and one middle finger. My finger tips go numb, then the skin goes hard and there is no feeling in them so i cant pick up small things like paper clips at work. Then the skin peels off all the way down to my first knuckke. It is very embarrassing as it looks like i have a disease. Nothing i do stops it. I handle a lot of paper at work so maybe its related to that. I would love to know of a cure please

It seems to be something with the medial nerve since those are the fingers associated with the peeling. Numbness might be due to diabetes, so check for that. I had numbness for quite a while. Come to find out, I'm pre-diabetic and finger numbness is one thing that could happen I have sugars in control and the numbness went away, but I do every so often get the flaky, very dry skin and nothing helps it. Almost as if the sweat glands aren't functioning! Do I have nerve damage? Is some neurotransmitter not working properly?? Wish I could find something/anything to figure out why it's only on the few fingers that coincides with the medial nerve. I don't think it's carpal tunnel since my wrist is not in pain at all. It just seems like it has to do with the medial nerve somehow.

Could be hand foot and mouth if it ends after a few weeks

I have found great success with autoimmune disorders being resolved thru use of infrared sauna visits. A half dozen visits or so has taken care of a lot of my skin disorder issues, including the one you describe. I also used a product from a Cracker Barrel restaurant, called JR Watkins Apothecary it was a ointment for minor skin irritations burns, cuts, rashes. Has phenol as an analgesic and spruce oil. Smells tolerable in small amounts and it works well for a lot of skin problems.

Mine was a two pronged attack, well worth the try. The acupuncturist I visit for the infrared sauna said my immune system is overtaxed thus the skin disorders such as the psoriasis I had briefly last year that I had never had before. That cropped up after back surgery and being on a lot of meds for a four days stay in the hospital and then pain meds for a three months.

I'm a big believer in the infrared sauna. You can build a small one easily at home. Professional grade ones bought offline run from 2-5 grand. You can put one together for less than two hundred. The lights can be bought at any big box hardware store.

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and experience the same things, the numbness, tingling and pain are definitely carpel tunnel from compressed nerves, thank your baby it will get worse before it gets better, and then my hands just started peeling... I'm glad I'm not alone

Hi all sounds like contact dermatitis the numbness comes from the skin toughening and drying out trying to heal the underneath skin then it has no use and cracks and peels of there are no nerve endings in dead layers of skin so you can't feel properly till it falls off

My finger tips and palms get very hard and peel. Painful & ugly. I was prescribed a spray called Topicort. Use twice a day, once during the morning and then again once at night. Completely clears up my skin in two weeks.. Flexible and smooth. Only problem is the cure is temporary. Within the next 3 weeks all the whole symptoms come back and I have to use the Topicort again. This stuff works for me. I hope this is helpful because I completely understand what you are going through.
