Hi ladies,
I just wanted to say that my wife has recently had this problem as well over her last 2 periods. We recently had a baby girl in December but I just wanted to throw any ideas out there on the table. Maybe with heavy periods like my wife has had, the blood loss during periods could be lowering the amount of red blood cells and therefore increasing risk of infection? Infection that would normally be fought off by a healthy red blood cell count? By no means am I a doctor, I'm just the friendly neighborhood mechanic, but it's just an idea that I thought of. Maybe you can start to increase your iron intake a few days ahead of your period with spinach, iron pills, etc. It might help, but it might not, just an idea to help any ladies out there who are suffering like my wife is. We are increasing her iron intake and we're going to see how it goes. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS ANYBODY ELSE OUT! This just might help out.
I have this exact same issue, I get Depo shots to stop from getting my period which is amazingly helpful. The problem is that I stopped taking Depo for a couple of years to see how things would go and the symptoms all came back. Now I am back on it but I still have the issues when I have spotting, I don't get a full out period anymore because of the shot but every time I start spotting I get a migraine, body aches and pains, exhaustion, nausea, abdominal tenderness, swelling and bloating, sore throat, sinus congestion, dizziness. I would love to be able to resolve this issue once and for all, it interferes with my work, my kids, everything. I am happy to see though that i am not the only one experiencing this.
Having so many people in the same boat as me is kind of comforting. I usually get flu-like symptoms the first &/ second day of my period. It's so severe that sometimes I won't be able to sleep the whole night. I get extremely hot, sometimes dizzy and sweaty, and I sit on the toilet for 1-2 hours having very loose stool (sorry if tmi), almost diarreah. Then eventually the stomach pain will start to fade and I'll get chills and sometimes achey. The pain is so severe I have cried. Never puked but often feel like I'm going to. I have even had to have my brother bring me aspirin and water from the bathroom counter, 3 feet away, while I'm sitting on the toilet because I'm in too much pain to get it. And aspirin doesn't always help!! I'm sick of feeling this way once a month and I want real answers :((((
I was having fatigue and my arms and legs were numb and sore. I was lethargic and only wanted to lay in bed. No fever but I didnt feel very good at all. I had a severe vitamin d deficiency. Because I have PCOS and insulin resistance and take metformin I must also take a b-complex tablet everyday to help with the absorbtion of the metformin. I take a d suppliment and I take a probiotic and multivitamin as well. I plan to start taking calcium soon also. I hope this helps someone. My daughter is 22 mos old and I am 43 years old. I guess she tapped me out taking what she needed. Everyone was diagnosing me with arthritis, but I had more of a stiff achy pain than a joint pain. Im so glad to know what was wrong with me. You guys have no idea. Hope this helps someone.
You might be on to something here. I thought it was a coincidence I have been getting a cold the last 5 months or so at the same time I got my heavy period. I exercise, eat right, etc. but my GP found in my annual check-up that I was Vitamin D deficient and just started taking supplements.
I would love to know what dx said. It is 4 am here and I work at a library, love my job, but can't sleep due to the awful way I feel. I've determined it happens every other cycle. I had a blood test last time I felt this way and they didn't find anything except slightly low iron. I am 38 and mom of 3 so I can relate.
A health person i read on the internet says: "One word: prostaglandins. Pesky prostaglandins are released even before your period starts to do the work of dislodging the uterine lining from the wall of the uterus so you can have period flow. If they only worked locally on the uterus, you would just have some cramps, but these actors find their way into the blood stream and to nearby structures like the intestines -- and can wreck havoc! Prostaglandins can cause intestinal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, a feeling of being flushed, and general achiness. In short, they are no fun! To combat them, taking ibuprofen three times a day for the few days prior to your period can block the effects of prostaglandins and stop the side effects in their tracks. You’ll still get your period as expected but will have many fewer cramps and other unpleasant flu-like side effects."
I was having problems with my rectum aching during my period and my gyno said that prostagladins are to blame. Ibuprofen pills certainly can help but they don't sit well with me.
I have lyme disease and I get all of the symptoms you have described all month long but its worse around my period. Look into lyme disease!
I have severe flu symptoms 1 week before getting my period. It's been going on for 8 months now. I had a blood test and apparently I have glandular fever. Every time it's that time of the month the extra fluid retention seems to affect all my glands. Panadol, anti inflammatory, a good multivitamin and Omega 3,6 & 9 seem to help but have not fixed it.
Has anyone else been tested for Glandular Fever?
I'm glad I found this post. I'm 46, a runner and stay healthy and strong. For 2-3 days coinciding with my period, I feel like I have the flu. It started a few years ago. At first I thought I was just over-exaggerating my feelings. I'm achy, so weak, cold then hot. I spent much of this past weekend on the couch. I run a small business and hardly ever get time off to have fun, so it really sucks to spend my one weekend off recouperating from my period! My lab work a few months ago came back great except trace blood in my urine. Urologist ran me through the ringer with tests. No problems - I have a cyst on my ovary and endometriosis. I've had the latter for 20+ years. I've been off the pill for 10+ years. I don't have any answers, just venting. Trying to find something I can do to change this pattern. It's getting so that I have to anticipate and work my life around this thing every month, which isn't easy...
