Oh my gosh I am soo happy I found this. I woke up this morning with this same feeling and I couldnt describe it to my boyfriend. The closest thing I could think of was an eye twitch or when your pregnant and the baby has hick ups. My though is followed with sharp pains. Not bent over hurt but very uncomfortable pains and yes the twitching is extrememly annoying!!. I was about to go to the ER I am glad I looked online first!!

I have the same thing too but the doc has no idea what it is. since you have pain though you should get it checked out, and please let us know what your doc says!

FYI - have same random fluttering under left rib cage.  Also somtimes twitches in other random parts of my body.  Recently wore a 2 week 'event'.  Figures i didn't have many 'event's' during that time, but still everything came back  normal.  Still don't know what it is, but appears is not my heart.  I DO have minor mitral valve reguritation and moderate tricuspad regurg - but my dr swears i cant' be feeling that and it's nothing to worry about (i'm 42).  So....going to try to stop worring but if anyone gets different responses...please post for all of us.  Thanks!

I've read about the mitral valve and if you have regurgitation you probably have mitral valve prolapse which causes a lot of weird symptoms in your chest. its normally not dangerous if you don't get palpitations or arrythmias, which you don't since your event didn't show anything. definitely worth it to get a ekg or ultrasound for everyone else to see if it is your mitral valve or something more serious.

I am having the same issue and about the same location(left side slightly under rib cage, seems to be muscular level). My issue, also, is somewhat painful. It's like a sharp constant pain when it's "fluttering" or "pulsating".  Yes, very annoying and irritating. I feel like I don't want to move so that I don't get these "spasms." However, I do notice it more when I am laying on my back just as right now. I used to exercise almost everyday doing cardio and weight training, but I have been extremely busy and haven't had much time to exercise until recently. I am walking again in my neighborhood to get "fit" again. I am a 29 year old female who I would consider healthy. Just reading everyone's comment, I think stress may contribute to this. I have been under pressure with my school work, job, life, etc.  Recently, I'm noticing that I have more anxiety and stress relating issues. I hope this is the case, so I can de-stress and continue walking and doing other exercise activities such as tennis and muscle toning. Thanks you all. Please let me know if you have other comments.

HI All,

I have been having the same sensation of "Fluttering or missing heart beat" to the left side of my chest.  A few years ago my Dr. put a heart monitor on me to see whether it was my heart but everything was fine.  Since then it comes and goes but it is very annoying to say the least.  I have also found out from other internet sites that if the body is lacking magnesium you could experience panic attacks or irregular heart beats.  Apparently once the magesium is taken the fluttering is gone.  I however have not tried it only because I would like to discuss it with my Dr. before taking it.  I would also recommend that you do the same thing if you decide to try the magnesium.  I have also heard that the fluttering is due to stress.  I would like to reiterate that it is important to discuss the magnesium with your Dr. before taking it.

I'm experiencing the same thing, very relieved to see that I am not alone. I'm a 25yo male and started experiencing this sensation after I began doing core exercises. I'm thinking that it's just a muscle related issue, since there's no pain involved and the feeling is limited to the top layer of my abdomen. When I apply pressure to the area, there's no pain as I expect there would be if its an internal organ that's causing the trouble. I can't believe nobody can figure this out. I've found tons of similar posts, people have gone for x-rays and scans and tests but nothing is found.

I suffered from the twitching on my right side, just under the ribs off and on for several months.  Then I got painful spasms big time on my left side, again, just under the ribs.  At the time, I was doing a lot of sit ups and hanging crunches.  I was so afraid of kicking it off again that I stopped doing the exercises and I haven't had the sensation since.  In my case it was definitely caused by over stressing a muscle group and I would think that anyone who has been engaged in core exercises may have done similar.

To the person that has the problem with the itching sensation  under the lungs, my son gets that and so do I. It is really bad at times when I am sick, I have told the doctors about it and the were never alarmed, so if I were you I wouldn't worry myself over it. Go to the doctor when you can to ease your mind. Good luck

Thanks guys if its mucular its a huge relief.

I have been experiencing the same weird fluttering just under my left diaphragm. It certainly doesn't hurt and it never happens when I go to bed. It feels strange and I thought it might be my heart but it turns out my heart is in good shape. I am a runner and I have never had this before.

Hi I dont know whether this is the same as yours. I have felt a fluttering sensation under left rib cage for a few days now. I can only say it feelslike when your having a baby and the baby moves. I am 61 so no pregnancy..Last night I actually felt the movement. I went to my Dr who examined me. She told me that it was the bowel going into spasm under my rib cage. I do suffer from irritable bowel Doesis sound similar

Hi, it sounds like it's not what I experienced over a year ago when I posted as I was not pregnant nor have ever been. I remember it would "palpitate" and I noticed it more when I lay down for the night. I am wanting to relate it to my heart and muscle over the area due to high stress; though I didn't go check it out. I don't suffer from IBS. After posting this over a year ago, I haven't had any sensations. Good luck.

Hi, I'm 19 and have been experiencing this under my right rib. It started with fluttering first but now several times an hour I have a tightening sensation. Is it just stress then? Thanks..

The tightening of the muscle is just that, a muscle spasm. I got mine through doing an excessive amount of sit ups and crunches and I ended up having the worst weekend of my life. I find now that if I take Ibuprofen for a couple of weeks, I get a similar fluttering in the centre under my ribs. There is a muscle relaxant whose commercial name is Merebrevine. It works almost immediately but I think it's only available on prescription.

I have fluttering/twitching as well. It's happening on my left side, near the very bottom rib. I can just be sitting there, and out of nowhere I will start twitching near the very bottom rib. I don't know if it's a muscle or my stomach or what, but what I do know is that if I press between the very bottom rib and the one above it with my fingers, I can definitely feel the twitching with my fingers! I just want to know what might be causing this.
