Hello! My sister has been recently diagnosed diabetes. I thought that diabetes is a genetic disease and I was very surprised when I heard her diagnose since no one in our family was diabetic. The only symptom she had was frequent urination. My mother thought she had some kind of urinary tract infection but when we took her to the doctor her blood sugar results were increased. Is frequent urination sign of diabetes?
Hi! Yes, frequent urination is a sign of diabetes. The body tries to get rid of the extra sugar in the blood by excreting it in the urine. There are also some other symptoms such as thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, irritability, blurry vision and increased fatigue. Diabetes could often go undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem harmless. Frequent urination could be also a sign of many other diseases, but since your doctor already tested her blood sugar and according the results diagnosed diabetes than that’s it. Predisposition for diabetes can be inherited but it doesn’t necessarily mean that a person will get diabetes. Sometimes diabetes is triggered by an illness such as a virus or injury, especially at children.
