I had the same problem, and found out it was an esophageal stricture. I eventually had to have emergency surgery, but it's 100% better. Definitely try to see a GI.

26 yr old male. Experiencing frequent heartburn and occasional vomiting from food feeling stuck in throat/unable to swallow several times a month. Found out my family has a history of hiatal hernias. Sure enough that is what I have. I've changed my diet to exclude acidic foods, slowed down my eating pace, and am exercising more. It's helped a ton but still experiencing some acid reflux/heartburn symptoms. I'm going to start regularly taking OTC acid reducing agent to see how that helps. Stress also triggers my symptoms. If problems continue I may get a endoscopy to pursue more invasive treatments but I personally believe a lot of the symptoms can be managed with diet, exercising, stress levels, portion size, etc. My diagnosis might not be the same as you but I was surprised to not see any mention of Hiatal Hernia anywhere on this thread. LOOK IT UP!

Haven't had this happen in several months. But tonight, it happened. I get hiccups during dinner then it seems like if I eat even one more 1/2 teaspoon of food, it's all over. I end up rushing to the bathroom to vomit. Afterwards, I feel Wonderful, but am in no mood to eat anything else for the night. I am absolutely NOT bulimic (what a laugh). I recall my husband's Uncle having the same problem but I never knew if anyone figured it out or treated it in any way. (He passed away in his early 90's, so obviously, this wasn't a major health issue, just a major nuisance.)

Just wanted to chime in here after searching some other sites. The sensation I've felt (24 year old male, if it matters) is that there is a blockage in the throat. My first instict is to wash the caught food down with water and that just complicates matters. Generally, the water (especially cold water) will trigger a regurgitation. I've had to rush out of lunches with friends, dinners with families to find a spot to release the food. Usually, if I can get past the first wave, the rest of the meal is no issue.

It happens especially with meats, specifically chicken wings and steak. My mother also had the same symptoms when she was younger and told me if I lift my arms over my head when I first feel the sensation, it can help the food travel down. I recommend it. It's not a foolproof remedy, but it carries about a 65% success rate with me.

For longterm solutions, I'm looking into surgical options this coming year. I think the bottom line is the same for us youngin's looking to resolve the problem once and for all: visit an Ear Nose Throat specialist and ask about it. Don't settle for a doctor telling you it's acid reflux. Hyadol hernia (sp?) is closer to the diagnosis.

Sometimes my food won't go down. I have to be very careful to chew my food well and swallow every bite with water. If my food gets stuck, I have to spit it out. A lot of mucus comes up with it, then I'm fine for a few days. The only way I have been able to keep the food from getting stuck is to take a good expectorant for a couple of weeks every now and then.

Just tell your doctor that you took the Prilosec and that I didn't work. I shouldn't be his decision on whether you go to a specialist. Have you considered that it could be a food sensitivity?

I have a food sensitivity to gluten. I usually eat gluten-free, but when I do eat gluten, my throat starts hurting and it gets thick with mucus. You'll have to go to a naturopathic doctor to get help. The only thing the ENT would do was to give me Nexium. I am now eating gluten-free and try to eat all organic meat and vegetables. GMO foods are really messing up our health.

I agree. My wife is convinced it only happens when I dive into a meal too quickly at the end of a tense day. She insists I settle down for awhile, chew well and relax. Certain kinds of food definately need to be chewed more. Carbinated beverages compound the problem. Eat slower, chew well and drink water also with the meal.

I have the same problem but I am 5 months pregnant with twins. My doctor said it was either esophageal spasms or a hiatal hernia. I take two Zantacs at bedtime and it helps a bit. Sometimes acid in my throat wakes me up at night so there is some acid reflux, which is normal with a hernia.
