One of the doctors seemed pretty sure that it was the gallbladder and suggested following up with my regular doctor. He ordered upper GI series and ultrasound. The upper GI series showed everything looked perfect - no hiatal hernia, or anything else remarkable. The ultrasound showed something that appeared like a polyp inside the gallbladder, but nothing else. The doctor suspected GERD so suggested I try some Omeprazole 20 mg. It made no noticable difference and the debilitating pain continued all day and worse at night. He raised the dosage to 40 mg a day (I take it in the evening) and the level of pain really decreased but I remain very weak and somewhat nauseous all day. Just talking for more than a couple minutes or walking to the mailbox is cause for me to have to rest.
I recently had the HIDA scan done. (I made sure I had a preauthorization from my insurance company) After drinking the fatty drink they set me up on the scan again and 100% of the gallbladder was empty. I have a consultation with the surgeon tomorrow. I dread getting hungry and always wonder how awful I will feel after I eat. If I'm severely belching within a few minutes, I know I'll be be in more pain soon. I've lost close to 20 pounds in the last two months.
I have been mostly gluten free for 6 or 7 years, but know when I eat out that there might be small amounts of gluten in the food. When I quit started my gluten-free diet the daily pain I had decreased considerably and my constant severe constipation became manageable. I wonder how many gluten intolerant people suffer from this high ejection rate gallbladder issue. I just thought giving you some of my information might be helpful for your study.

I am a 58 yr old male, about 8 yrs ago I started having intermittent pain under my rt rib cage where the gb lives. I would hurt immediatley after eating classic symptom of gb problems. This went on for about 2 yrs I kept putting off having it checked. I work in radiology and know alot about how the gi tract works. i had seen enough nasty infeted gallbladders in surgery that I didnt want mine to turn BAD so I got an ultrasound done it was normal except for the gb wall was somewhat thickened. I kept on having pain after eating I went back to my Dr and asked to have a hida scan it showed thick wall and my ejection fraction was 92% I told my Dr to jerk my gb out and get this over with so I could start feeling better. He wanted to get another ultrasound and give it 3 more weeks, we got another ultrasound at 3 wks and still showed thick wall still have pain after eating. I insisted on having gb surgery, so on Friday the 13th LOL I got my gb out and now I feel normal again. You can have what appears to be a normal ultrasound and still have a non functioning gb or at least an over reacting gb my ejection fraction was considered high and with the thick wall warranted taking my gb out. I hope this helps anyone reading this.
