My daughter who was 15 had a high ejection fraction. She was sick for four months and unable to eat without pain and vomiting. Finally a surgeon agreed to remove her gallbladder. She was 100 percent better the next day after surgery. This was a nightmare but it has been a year and is completely healthy again. We thank God for that surgeon. I can't tell you how many specialists thought it was psychological because she was a teenage girl. Completely ridiculous.

I went to the emergency room at 4 a.m. 2 months ago with nausea, severe chest pain that radiated all the way from the upper abdomen to sternum to the back, swelling of the RUQ (about 6 inches diameter that I still have to date. This area was so painful that I couldn't wear my bra for the next two weeks.), feeling icy cold, and severely weak. They checked everything for my heart including several blood tests and a stress (treadmill) test. They said everything with the heart looked perfect. I saw 4 different doctors during those 12 hours. I looked up online to see what I needed to eat differently and the pain was not as severe, but I still hardly slept for the first 2 weeks afterwards or about 4 days after starting the 40mg Omeprazole (see next paragraph).
One of the doctors seemed pretty sure that it was the gallbladder and suggested following up with my regular doctor. He ordered upper GI series and ultrasound. The upper GI series showed everything looked perfect - no hiatal hernia, or anything else remarkable. The ultrasound showed something that appeared like a polyp inside the gallbladder, but nothing else. The doctor suspected GERD so suggested I try some Omeprazole 20 mg. It made no noticable difference and the debilitating pain continued all day and worse at night. He raised the dosage to 40 mg a day (I take it in the evening) and the level of pain really decreased but I remain very weak and somewhat nauseous all day. Just talking for more than a couple minutes or walking to the mailbox is cause for me to have to rest.
I recently had the HIDA scan done. (I made sure I had a preauthorization from my insurance company) After drinking the fatty drink they set me up on the scan again and 100% of the gallbladder was empty. I have a consultation with the surgeon tomorrow. I dread getting hungry and always wonder how awful I will feel after I eat. If I'm severely belching within a few minutes, I know I'll be be in more pain soon. I've lost close to 20 pounds in the last two months.
I have been mostly gluten free for 6 or 7 years, but know when I eat out that there might be small amounts of gluten in the food. When I quit started my gluten-free diet the daily pain I had decreased considerably and my constant severe constipation became manageable. I wonder how many gluten intolerant people suffer from this high ejection rate gallbladder issue. I just thought giving you some of my information might be helpful for your study.

This will work...take a teaspoon of pepto bismol in the morning and again at night for two weeks...your poop will be black... but that means this is clearing bacteria in your system...really works...

Thanks for suggesting this mechanism for the pain of a hyperdynamic or hyperkinetic gallbladder. My symptoms have been atypical--more suggestive of cardiac problems, since they're usually on the left side, under the breast, to the left of the sternum, and extending down the left arm, lately also across the diaphragm and a bit of discomfort in the typical gallbladder area. US and CT show lots of gallstones, and HIDA shows EF of 89%. Your explanation helps me understand why my "episodes" of gas-like pain, nothing acute, can last for eight or nine hours. I think hypersensitivity to CCK may be in the mix, too, since I get muscle trembling and contraction as well, and the CCK in my HIDA test had that result as well. I'm scheduled to have the gallbladder out this week, and it would be great to be rid of my "anxiety" symptoms as well as the discomfort!

Addition to above note: I had a full cardiac workup in the hospital and got the gallbladder testing only as a follow-up. Interesting that similar symptoms about seven or eight years ago, when I'd recently lost significant weight (a prime time for a gallbladder to go bad), also led to some cardiac testing.

I am a 58 yr old male, about 8 yrs ago I started having intermittent pain under my rt rib cage where the gb lives. I would hurt immediatley after eating classic symptom of gb problems. This went on for about 2 yrs I kept putting off having it checked. I work in radiology and know alot about how the gi tract works. i had seen enough nasty infeted gallbladders in surgery that I didnt want mine to turn BAD so I got an ultrasound done it was normal except for the gb wall was somewhat thickened. I kept on having pain after eating I went back to my Dr and asked to have a hida scan it showed thick wall and my ejection fraction was 92% I told my Dr to jerk my gb out and get this over with so I could start feeling better. He wanted to get another ultrasound and give it 3 more weeks, we got another ultrasound at 3 wks and still showed thick wall still have pain after eating. I insisted on having gb surgery, so on Friday the 13th LOL I got my gb out and now I feel normal again. You can have what appears to be a normal ultrasound and still have a non functioning gb or at least an over reacting gb my ejection fraction was considered high and with the thick wall warranted taking my gb out. I hope this helps anyone reading this.

Hi I have very similar symptoms as you. Basically the only symptom I have is nausea about an hour after I eat, not quite as bad as you but I have had nights where I feel as though I will throw up. This all seemed to start after what seemed like a normal 48hr bug. I have had all of the tests done and they have come back normal. I did have SIBO but have finished the two rounds of antibiotics for that with no resolve, I think that popped up from the countless weeks I spent on acid reducers since they initially thought this was acid reflux. PA of the GI doc I see said she thinks the next step the doc will want to take is speak with a surgeon about gallbladder removal. My PIPIDA scan came back gallbladder ejection fraction of 94%. I hope you have had your nausea resolved and I am very curious what you ended up doing? Thanks so much and I hope you get this message
