Can having your gallbladder removed cause more problems for Crohn's patients? If so, what are they?

Hello Hippocollector,

gallbladder removal brings some post-op side effects that you might mistake for Crohn's symptoms - mainly watery diarrhea. Also, some nausea and stomach upset do happen after gallbladder surgery, and after the procedure you first have to stick to the soft diet.

Post-op, you won't be able to tolerate high protein and foods with high fat content, but that goes even for people who don't have Crohn's. Generally, gallbladder removal should not cause you more problems, but I'd advise you to go through every option with your GI doctor very carefully. It might bring you relief if you've been suffering from gallbladder attacks, but it also might increase frequency of diarrhea and nausea,

Wish you all the best,

Nicole

Thank you Nicole! I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 2010 and for the most part, intestinally, I've been okay, but it's affected my joints and now possibly my gallbladder. I pass stones every year and end up in the ER for the excruciating pain, then my Urologist goes in and takes them because my ureter is so bent that there is no way they will pass. I saw a surgeon last Tuesday and she's pretty sure it's my gallbladder and I had a HIDA scan done so I am hoping it will find something. If it's normal, then my next step is to have an Endoscopy to see if it's an ulcer.
I am very apprehensive about having my gallbladder removed just from what I've read and I am in a support group on Facebook and of course, you hear everyone's horror stories so that makes me wonder if I should just put up with the pain.

Thanks again!
Jen
