Hoping I'm posting correctly....But I was on antibiotics dec 26-Jan 5 for a UTI. i had unprotected sex on dec 30, 31, and Jan 1. My period was set to come on Jan 6, which it did, and lasted about 3 days. I'm on birth control but I know with antibiotics sometimes it cancels it out. I also missed a pill the week prior to being on antibiotics and had breakthrough bleeding leading up to having unprotected sex. Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

It is likely that 30 Dec to 1 Jan were not fertile days if you had a normal 'period'. But taking a test now would be too early.

So missing a pill the week prior wouldn't have messed up my cycle/ovulation or have made it happen later, thus causing me to be more fertile on those later days in the cycle? When do you suggest I test? And are the antibiotics an issue? Do they really cancel out the birth control?

I also keep getting hot flashes, and keep having some abdominal discomfort. I feel like I'm about to get my period, but I know I'm not.

Missing only one pill would not affect your protection if the contraception is established. Also, you do not normally need to use additional contraception if you're taking antibiotics, unless the antibiotics (or the illness being treated) cause diarrhoea or vomiting. Then absorption of the contraceptive pill may be affected. The exception would be if you are taking rifampicin-type antibiotics for a while.
For there to be any chance of becoming pregnant you would have had to have ovulated at least a week later than expected, but as sperm can live in the vagina for up to six days, ovulating twelve days later than expected could lead to pregnancy. So I would leave three weeks after last sex (1st Jan + 21 = 22nd Jan) for a test to be conclusive. However, I think there is very little chance you could be pregnant (even taking the BC pill under normal circumstances there is a very slight chance).

Why were you on antibiotics, and what did you take?

Macrobid, for a UTI

I'm only concerned about pregnancy because I was on antibiotics. But if that doesn't affect it then I suppose I'm okay. I don't have any birth control at this time, I have my annual appt on Monday, at which time I'll get a new rx. Should I wait to begin a new pack of pills until after I test?

The drug Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is not an "enzyme inducer" which would reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. So in theory it should not reduce the pills effectiveness. However some doctors do suggest back-up BC (spermicide, condoms) as there seems little evidence about (better to be extra cautious). Often antibiotics cause diarrhoea or vomiting which could affect absorption.

Why do you not have any BC at this time? If you have stopped the regime (you didn't say what BC pills), you may have to 'start again' (discuss this with your medical practitioner), and you may not be adequately protected now. Have you had sex at all apart from the dates you gave? If you have stopped taking the pills and you have none now, then follow the instructions on the leaflet when you get you new rx, but also discuss that with your medical practitioner. There are different types of BC pills.

I have no refills on my bc pills, have to see my dr first. So I have nothing until I can see her on Monday. I was taking Junel Fe. And no I haven't had sex since the listed dates, my boyfriend and I are long distance and only see each other every other weekend usually. He will be coming this weekend, and is aware of the birth control issue so we will take extra precaution.

Also, I did have diarrhea for a day while on the antibiotics, but it was a day or 2 after the last unprotected sex, and a few days before I got my period.

You must ensure you have enough pills to take them continuously. Having had a break, you will probably be advised to start the new pack on a Sunday (check with your doctor, pharmacist, and read the instructions), and should use additional protection for 7 days.

The chances are that you were still protected. But tell your doctor when you go for your rx on Monday, and maybe she will do a blood test.

Hi there, I am very worried. I had unprotected sex on the 23rd day of my cycle - Friday the 13th of January which was a week before my period is due. I took emergency contraception 7 hours after the incident. I am also on birth control but I missed one pill at the beginning of the packet. I have been experiencing tender/sore breasts and mild cramping which could be side effects of emergency contraception or symptoms of pregnancy. What are the chances that I am pregnant?
