I'm 31, female, and have had heart fluttering for about ten years now. I have made two trips to the ER, like others I read about here. I have been told by many doctors and specialists that this is normal. I JUST DON'T BELIEVE THEM! If it was normal, then everybody would have the fluttering. My close friends worry about me all the time. I have taken stress tests and they've come out fine. I am about 50 pounds over-weight, and am always scared that is a factor. I have had numerous physicals, and despite the weight issue, doctor after doctor tell me I am in perfect health.
When I was 22 I was drugged at a bar with GHB. I know people have died from this, I am wondering if this had something to do with it? Do I have heart damage?
I agree, caffine is totally out of my diet now. I am seeking out heart healthy foods like BLUEBERRIES, AVOCADOS, RED WINE, AND SALMON. If anybody has any additional information for me, please contact me
Thanks!

Yes I have had this same experience with the heart pounding and the cough. It has been happening for years. When my heart pounds and speeds I can't breath and I must cough so I can breath.

i am 24 yo female. i have been experiencing palpitations recently. i have had them in the past, but only like once a week or so. this past thursday, at my mother's house, i had sort of an attack. for about 30 seconds, all i had were palpitations, no normal beats. it took my breath away, and made me feel very weak. pretty much scared the c**p out of me. then the rest of the night didn't have any. friday night, at a friends house, had another attack, but was simply flutters about every 5 min. of course, after drinking a couple beers and an hour later, they were gone. saturday, same thing. then sunday came around, and i was having the flutters ALL DAY LONG. they were happening about every 2 min. monday, same. now today, i've been having flutters about every 10 beats, for about an hour, then i wont notice anything for about another hour, then the next hour, flutters again. it's really bothering me, and i can't seem to keep my mind off it. i'm planning my wedding right now for 7/7/07, and i'm pretty sure that has something to do with it. i've been trying to drink water more often (not a big water drinker) and i haven't had any soda for 2 days (which is a big deal for me). the flutters are pretty much exactly what everyone else has explained. feels like my heart is thumping up into my throat, and knocks the wind out of me. makes me cough. but it seems the coughing does not make it go away for me. i can't figure out what will make it go away yet. should i see a doctor? or try taking some vitamins?

Guys!!!
The only way to prevent this fluttering is to eat vitamin and minerals rich food .I have also figured out that this will help you alot and continue taking them every day when u feel weak as you know that daily a lot of minerals flushed out from urine like ptassium(repolarozation and sodium for repolarization of heart to beat in a normal way and calcium is also helpful for the heart to beat properly so deifecincy in these minerals may cuase abnormal heart beats and if wwe dont replenish the body needs heart and nervous problems arrive....so take mineral and vitamin containing foods for healthy heart and healthy living......
quote="Ryanh"]I'm a 26yr old male, healthy, 160lbs, I have had this issue on and off since I was 17, I was told in the past it was stress causing this.
Only happens when I am at a resting heartbeat, 72bpm or so, I get a sudden fluttering feeling from my heart and it also feels pounding, I can feel it if I touch my chest. It also causes an instant shortness of breath and a weird uncomfortable feeling in my upper airway, that feeling like you have to cough, so if I cough this whole episode stops and goes back to normal, but if I resist the urge to cough it will keep going.
Today is the first day in a long time since it has happened and just this morning it has happened about 4 times and still I have this feeling in my chest like the urge to cough.
I have not been stressed out recently, I get a good amount of exercise weekly as well as sleep. I'm concerned about this, but I know if I go to my doctor she will say its nothing since I cannot recreate what is happening in the doctors office.
Anyone have experience with this?

well i am amazed at how many people have the same things happening at the same time as i am. I started of only having flutters and cough about once or twice a month or longer now i am having these attacks around every day for 2 to 3 weeks at a time when i cough i even get a pain in my hea because i have been coughing so much, i will be trying vit and mins to see if i can control this.
It's so interesting to read all of this. I too suffer from these annoying flutters. It is so bothersome. I find after a stressful day they come on as soon as I sit down to rest. Then when they start, I start to get worried and it snowballs. Also, does anyone feel like the center of there chest flutters, like little tiny bubbles popping? And sometimes I feel that choking sensation in my throat, like something is stuck. I suffer from Panic disorder and I am currently seeing my cardiologist who feels it's a combination of stress and hormones and is totally not concerned at all.
Good luck to everyone! :-D

Hi,
I found this topic through a google search of my symptoms and after reading the comments i feel a little better and just want others to know they are not alone. I'm 31 male, I have been having palpitations for about 4 years now. I began having panic attacks about 2 and a half years ago. I really haven't had a full blown panic attack in almost 2 years but I still get symptoms all the time. My symptoms have included palpitations, pounding heart, chest pain, tightness in chest, random pains throughout my body, and probably all the anxiety/ panic symptoms you could have. I still see my doctor regularly but haven't had an ekg in almost 2 years, I had several in a month at the onset of my problems. After all tests came back negative, I eventually just started living with the symptoms as doctors told me there was nothing wrong with my heart. Just recently I started having a cough that I actually feel is stress related, and I also feel an almost constant shortness of breath feeling. I am worried about this now and feel like I'm about to start falling apart again. I actualy saw my doctor about a month ago when these new symptoms started happening. I told him I feel a shortness of breath and coughing. He attributed it to allergies and did not seem concerned. So he gave me something for my nose and sent me home. Hope this helps others with similar problems.

Get your thyroid checked. Hyperthyroidism causes flutters big time.
I'm an 18 yr old female and I've also had problems with my heart like the first man said. My Dr also told me it was stress related or just in my head. My heart isn't like most peoples. It beats slower. When i'm at rest you can barely find it at all. I have the same symptoms as the first guy but i never get the urge to cough and my symptoms happen both when i'm active or at rest. I don't have any pain but it's still very annoying. So far as I've read no one knows what it could be nor will drs say. So i guess we're just odd balls that no one listens to.
I know there are people out there like me who are researching trying to get to the bottom of whats going on when you feel these strange feelings. I have been getting them since my early twenties and I'm 35 now, heres what I learned, my understanding is that if you have one DONT FREAK OUT! what happens is that your body will send adrenaline to your heart and it will make it worst making your heart pump faster (fight or flight). I have flutters and palpitations and the best thing I can do for myself is take a shot of liquid B12 (1000 mcg'c) under the tongue for a count of 10 seconds, swallow, and breathe deep a few times slowly. Keep yourself busy too... dont think about the problem...unless ofcourse if you feel pains, fullness in the chest, fever, shortness of breath, fainting etc. < in that case call 911 NOW! I still fear the worst when I get them, deathly afraid of dying too young...blah, blah,blah...the fact is (as mentioed above is that 1000's of us have them and they are mostly harmless and normal. I have gotten EKG's and a few months ago I had bloodwork done, they found nothing, and I had one tonight after dinner....flutter,flutter.....anyhow To keep my story short...go to GNC and ask them for liquid B12, start by taking 1/2 a dropper under the tonge as I mentioned, take deep breath's and in 15 min's you will feel invincible! if 1/2 a dropper does not work take a full dropper, B12 is one of the most safest vitamin's in the world you can take it in larger quantities and not overdose or become toxic. If you like red wine get a nice French Bordeaux ( I go to Trader Joe's here in California and I always find great ones for under $6.00 a bottle ), have a glass a day (it's good for the heart)....and drink lot's of water, get at least 30 min's of cardio a day, have a 50 min. massage at the end of every month (I'm a massage therapist). E-mail me for further suggestions, I'm full of them...and we can all make eachother better by keeping in touch (pen pals?) and talk about things when they get difficult or scary.
Peace and good health.

OMEGA 3's (fish) , Potassium (Bananas), and weight control are also good ideas.
hmm, i'm 19, 5'11 160lbs in great shape, and have done sports all my life including soccer and cross country and track (lots of running) I have no problem exerting myself (I remember checking my pulse at practice once and it was up to 200 I obviously felt tired, but still completely normal and fine), i've been experiencing this for i dunno, at least 4 years now? it's always when i'm at resting heart rate, i get the fluttery feeling and my heart starts racing, and i feel short of breath. I've never once felt like coughing though. I always used to think that what it was, was that i somehow "forgot to breath" because it used to only happen when i was trying to sleep, i think it may have woken me up a few times, but i'm not sure. It never lasts more than 5-15 seconds, maybe a time or two a month at most, and the number of occurrences seems to very very slowly be increasing. I don't think i have any sort of panic disorder, i'm never anxious or nervous when it happens, it's always completely random. I'm really not sure what to do about it.
I'm 47 and had a few of these recently. They called it PVC. We also found that my potassium level was low and we are working to regulate that--as the one person commented. Hi and low potassium levels can effect this condition, as well as the stress and worry everyone else has mentioned.
hI,
I AM 56 WIT CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE AND I HAVE THE FLUTTERING HEART, COUGHING ETC.
mY DAUGHTER WORKS FOR A CARDIOLOGIST AND LOTS OF TEST HAVE BEEN RUN WITH NO RESULTS. mY DAUGHTER SAYS IT COULD POSSIBLE BE SPASMS OF THE MUSCLE BETWEEN MY DIAPHRAM AND HEART. mY HOLTER MONITOR IS FAIRLY NORMAL. ALL HEARTS SKIP, RACE AND HICCUP, BUT WHEN IT INTERFERES WITH YOUR LIFE SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. THEY CHOSE TO DO NOTHING.
