hi i would also like to add that i get heart fluttering and my heart stops so i have to breath and get tingling in my feet from it sometimes. I do not drink caffine and drink lots of water and have a healty diet.
I recently went to my Dr. for a physical and had a scare when he told me I needed to go see a cardiologist for a stress test. He said I was in good health, but was confused with an elevation in my heart when he gave me an EKG. I went to see a cardiologist for a stress test, but was told I needed to come back for a different test.
Now, before I went for my physical with my Dr I felt fine. Now after all this stress test and elevated heart talk I've been nervous, fluttering in my heart, shortness of breath. I have had problems with anxiety, but not in a long time. Now I fill it returning and it sucks. I'm sure I could just be working myself up from the scare of my Dr and cardiologist, but I felt fine before I went to my check up. It was a battle for me with anxiety, and I did a pretty good job with understanding and keeping it out of my life on my own. But I guess I'll hear the verdict on my visit back to the cardiologist on wed.
It just fills good to be able to relate this to people that understand.
Thank you,
STAN

Hi everyone,
I have been having symptoms as the original poster stated for about 7 or so years. Quick heart flutter w/ urge to cough that goes away upon coughing.....I have never not coughed when it has happened, so I don't know if the flutter would continue if I didn't cough. I went to the doctor, of course got an EKG that showed nothing. A few years later I went to another doctor, another EKG showed nothing....obviously....it only happens like once every few months.
The first doctor told me that it happens to lots of people, so maybe it's the sympathetic nerves firing a little faster than they should for a second or something like that. I'm in medical school now.....hopefully I can come up with a decent explanation as I move along.
Since it seems to happen to so many people, I'm hoping it's just something that happens to a lot of ppl as that first doctor said.

I get these heart palpitations also, and sometimes even feel the pulsing in my carotid arteries up to my head. I also have this uncontrollable urge to cough. The coughing helps but then it returns, sometimes for hours and always when I'm sitting down. Not when I'm exercising or moving around. It is very annoying. I saw a cardiologist. Had an echo, holter monitor and event monitor and each time did not catch the palpitations. As soon as I was done with the cardiologist with normal results they returned. I also get a light-headed feeling. I am an otherwise healthy 50 year old women who doesn't smoke, drink excessively or have any other symptoms. I am not overweight. I am menopausal. I also find these symptoms occur mostly after a meal, whether it be a light meal or regular meal. I also experience some belching with the palpitations.
I have no idea what it could be, but it is very worrisome and mostly annoying. I am most definitely not stressed when these symptoms occur. I am usually very relaxed and almost always sitting. Can anyone help me.

I am a very healthy 35 yr old male and started to have these flutters in my chest last Saturday - out of nowhere. They continued for the day, gradually getting more severe.
Yes, all day long. And each time I felt the urge to cough, just like the first post said.
It got to the point that I went to the hospital at 11:30PM and my BP was elevated, as was my resting HR which is normally in the high 60's. They asked about my caffeine intake (which is ONE cup of coffee a day, and no Coke or Red Bulls).
They hooked me up to an ECG and they picked up a bunch of episodes, so they did a blood test.
I was shocked when the doctor asked me if I had run a marathon in the last few days - I hadn't of course... my CK levels were through the roof! My thyroid showed slightly elevated levels and my potassium was a little under too.
Turns out that CK shows up in your blood when you've had severe muscle deterioration - like after running a marathon. I hadn't. But it wasn't a heart attack either - just huge CK levels. Normal range is under 80, mine showed as 1500.
They sent me home and told me to see my doctor soon. Nice.
I went to get more blood work done 2 days later at my family Dr, all the while dealing with these flutters and he told me to get a Holter Monitor.
Two days after that (Wednesday) I had a Holter Monitor put on and wore it for 48 hours - just took it off this morning and returned it. The whole time I was fluttering away like an id**t.
This entire week I have been having episodes of fluttering, coughing, and crapping my pants because I don't know what's happening (I would say at least 100 episodes each day or more).
Now I have to wait on more results and see what's next for me, but I'm sitting here (Friday night) still having these episodes. STILL.
Same with me, I get them most often when I am sitting down - and I can measure my HR as being high.
I will post again when I get my results to hopefully help others who have suffered from this - in the meantime I'm going to get some liquid B-12 and see what happens.
If anyone else has had them for more than a day or so, please post so we can share and be better informed.
Cheers,
ChakkaCam

I have a few of the same symptoms as others in this thread do. I noticed this for the first time today while walking home from work. My heart fluttered for a few seconds 4 times in a matter of 5 minutes. I didn't feel dizzy or weak. I didn't feel any pain but I did feel extremely short of breath. This was about 2 hours ago. I don't feel any better right now. The fluttering has long stopped but I feel a light pain in my chest and when I try for a deep breath, my chest hurts more.
I looked up the symptoms of a heart attack and noticed some matching how I feel. My shoulders have started hurting, I'm still short of breath and I'm insanely worn out. I have a headache and other minor body aches. I'm afraid to go to the hospital because I'm not certain it is a heart attack or the beginning of one and I don't want to end up in the ER, without insurance, only to find out it's nothing at all. I'm worried though, I don't feel well at all and I live alone, I'm afraid it could be something and I could collapse and no one would know. My other issue is, I'm 23 years old. How likely or probable is it for a 23 year old to suffer a heart attack? I do have a lot of stress in my daily life and in my personal life as well.
Does anyone have any idea of what this may be?

"I don"t smoke or it probably would be worse. I would say if you do smoke and have this problem, STOP."
Try being a smoke having this problem and having a cold it sucks

im now 22 and was first diagnosed at 13 with svt, palpatiating , racing heart , i call them flutter, now it has just come back last may, im on medication again, but still now have the little heart flutter takes my breath away and really gives me anxiety, i found it so wonderful as weird as it sounds to read on here that so many people have it because for a long time last year and now i feel so along and that no one has this or understands what i feel from my heart everyday, and i really do thank people for speaking out, its a little problem that can be very scary.
I'm a 42 yr old male, otherwise healthy. At the age of 14 I started having frequent irregular heart beat episodes, particularly when I layed down or had a cold or something. This has followed me all my life and has therefore afforded me much time to research and self diagnose and/or medicate. What I have found to be extremely effective as some other blogger touched on is Potassium. Potassium is in fact the mineral that regulates and/or aides the electical impulses that regulate how your heart beats. Various clinical studies have shown that most people do not injest the suggested 3500mg daily allowance. Once I come upon this I started eating high pottasium foods througthout the day, not just in one sitting and my irregular heatbeats have virtually disappeared. Try anything over 400mg per serving such as O.J., bananas, patatoes, etc.. my personal favorite - low sodium V-8, 1,180 mg per serving. It takes like one day to kick in then your set as long as you stay on top of it. Potassium can be dangerous but only if you have kidney problems or if you go crazy and overdose. About the panic attacks, out of the blue I started having panic attacks 3 years ago, I thought I was going crazy and more importantly I thought I was simply going to die. The heart racing, shortness of breath, cold sweets, feelings of doom and gloom. The very thought of a panic attack would bring one on with the syptoms getting worse with each episode, to where I couldn't go anywhere - it induced depression, it was very isolating. I called 911 on three occasions certain something was very wrong only to find out that I was perfically ok. I was back and fourth on the whole issue of medication on the fear that I would need to depend on it all my life. The breakthrough came when talking to a friend of mine who incidently told me about his sister and this "weird" thing that was happening to her, and low and behold it was identical to my attacks. Something snapped in my head and i suddenly realized this was not isolated to me. Come to find out millions of people have this happen to them and guess what, they don't die from it. Eventhough you may think your dying and all that, your not. This reality really empowered me to not give way to those feelings, to give them no mind, to fight for my sanity. and it has absolutely worked. I have not had a panic attack since 12/07. I live a normal life, go everwhere and can look at the whole experience objectively. Hope this helps - it changed my life
Well I'm glad to see this post here. I've had the same issue and it's true, in my case that, it usually occurs when I am under a lot of stress. I've experienced anxiety attacks before, but have learned to keep it under control without drugs. I've been to 3 heart specialists and all of them said that my heart is fine. I'm 43 years old, 150lbs, and exercise a lot, so I guess I'm in pretty good shape. The feeling I get is really annoying. It feels like my heart drops and then I'd feel the urge to cough, sort of like, jumps start it again. Anyway, since most of you experience the same thing, then I guess I have nothing to worry about. One thing for sure, we have to keep our stress level under control, or it will eventually kill us :-(
Thanks for all the posts and good luck to all. Be healthy and be happy.

Wow, I am amazed that so many people have this as well. I just experienced it again and thought I would do some research. THis started I believe in 2006 and was pretty infrequent. It seems to be happening a lot more lately. I can just be sitting there and I feel my heart jump and thump and race and then I have an overwhelming to desire to just cough and I do and then it resolves. I do feel pain in my shoulder sometimes a few minutes afterwards like now. I am an RN and this is scary as I can think of all sorts of things that could be wrong.
I wonder though if all of these symptoms are not related to GERD - acid reflux disease.
I was in the hospital Jan 1 2007, I knew I was having a heart attack, I had been experiencing chest pain, shoulder pain, nausea, I was so afraid. I was 40 at the time. Everything was normal, it was GERD. Something about the same nerve pathway so GERD symptoms feel like a heart attack.
My shoulder sure is hurting but I also know I have been having issues with the GERD, d/t stress, eating too late, eating too fast, and consumption of caffeine and I need to restart the Omeprazole.
Anyway, another angle to consider. GERD is so common these days.
Good luck.

As far as "panic attacks" are concerned, my cardiologist said it's a fight or flight response, as you can read more from the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight-or-flight_response
When I first experienced this, it was very scary. I didn't know what it was, but all the symptoms felt like a heart attack. I went to the ER that night and the ER doc said I was experiencing a panic attack. Subseqent thoughts about an episode would trigger another attack and so on. After 3 cardiologists later, and all of them had confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my heart , I've learned to deal with my panic attacks without any drugs. When you feel like an attack is coming on, just calm down. Cover your nose with your hands and breathe slowly. Try to concentrate and listen to your breathing, and try to keep it under control. Breathe in with your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth. The main thing you need to remember is that you are perfectly fine and all the panic feeling you're experiencing is all mental. If you can reassure yourself that there's nothing wrong with you, you will conquer your "panic attacks". I am not saying that it is easy, but if you can get more practices, you will get over it.
Fight or Flight ... I chose to FIGHT and so can you.

I had this prob with heart palpitations, shortness of breath and flutters after my first child, I then fell preg again 2 1/2 yrs later and they started getting worse, so I saw a cardiologist and they found I have a hole in my upper septum of my heart.
I am a 39 year old female. I just went to my doctor on Friday to get a physical and the ekg and everything came out normal. The only thing that came low was my thyroid. Today I have been feeling that my hearts pounds really fast if I walk like if I've been running. I have felt like this all day. I'm a little worry. I've also been in the emergency room various times because of palpitations. Every time I go to the ER they tell me is panic attack. I'm happy to know that other people feel what I feel and I'm not alone. Thanx for posting.
