I am a 16 year old female and I have been experiencing similar things. usually when I'm just laying around, when I least expect it my chest will start feeling like is bubbling or something? It's a hard feeling to explain.. But it's definitely scary. it's pretty positional so rather than coughing to get rid of the feeling I lay on my stomach and it actually stops feeling strange! I'm pretty sure I don't actually have heart problems bc I'm young, been a vegetarian my whole life, and no history of heart problems in my family. I've been to the doctor a couple of times for it and I've gotten many EKGs and blood tests. I even wore a heart monitor for a month!! (Boy was that a pain). But everything came back normal... I still feel them almost every day and I get pretty shooken up every time. Wish I knew how to stop it, but it helps my stress knowing that other people feel the same thing!

Hi all :-) I am 31 yr old female, and for the last 5 years I have been having almost exactly the same symptoms, only without the caughing part....major shortness of breath though...Its a real scary feeling of one or two flutters like chaotic beats taking my breath away completely...Im always scared that ..what if it happens once n it doesnt go back to normal? Had several test done, nothing ever showed up...the truth being that when I had them done I did feel completely fine. I also have a congenital hypertension...which I am taking medication for...:-( If anyone ever experienced anything like it, please ...share , I am pretty scared...

hello I'm a 43 year old female I have had heart problems for the last 15 years and by heart problems I mean the flattering when I least expect it is so intense and it takes all of the air out of my lungs and I cough like crazy and then I'll hold my breath and the fluttering is still happening to the point where it scares the c**p out of me!!!! I went to a doctor I were a heart monitor the where I had to push a button every time I felt a flutter they got the results back and it seems that I have a valve/flap problem... The flap in my heart is not acting properly...so thr blood is not circulating properly ?? Does that sound familiar to anyone? I do have heart disease in my family my mother has a skipping heartbeat and he did talk of surgery if I was ready or wanted to ...I haven't done anything and it's been 10 years.......I dont know what to do :(

hey everybody I am now with a physical therapist... dealing with my scoliosis ...but as I have written in the past I have this BAD OCCASSIONAL fluttering heartbeat... so badly that it takes my breath away and makes me cough... the physical therapist told me that it is a flap problem a flap that regulates blood flow and a lot of people have it and ...you can get surgery or you don't have to it's just a matter of what you want to do and it's really something that isn't major but it is a problem with just being annoying... and forgive me because the correct medical term I have forgotton.... but it is the same thing my the cardiologists told me ... back in the day... when I wore a heart monitor and he opted for surgery or no surgery...up to me... I have chose no surgery because It's open heart surgery so I think I can put up with what's happening...... I hope this helps anyone who has similar problems that I do..... I am so sorry that I have forgotten the medical term... I just know it was the same term that my cardiologists used.....best of luck to all....

Ryan, I am so happy to find your post. You explained the symptoms that I have exactly. The rapid heart rate doesn't do it unless I'm resting. I comfortably walk 3-4 miies a day with no problems, but if I lay down to take a nap in the afternoon it starts pounding and the coughing begins. If I resist the coughing I can't talk, and the pounding sometimes even gets more intense. I did go to the doctor and they put me instantly in the hospital over night for observations. $3,000 later they said there isn't anything wrong. But the pounding didn't happen in the hospital. They want me to go for a stress test, see a cardiologist, wear a montior...so much expense. A heart doc in the hospital said he never heard of anyone needing to cough when their heart raced, I thought i was the only one with this weird symptom. I do have high cholestrol and I am trying to get it down with diet and exercise. NOT interested in drugs if i can help it. Sometimes this happens all day everyday for weeks then it goes away for a month. When I take my pulse, I can count 10-20 beats then my heart stops for at least 2 beats and starts back up. Sometimes it doesn't have the irregular beat at all......it makes it hard to go to specialists because it's so expensive to walk in their door just to say it's all in my head. But I don't want to ignore something that could be serious. I also have a diagonal crease on both of my ear lobes and I have heard that is a sign of heart disease. I am a 57 year old woman and docs seem to ignore what women say. I just want to spend my money at a doc who will listen to me and my symptoms and properly diagnose the problem. My family doctor is wonderful for saying "lets TRY this drug". He gave me an RX for 800 mg Ibuprophen for leg pain I was having, this was AFTER I had been there for the heart thing. Well Ibuprophen taken daily increases your risk for heart attack by over 50%....did he even notice I had just been in the hospital for an unknown heart problem just 3 months earlier??? UGH. Anyway, thank you for your post, I feel better that it's not just me!

High I'm a 21 year old male and have never experienced this before until these last few months. Ive lost a lot of my loved ones and have been left with two businesses to run I'm stressed to the Max and always active. I smoke as well... but lately its interfering with my sleep and relaxation time. I don't get the urge to cough but the sudden loss of breath and inability to catch my breath to spite trying. Do you think that it will progress to a more serious issue since I cant see me getting a break anytime soon?

I have every symptom on here you all are describing. My heart would skip, race on its own and have minor chest pain with anxiety. I went to a cardiologist last year and after an echocardiogram found out I have mitral valve prolapse with slight regurgitation. You are born with it but usually symptoms don't show up til adulthood. Around 7 to 10% of the population has it. Doesnt seem like a lot but when you factor in how many people are on the planet we are talking millions. I can still run, bike etc but I get tired faster than most because of it. I eat 99% healthy. I never drink coffee or caffeine soda and I don't smoke. But it sucks having it as episodes come on by themselves and that in it turn causes anxiety and then anxiety causes heart palpitations on top of the ones I get from having MVP. Ughh. Takes weeks to go with no episodes. Im on my 3rd week of it today. Sometomes it goes away for months and comes back for weeks. Laying down makes me cough at times from it. I would suggest anyone that hasn't seen a doctor just have it checked. They check for a clicking noise and the echocardiogram will show your mitral valve prolapsing and not closing 100% if you have what I have. It's the most common benign heart disorder but 99% of people that have it don't need anything for it unless it is regurgitating a lot. My EKG was normal which is great and my lipid panel is just about normal. My Bp is 114 over 72 which is fantastic at my age of 40. Im 5'10 and 158lbs. Mpv is nothing serious from what I was told and also read about but the anxiety that some of you are having is what I am going through daily sometimes for weeks ;(. My fiancés 12 year old also has MVP so you are born with it and the symptoms sometimes show up in your teens, later in life and sometimes if you're lucky none at all. Good luck all. You are not alone. From Florida :)

I have recently been experiencing the exact same symptoms as you all describe, a shortness of breath relieved somewhat by coughing, a physical "fluttering" in my lower abdomen etc, usually some time after eating coincidentally!

I have just read a post on this website entitled "weird flutter in my stomach", and the suggestion of celiac or coeliac disease was like a eureka moment for me!!

This apparently affects and inflames the lining of the small intestine below the diaphragm and can be alleviated by going "gluten free"!!

Im not suggesting this is the case for everybody, but I read up on the symptoms (tiredness/lethargy, bloatedness/excessive wind, weight fluctuation up/down, diarrhoea/constipation/both, aneamia and sometimes "bone pain", and I can personally relate to some of these in one way or another!

I will be booking in with my doctor asap and requesting a test for coeliac/celiac disease, unfortunately this involves an endoscopy (thin tube down the throat) and them taking a biopsy to test, but it really sounds like it could bring years of discomfort and more recently, months of severe worry to a possible end..........and just by changing my diet!!!

I really do hope this works, and helps anyone who has posted on here as I never realised so many people are suffering with the same thing!

Best wishes and regards to you all!

Hi, I'm 17 and I have the same fluttering when I'm in the same state. But I don't feel the urge to cough. Mine speeds up and slows down when I breath, but it gives a little flutter and it feels like it takes my breath out of me. I'm fairly active as well. Just recently I was sitting down watching TV, as soon as I got up my heart started beating hard but not fast, then it just stopped beating for over 10 seconds and I almost passed out right when it started up again. I have gone to the doctors for blood work and heart scans, but the have never found anything. If you get any results plz let me know. It's kinda scary. I literally almost died.
