It's been 3 years, and it is the size of a 16 in softball. Dr. still won't operate! How did you convince your surgeon to operate???

Try Ultrasound. I bought an "Ultralieve" - a home ultrasound unit for other reasons but tried it on a tender lump that wouldn't go away after a bad bruise I had some 6 months ago. Immediate affect after only 1 application for me - but my issue doesn't sound as bad as others.

I have had the same issue. A plastic surgeon was the answer.

How did you know it was a hematoma? I have pain when I walk, sit and sleep. I need to know how you can find out if it is a hematoma please. Thank you. It's been 3 1/2 weeks!
Thank you.

Try taking Serrapeptase. It eats scar tissue and there are no known side effects so it's safe. Just an enzyme.

Some of the symptoms that you describe sound more like nerve problems. There is a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. More particularly Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Check into the symptoms of both and see if they match up to yours. I also have nerve problems and much of what you described is what I live with every day. Good Luck!

I fell down a flight of stairs 2 months after having spinal fusion at L4-5 & L5-S1 and instantly had a hematoma form on my left upper arm. About 1 year later my PCP sent me for an ultrasound and a CT scan. The results showed that there was a hematoma but there was no longer an active blood supply. So....this meant that my body "should" reabsorb it. That was 3 years ago and the lump is still there. About 2 weeks ago it started itching really bad. Normally I would think that is a sign of healing but I am really worried because this is 3 YEARS OLD!! I called my PCP and am waiting to see what she suggests. I have tried massage therapy, ultrasound therapy, and Hot/Cold Compress therapy with obviously none working (not even a little). Anyone else have anything like this happen? Any suggestions?

Oh my!!! These were NOT the answers that I was expecting!!! I saw my PCP today and he really has no idea why I still have 2 hematomas 5 months after a very severe car accident. His suggestion was after another month to ultrasound it to make sure it is indeed hematomas or calcifications. I KNOW they are hematomas. You can still see the discoloration on the one on my knee which hurts almost all the time. I cannot kneel, When I squat or bend down it exacerbates the pain. We have tried heat, ultrasonic therapy at physical therapy, massage.... the one on my knee is about the size of a softball. I have a hard time telling how big the one on my hip is. It only bothers me if I sit wrong, or bump it, basically aggrivate it. It is certainly pretty large just by palpating it and telling where the pain is. I actually have the indentaion of the buckle from the seatbelt and a deep ridge that you can feel externally. I bought almost the same car, so the seatbelt sits exactly in that place and if I shift in my seat and bump it, it gets my attention. I'm praying this is NOT surgical! I already face the possibility of a foot surgery for a tendon that was damaged, a cervical spinal fusion AND a lumbar/sacral fusion. I can't afford to be off work anymore!!!! Thanks for the resopnses! :(

hello. I sustained a really bad gluteal hematoma two years ago. I still have a lump in the upper quadrant. I have little tissue and a LOT of pain in mid to lower quadrant. The ER physicians were hacks and I have received no treatment since it occurred. Is there a way to help me?

Wow! Guess I'm lucky? I blacked out (freak thing), tumbled down a whole flight of stairs, got 10 stiches near my eye. Almost looks like permanent smiling eyes, so not bad. My whole leg looked like a huge Italian parma ham. That cleared up after two weeks. Now 1 year and and 9 months later, still have a hemotama on my upper left thigh that is about 1/2 an inch tall, 7 inches vertically long, and 4 inches horizontally wide. But not particularly hard at all, smooth mound like Ares Rock in the Outback, no discolor, and never any pain from the beginning. Except for the parma ham beginning. Doctor said it will go away. Looks like another two years for that. I'm busy, and never went back to see a doctor. Dumb? Very sorry for you all that have painful ones.

A surgeon deals with hematomas. I had one, 10 x 12, left over from a bad gallbladder surgery along with a bile leak. After vomiting every day all day, the surgeon finally removed it.
